More than 2 million Windows Phones shipped last year!

Ina Fried at AllthingsD reports that Microsoft has announced shipping more than 2 million Windows phones 7 devices in 2010, in the quarter ending December. (edit: Exact number 2.1 million according to ZDNet)

Given that Microsoft has announced that 1.5 million devices have shipped in December, this suggests the initial shipment has sold through, and more than 1.5 million handsets are now in the hands of consumers, which should be good news for developers hoping to make money of the platform.

Brand awareness has jumped 22 points to 66 percent since it was released, said Microsoft’s Greg Sullivan.

Microsoft also announced record customer satisfaction on AT&T with the OS, with an AT&T spokesman saying 93 percent of early customers are “satisfied” or “very satisfied,” adding, “That’s a really great number.”

“We believe this shows that Windows Phone has a bright future in an intensively competitive space,” the AT&T spokesman added.

“The numbers show pretty good momentum on the sales of the platform,” said Al Hilwa, an analyst at tech research firm IDC. “Anecdotally almost everyone who has seen the phone has commented on the style and fluidity of the interface. The apps numbers are excellent for this early stage of the lifecycle.”

…and now, for a more accurate representation of these numbers: http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/26/microsoft-over

    • http://wmpoweruser.com wmpoweruser

      Tamarai, minus 1 for you.

    • Jake

How is that more accurate? Surur clearly says that 2 million have shipped, not sold, and it's perfectly reasonable to assume that the 1.5 million that MS previously mentioned have sold since shipments have since increased. In fact, Engadget should have mentioned this in their post.

    • Keith

Endgadget did not even report it only included sales up to the end of December sales–typical Engadget anti-Microsoft distortion.

      • Bob

That was one of the most unprofessional tech stories I've ever read. The writer is claiming that Microsoft has only sold 2 million "licenses". He didn't even say that it was 2 million actual devices shipped to retailers. He provided no citation either. He might as well have pulled those numbers of out his backside.

    • Displeased Reader

Tamari, you are absolutely correct. Surur does not know how to interpret data.

I'm more concerned about Greg Sullivan's later comments about releasing the first Windows Phone 7 update "within the next few months." Did it really just get pushed back again? http://news.cnet.com/8301-10805_3-20029652-75.htm

    • zzz

Yeah they may be trying to be more realistic here. It's possible the marketing dept (not engineering) was too optimistic trying to drum up excitement early on. I've always thought CDMA by Jan/Feb was too good to be true.

      • Mark Jonson

Well, Microsoft has been saying the first update was coming within "the next few months" since November. I already have my phone, but I know others who are waiting for the first update to come around so they can see if some of the bugs get fixed. I'd also like them to take care of some of the issues in Zune and the Marketplace. In addition, I know a few people on Verizon who won't be leaving just for the phone, but if Verizon had a Windows Phone they would likely buy it when they become eligible for an upgrade this spring.

        • zzz

I'm a little perplexed by this "with the next few months" quote. It might be just a misquote by Cnet. Otherwise, that would be a significant time shift for the first update promised for Jan/Feb.

Regarding CDMA, I think the earliest report back in October had it for 1st half of this year. And then people began to speculate an earlier release based on the MS employee preorder information and Paul Thurrott's article. Now it looks like it's back to the "1st half" time frame. Oh well.

          • http://wmpoweruser.com wmpoweruser

I had thought the cut and paste and CDMA update was the same update now they seem separate.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000096491109 Mj Williams

they did…me thinks cnet got it wrong in fact CES indicated that copy and paste with CDMA support AND qualcomm future chipsets were going to be bundled in this update with mango occurring later on this year

  • zzz

Pretty good! Although I hoped for a bigger number back in October, I would still say WP7's launch has been successful. Some people like Engadget seem to like comparing to iphone's launch but I think they are way off the mark and are just being lazy intellectually. The key in the article is that A) AT&T is supporting WP7 strongly and B) 93 percent of early customers are “satisfied” or “very satisfied,” and recommend the phone to others. I can't emphasize enough how important these are, especially the 2nd point. When you combine that with backings from heavyweights like MS, Samsung, AT&T and others, it assures platform's success. People just need to be patient and don't pay too much weight on what attention seekers like Paul Thurrott have to say.

    LOL…. he/she got owned.

  • Tamarai

At least I write honestly ;) Turns out, 3rd time was a charm. I waited until October and got another one, it's worked without issue since.

Regardless of my iPhone experience, that doesn't change that fact that the information penned by Surur is most often skewed and inaccurate. I don't see how dredging up my previous experience as a customer in any way contributes to a discussion of WP7 sales figures.

It would be much better if Surur would spend his time researching information specific to the mobility marketplace rather than attempting to resurrect unrelated historical postings in an attempt to deflect someone pointing out his lack journalistic abilities. Try accurate, unbiased writing for a change — you've not done so yet, and may find you like it — your site can only benefit ;)

This is a true troll, bring a note of the main site pro apple like engadget has no sense now follow with bored of your phone, the iphone since this dying in the hands of the samsung galaxy

  • http://twitter.com/EJ1024 @EJ1024

You guys can't compare iPhone v1.0 to wp7, first of all wp7 was released worldwide and with 9 devices, iPhone was the only one with one carrier, when n it comes to numbers we can't win against the iPhone, remember iPhone is only 1 PHONE. LETS COMPARE THE BEAUTY OF WP7 VS IOS, APPLE 1.O GOT NOTHING ON MSFT WP7, I KNOW THE SALES WILL ADD UP IN TIME, WITH THE UPCOMING UPDATES AND NEW HARDWARE COMING SOON. ALL THIS TALK ABOUT MSFT IS LATE IN THE RACE!!!! FANBOYS,,,, THIS IS MICROSOFT NOT GOOGLE!!!!!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000096491109 Mj Williams

      not exactly dude
let's give iphone ver. 1 the 22 country release 4 months after initial release and compare the number http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:IPhone_sales_pe
in that both phones are doing pretty well all things considered
secondly regarding google microsoft is doing a bit better than the g1 after initial quarter and 6 months w/international release

      • Duncan

The iPhone took 74 days to sell its first million (admittedly only in one market).

Android took 71 days to reach 1 million (admittedly largely based on one device).

WP7 had been available for 71 days by the end of December – so if only 1 million of those 2.1 million licence sales were to customers (assuming that's what the iPhone and Android sales figures represent) then it's at least matched Android's initial success (and, with largely resistent network sales forces plus supply problems, that's at least as impressive as it's predecessors).

    Surur, your website is ridiculous.
Firstly, I would like to point out that your ads are intrusive and look absolutely ridiculous because they are stacked 3 high. Simply by using an ad-block tool the website becomes graphically disfigured.

Secondly, your writers are immature and cannot properly write an article without plagiarizing from another source. I recently noticed an article that said 'u' instead of 'you.'

Thirdly, the article you are sourcing says that 2.1 million Windows Phones were LICENSED to OEMs. This does not mean shipped or sold. You exaggerate data and misinterpret it.

Finally, I own a Windows Phone 7. I love my Windows Phone 7 but will not be a completely biased fanboy because it has many faults. The iPhone 4 is a great phone. Sure, Apple isn't my favorite company, but they make great products. Just because they are expensive doesn't make them bad.

Clean up your website. Your foolish and immature attitude does not deserve the pageviews that you receive.

Also, downvote this comment into hell. If it is downvoted, I'll know that this website is full of hicks and read by no-brain idiots. At which point, I will realize that most Windows Phones are also owned by retards.

    • SomeoneinWA

I wince when I see typos on this website and others but I will cut Surur a lot of slack because this site has, by far, more complete coverage of WP development than any other and usually without the snark and faux-hipster crap of certain other sites. When you, displeased reader, produce your own website on WP that competes with this one, you can blast this one. Until then, if you don't like, don't read it. And certainly please spare us more of your opinions.

      • Tamarai

What other sites are you comparing it to? Using the phrase "by far, more complete coverage of WP development than any other" without a reference to anything in particular pretty much qualifies you for a senior editing post at WMPowerUser.com… Yay…

Nothing wrong with readers pointing out the inaccuracies and lack of quality writing for new readers that might stumble upon this site — those looking for honest, accurate, and unbiased news and information should definitely go elsewhere ;)

        • SomeoneinWA

I'll let you find the other sites that discuss WP. I am under no obligation to guide you. Try Google or Bing if you need help. You are correct that readers can and should point out inaccuracies, but there is no need to do it with insults and overbroad characterizations.

          • benjitek

So then are you stating that this is the only sight with good info on WP7? In what way? Your postings aren't clear and don't seem to be saying anything with substance, just random statements with no basis in anything :(

I've got to agree with Displeased Reader.

Surur, you have a school playground ability to interpret figures and stats, your stories consistently jump to wild conclusions on positive aspects of WP7 without reading the numbers sensibly.

WP7 is great. It also has many failings. I want Microsoft to succeed with it.
Rampant "fanboyism" from sites like this do nothing but embarrass your more sensible readers, and make this site a bit of a joke to anyone else.

I come to this site for WP7 news, not mindless editorial and endless "LOOK THIS PROVES WP7 IS GREAT AND THE IPHONEY SUXXORZ LOL ROFLMAO!!1!!" style misinterpretation.
You would be doing this site, and its future a favour if you tidy this crap up a bit. Leave the editorial for reviews. Report the facts, good or bad.

      • http://wmpoweruser.com wmpoweruser

And I shall reply to you similarly, if you dislike the "school playground ability to interpret figures and stats, your stories consistently jump to wild conclusions on positive aspects of WP7 without reading the numbers sensibly" please leave.

        Good day.

            Goodbye to you too.

Too bad the writing of articles at this website isn't nearly as good as her writing about the initial experience she had with the iPhone-4
