Microsoft’s YouTube app breaks

I never use Microsoft’s own YouTube app, it being merely a shortcut to Google’s mobile web page and some underlying code to pipe the video stream to the media player.

That would explain why I never noticed that it is no longer working, and according to the tweets above for at least a few days now.

We know some bad blood exists between Google and Microsoft after the later refused to allow Microsoft to build a much better dedicated YouTube app. It seems Google has now managed to break even Microsoft’s limited effort.

Agreed. However, MS needs to allow the ability to set a default player so when you click on a link it opens up lazytube or which ever you have installed without having to copy and paste the links. At least until Google stops being a little @()*$%.

Since the last update my LazyTube keeps crashing on startup. I works fine the first time after I re-install it, after which it fails at each attempt.

The Youtube plug-in still works if someone embeds a youtube video on their site. But links to Youtube videos no longer work.

well, at least you still have the app. It’s been gone from the marketplace for over a month here (as is the Microsoft Tag app for example).

Though I was able to watch an embedded video without the app a few days ago. Must have been html5, can’t explain it otherwise.

If they get to 20% of Android’s market share that’s a distant 3rd – maybe 4th overall. I doubt Google would care.

Boggles the mind then why so many WP7 users stick with google’s services. Apart from them using your data for their own profit they go out of their way to screw the platform. Stop using them and giving them the power then maybe they wont act like such dick heads.

I’d be surprised. GV is free and, with Gmail Voice chat, has killed my need for an high minute plan and a home phone. But I don’t think it’s profitable for Google. Only thing it is giving them is a ton of content for refining their voice recognition tech.

MS is using TellMe and currently getting their content from WP and Kinect. If they want to use Skype in that capacity going forward, that’d be great but I don’t see it ever being free like GV.

You think all this data gathering is for the honorable purpose of improving their voice recognition? Here is the thing, you KNOW these kinds of data services would cost you a few bucks but in exchange for you getting it for free, you open up your personal life to people you don’t even know is watching.

You give up a lot of your freedom and more important your privacy when you believe that companies like Google and their partners are actually giving you something and you are giving them nothing in return. They are in direct contact with everything you find important…up to and including what things trigger your mood.

Maybe its not a big deal for you today or maybe you don’t see it today but Google is no longer the search engine that could. They are a mega billion dollar corporation and has become very dirty.

If you haven’t noticed, everything they do these days, from secretly gathering data from open and lightly secured wifi with Street View to this latest stunt with Google Plus; they are about getting as deep in your privacy as they can get.
Maybe its time we at least spread this out. I’d much rather pay and keep my privacy than put my families business onto Google’s servers.

I try to watch the vids using the HTML5 browser.. but it only works with videos that dont have ads.. which is like 0.05%

I disabled all my Google accounts a few months back… and I only use their search engine on a desktop now – nothing else.

This may or may not be Google (I’m not sure how concrete the evidence is), but I still don’t like the way the company is heading.

And they are !@#$ing about others being anti-competitive.. The only reason they wont allow them to build a real youtube app is because they dont want their service on competitors operating systems.

Better yet, microsoft should release a windows update which breaks the usage of loading youtube all together on all PC’s.

I honestly don’t believe it just that alone. YouTube is coming for Xbox. I think because of the market share the Xbox has it would be fool hardy not to allow it. but because WP7 is underdog now, its in Google’s best interest to let the platform be very unattractive by crippling it where every device is expected to support,YouTube.

The Youtube implementation on WP7 has always been pretty weak. Even though apps such as LazyTube and Super Tube are awesome, Google are dicks and only allow access to the mobile versions of the videos.

I was wondering if I was the only one. The performance on youtube has never been stellar on my Focus, but it has flat out now worked in like a week as far as I know. I was able to watch the video on the next post on this site about the new WPs on my phone though and it is a Youtube video so idk.

Google has always been shady in its intentions. Besides trying to suppress MS by allowing manufacturers to benefit from a free os, they use personal information to make money. With the buying of Motorola how long until all the new releases come to them first and everybody else gets seconds. How long until Google turns into Apple and don’t allow competition access to its services or os. They claimed that MS business model is too outdated well their model might be too futuristic. They have digitized every book, archive, whats the deal. Yet people follow them whole heartedly. Microsoft is not an angel by any means but it is so far the lesser of both evils and at least its intentions for the past 20 years has been clear, make stock holders money and lots of it. Google certainly seems to have hidden agendas. It bought Gizmo and then killed the technology, how many others has it done that to. Google has not supported MS in any one thing until now there is a clear objective by Google to kill Microsoft. Apple to them is a road map to follow. Where is the innovation, the new kid on the block swag, gone… Technology is ever changing who knows something new will come up and we wont even be using Google or search anymore, maybe we will use a cognitive system like the brain where we just think of something and the most relative items are demonstrated to us intuitively using A.I.technology instead of ranking of pages by meta-tags. Just saying….

This is the primary reason why I don’t want one company owning all these other services. The more I know google, the less I give a fluck about them. I’ve already begun to migrate my email out of gmail and onto live.com.

I now import all my email into hotmail, I use Bing, and the only things I still use on Google is Youtube and Blogger. Pretty soon it will only be youtube. BTW: I tried the youtube app and it works. Or use the HTC Youtube app. It is free.

I remember an article saying that SuperTube and LazyTube had to modify their software recently, because YouTube changed something.

I suspect MS just forgot to adapt its software accordingly.

No problems here on Mango. Clicking on the official YouTube “app” still opens the web browser to http://m.youtube.com. In fact, from today onwards, http://m.youtube.com on WP7.5 got updated to HTML5 interface. It feels “almost” like an app!
