Microsoft’s CES 2011 Windows Phone 7 demo showing cut and paste

Above is Microsoft’s 8 minute CES Windows Phone 7 demo, showing mostly familiar features, but in the video we do get to see Cut and Paste in action.

The presenter, Liz Sloan, is rather manic, so it might be wise to fast forward to the 6 minute mark for the feature in action.

I watched the on-demand version of the video and fast forwarded when this woman came up…
okay, seems like Microsoft screwed this. Why can´t we have "select all" as well as "cut" buttons?

We´re in the year 2011 Microsoft, this shows that there are still the wrong people behind this product. Seriously, copy&paste has been around for ages now and we all know that MS employees are carrying iPhones too (or rather have been). This is the biggest fail of WP7 history so far!

    • http://www.facebook.com/J88NYR Jonny Rose

Exagerating a bit are we? at most on a phone you select a web address, phone number thats about it…

      • http://www.martinschmidler.com martinschmidler

No, definitely not. This industry is fast and dynamic and there are lots of things a company can make wrong. But having version of something so basic as cut-copy-paste that does NOT stack up to the main competition (iOS and Android) is an indication that there might STILL be the wrong people working on MS mobile division.

Also, no I don´t only use it for URLs and phone numbers. I realized I use cut/copy/paste really heavily on my iPhone4 and I hoped Microsoft would bring some concepts from the Courier over to WP7 (wouldn´t have been that hard).

        • rsg

Stick to your iPhone 4 in that case, it's obviously doing everything so much better.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001395218690 Pantou Ekang

Rights.. MS MOBILE Programers are looser…!!!!

          • http://twitter.com/chmun77 @chmun77

I think is not about winning or lose. Is about the needs of the user instead. If Jonny prefers his iPhone 4 alot for copying lots of stuffs, just stick to his iPhone. But there are others who indeed do not need such copying of stuffs that much. Why not you say iPhone programmers are losers too because iPhone is not able to play Flash like Android too?

    • danny

It does seems like a surprisingly weak implementation. It does not fit with the rest of the aesthetic at all.

And wow! She is just unbearable. Someone told her to have high energy she went manic. There is not getting around that this year's ces is a fail for MS.

    • Keith

How long did it take Apple to get cut & paste in iOS?

    • koyce

I actually think its great because its easy to select all by sliding your finger cross a text and you can "cut" by highlighting text and hitting the "back" key on the keyboard. it makes it clean and simple that way

      • http://www.facebook.com/vbandi Velvárt András

Exactly. You can do Cut because the text remaing highlighted after copy, so you just press the backspace key. If they put a cut icon next to the copy one, that may get pressed too often, causing confusion.____Or maybe there is a tap and hold on the copy button, who knows… But I hope not, unless "Select all" is there.____This is actually a much faster way to select text then on iOS. On iOS, you have to tap and hold a word, choose Select from the popup menu and then you can move the handles. On WP7, she just taps on a word, and immediately moves one end of the selection to cover the entire line – so fast, I had to watch three times to see the gestures. Which is bad demoing, but that's another question.

    • mrtimsmith

You seem like one miserable whiny douchebag. Do you even use the phone or are you just another one of those loser virgins that likes to bash microsoft? Either way the sky is not falling so settle down with the overreaction.

      • http://www.martinschmidler.com martinschmidler

Wow, you are getting personal here my friend.

Yes I _am_ using WP7 for a week now and C&P is the no.1 thing missing for me. It's just a shame that a company as big as Microsoft can't do a proper implementation o a feature that has been around for DECADES. Lots of you think I'm a fanboy well actually I'm more of a MS fanboy than an Apple fanboy but it sms like you kids can't handle honest criticism (even when it's not targeted at you..)

        • koyce

If we truly want WP7 to succeed, Let's worry about MS not getting WP7 and services like Xbox live and marketplace to other countries on time and not whine about "cut" which can be done by highlighting text and hitting the back on the soft keyboard . I think this present implementation is cleaner.

          • http://www.martinschmidler.com martinschmidler

You are right, not having these services in other countries is even worse!
For me though c&p is super important and I´m lucky to have at least Xbox Live and Zune Videos working here (Zune pass is still limited to US&UK…)

    • jimski

Did you ever consider the fact that maybe iPhone and Android got c&p wrong. Maybe there is a better way.

  • http://twitter.com/jimmyfal @jimmyfal

I'm amazed that MS put her on stage. I'm sure she is a very nice person, but she had no business being on stage. Where the HELL is Joe Belfiori for this stuff anyway. Get him out of the phone department and put him up on stage EVERY time. JEEEEESUUUSSSSSS

  • John

I agree where is Joe? what the hell MS does ready this anyway. I think they don't care much. 28 months making this OS and a basic flip phone can do more. out of the gate WP7 crashed. I'm ready to pass mine off if this update isn't soon .

    • Brianna

I will trade your my flip phone with your Windows Phone. I love my Samsung Focus and wouldn't mind having a 2nd Windows Phone.

  • rsg

God you people moan like a bunch of kids.

Waaaaahhhhhhhhh you're not doing it right…

  • http://www.facebook.com/nizzon Johan Nilsson

Jeeesus Christ how annoying can you be? I couldn't stand listening to her for more than 10 sec.
I know I know we are moaning but COME ON!! MS should be covering ALL angels with this product, even thinking twice about who they put on stages to promote their new baby.
    Shape up!

  • Mesonto

You cannopt get loactions in Canada. COmmon MS add this yesterday, there are a lot of non-american users!

  • TKETZ196

I have to say she did kind of annoy me, but not as much as some others, but i can see their point. Aside from that, I am glad to see MSFT finally adding this functionality. It is quite baffling why they would not add that into their OS since their (now) legacy OS had it since its induction over a decade ago.

In regard to weak implementation of cut, copy, paste, they did have to get around patents. I think they should have added a button (like a “text selection mode”) and then be ab;e to click, drag, highlight, etc. I am not a WP7 user, as I am still using WM 6.1. I’m not ready yet, and currently Win-Mo fulfills everything I need.

Why would they keep pushing the fact they have a dedicated camera button? who cares about that! Most MSFT pocket pc’s have one, and if not the end user can re-assign a hard button to be a camera button. The cool thing though is the camera app can run on top of the lock screen.

I hope they keep chugging along with updates. I would expect that almost every week this year WP7 should be getting hit with updates, tons of updates. I also hope to see the marketplace balloon up even further. I am going to wait for more functionality and improvements before I decide on upgrading to WinPhone7

  • koyce

i would expect they had implemented cut, copy and paste and not c&p alone. This might be implemented properly in the future cos its obvious they had rush it out

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000479683479 Milad Bazzaz

wtf…seems like the lady is retarded or something.

    • koyce

shes got too much energy. She will appeal to women.

Her mouth is so wide but I like her though.

  • Steven

She was annoying, her voice lackluster and visually… Microsoft really blew it here big time. They take their newest 'hip' product and have someone unappealing, unnatural sounding presentation. Whomever at Microsoft chooses their presenters should be immediately fired for now just totally missing the mark, they embarrassed the company by using her as the presenter. Am sure she is a truly wonderful person, yet for product presentation and the ay she delivered it…. EPIC FAIL.

PS: Love my WP7 phone, am a longtime journalist and editor of an online consumer electronics magazine. It deeply saddens me to say the above, yet someone needs to tell the truth. it is th only way MS might learn from their mistakes.

    • D12

It's actually sad that something mundane like a CES appearance can "deeply sadden" you.

    • mario

she seemed like a nice person, you're an a-hole

  • sab0tage

    I think she's on speed.

  • sean

Wow. I guess MS thinks their primary market is 'Mom with two kids and crack addiction'

I suppose every product has it's niche market.

  • http://www.sataris.com.au Sataris

No cut is annoying, especially if I'm working on a rather large email or doc, but deleting a section myself isn't that hard, and besides, if you're making complex changes to your presentation/email or document on your phone, you're probably better off waiting until your at a PC to make real changes.

Man, I don't understand why everyone is going so hard on her. Yes I watched the video, yes she was "different" than the usual Microsoft presenters but she got the job done and got the message across. Maybe too because I work with really annoying women on a daily basis and all they do is "blah blah blah" during the day with no sort of substance but the MS presenter had information which was on topic, I was glad to hear it and she did a great job relaying the message. Sometimes I think some of these large companies have to push various people into the spotlight and show the world that they don't hire "one particular type of person" or "group of people" and sometimes who they pick will differ from the mainstream.

  • jimski

May have to watch the video again but don't remember hearing the words "Zune" or "music" one time. Maybe they wanted to underemphasize the feature to direct users to a potential new Zune device. As I am not a big gamer, Zune Pass and the Music hub are one of the best features of this new phone. Office is Office. Been there, done that. But Zune is the future.

    • Eric

True. I am keeping my WP7 phone just for Zune and Emails.

      The rest is actually crap.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000479683479 Milad Bazzaz

the reason people are confused with her is that whatever she did, good or bad, Belfiore is a billion times better for this stuff. He is calm, articulate and he knows better than anyone how to represent certain features on WP7.

You have a great presenter like Belfiore and you go with a woman with a thin voice and impulsive presentation, then it combines to a failure.

She might be nice etc. but nobody cares about your character when you are on the stage, either you can present or you can't and she couldn't. The point is not to get the message across, the point is to get the message across the right way with the most possible effect.

  • Eric

My God…. MS is trying hard to fail…

I think the January update will be no more than this cut & paste…

    • YAMAN

What is the big deal with the "CUT" if you want to "CUT" first "COPY" then "DELETE" and job done, same as "CUT" – NO?

Be realist how many times do you use "CUT" for the long hand to become anoying. Now "CUT" the CRAP and enjoy the new OS!

  • Eric

Sorry… no cut, so "this COPY & paste"

    • oslik

I've probably never used the cut on a PC and I definitely won't use it on a phone. The probability of doing something wrong way and loosing my data is 10 times higher on a phone. At least.

  • oslik

Sorry for the funny english. ;-)
