More Windows Mobile 6.5 screen shots – the honeycomb is REAL

Exeda, likely jumping the gun a little, has released 2 pictures of their dual boot smartphone running Windows Mobile 6.5 ALPHA, as they call it.

While called Alpha, the build seen in the picture may actually be more advanced than the ROM leaked earlier, as it features some enhancements only rumoured at before.

Of note immediately is that the honeycomb-based app launcher is in fact real. It seems it will make use of the new scrolling capabilities of the OS, and is romoured to automatically sort regularly used and relevant applications close to each other.

The second is in fact that its clear that X-button, the bane of finger-based usage, is now significantly larger.

Lastly, of note in the second picture is that the wall paper in the picture extends across both the softkeys and taskbar, similar to how it does on Windows Mobile Standard 6.1. This opens up great skinning possibilities and obviously can do wonders for the appearance of the OS.

Lets hope the leaks continue in the run-up to the official announcement, expected at Mobile World Congress on February 16th.

A-Gps mean Compulsory have a normal GPS inside ?

It needs GPS so it could use aGPS. aGPS is only a name for assisted GPS which means normal satellite based GPS and cell towers triangulation or some kind of operator info server(for example this is what iPhone 1G used in google maps). It is used for speeding up the time needed for getting the fix.
About Compulsory I don’t know what it is but as I said if it says aGPS it has normal GPS in it.
You can check wikipedia if you wan’t to know the details.

About the device. It might be one of the ugliest ever made but it wasn’t designed to be a mass market device. It is the ultimate geek device. It supports android, wm, angstrom linux, winCE that is why it has mouse pointer, left/right mouse button, ethernet port, usb host.

Mass market wm 6.5 devices will probably come somewhere around 2Q/3Q and I think that the final version will look even more refined than what we have now so it will be a good thing. But I hope that the changes won’t be confined only to the GUI but that the core will be improved and that the multimedia options will offer support for more codecs and containers. This way we wouldn’t have to install 3rd party programs for video/audio playback.

Good thing that MWC is no more than 3 weeks from now
