More Windows Mobile 6.5 build 23022 screen shots – starting to look pretty great

XDA hacker Shadowline has published a series of screenshots showing of the latest improvements in Windows Mobile 6.5 build 23022.  Apparently the changes break compatibility with many applications, but hopefully this is not a permanent situation.

Firstly, the move of the OK button to the bottom of the screen seems like a permanent feature.

The task bar now features enlarged icons when you tap it, with the list scrollable horizontally.

Screen6502

The volume icon now produced a much larger and more finger-friendly pop-up.

Screen6506

This above picture is a mock-up, but the lock screen now appears to code for play controls while the device is locked, which should be a pretty cool feature.

Screen6505

Lastly, double-tapping anywhere on the screen now produces a magnifier pop-up.

The rate of improvement seems much faster than seen previously, and is likely the result of increased investment by Microsoft in their Mobile and Embedded Division.

Read this XDA-Developer thread for more details, and if you are more adventurous, a download of the cooked ROM.

Thanks wreiad for the tip.

Ugh, the new buttons are still very, very ugly and unappealing.

Am I the only person who had no trouble with the soft keys? They were the perfect size… I didn't even have a problem with the close button being up top, though I have an Omnia so you don't have to reach very far to the upper part of the screen.

I think people just don't know how to use resistive screens properly… I have pretty big fingers and I've never had as much trouble giving finger inputs as every non-iPhone touchscreen user seems to.

When the X button is hidden, the soft keys looks so stupid because they are no longer centered in the bottom bar… who is designing this? Even as an early implementation it looks terrible – I learned to make those buttons when I was in 9th grade back in 2000.

I like the new lock screen for the windows mobile media player. The player controls look super cool especially with the graphics.

They should align the soft keys on the bottom and eliminate the top task bar slowly and make it like Vista Aero's Glass feature. so that it can fade a bit so you could see whats at the top

You can put lipstick on a pig, well its still a fugly pig.
why not just focus on winmo7 making it modern (it better be prettier+usable than iphone/android/pre) and leave winmo6.1 as it is. htc and samsung already done great job hiding winmo6.1 ugliness.

  • joenine

so are these for the first 6.5 devices that will ship or is this for an update to 6.5 that will arrive later?

  • Peter

They should leave the softkeys at the edges of the screen and align the X and keyboard button at the center, side by side.

  • Peter

Or leave it at the top and make an OKBack hardware button mandatory.

You know, I hate tapping the "X" /"Ok" button on the top right of the screen.. Too small.. Hmm.. But, I still love Windows Mobile! And, I think, these screen shots show that the design team is working hard to improve on WM..

All you guys saying that it doesn't look good, Pls. Give them some slack. I think the new designs look great !!

I can't wait to get my hands on WM 6.5 / 7.0++… Cheers!

    Ugly…

  • Arif

I like it – definitely the way forward!!

Well if you remember the leaked mockups for windows 7 from 6-th january 2008, you will see what microsoft aim with WM 6.5.1 :P

Windows mobile 7 has nothing in common with current interface :)

Hey xplode how are you? nice to see you around the web… searching for new builds to kick up!!! at XDA devs… See ya!

  • andrey

Like the concept. Not a fan of the early look
    i would prefer:
    [OK][Soft1][Soft2][KB]

All of you guys who are complaining and shit should not even post. You guys must want to stay using the stylus and always having to tap more than once to close something. Cant you see that putting the ok button and the bottom will be so much easier. So what if the icons on the bottom dont line up. now all the useful buttons are on the bottom where it takes less travel to get to them. I personally think 6.5 is and will be my favorite os from here on out. 6.1 is dead and anyone who uses it still is stuck in the past and scared of change. Cannot wait for this to officially realeased. I love it.

Exactly!!!!! is easy to hit the ok and X OMG its begun finger friendly but the ROM is very buggy and the images at the UI needs a lil polish job to date… with 25025. Oh BTW the WMP controls has been deleted… =P
