More Windows Mobile 6.5 screen shots – the honeycomb is REAL

Exeda, likely jumping the gun a little, has released 2 pictures of their dual boot smartphone running Windows Mobile 6.5 ALPHA, as they call it.

While called Alpha, the build seen in the picture may actually be more advanced than the ROM leaked earlier, as it features some enhancements only rumoured at before.

Of note immediately is that the honeycomb-based app launcher is in fact real. It seems it will make use of the new scrolling capabilities of the OS, and is romoured to automatically sort regularly used and relevant applications close to each other.

The second is in fact that its clear that X-button, the bane of finger-based usage, is now significantly larger.

Lastly, of note in the second picture is that the wall paper in the picture extends across both the softkeys and taskbar, similar to how it does on Windows Mobile Standard 6.1. This opens up great skinning possibilities and obviously can do wonders for the appearance of the OS.

Lets hope the leaks continue in the run-up to the official announcement, expected at Mobile World Congress on February 16th.

All this Hype is making 6.5 more then it looks to be.

Adding a Start Menu replacement isn’t innovating, it’s catching up at a minimum.

It’s still the Same MO as ussual.

Stuff Gets Leaked, Rumours about legal complaints about leaks, people get hyped.

And in the end all we get is some tweaked scrolling and a startmenu and as ussual a slew of new bugs and incompatibility issues.

I love the transparent top and bottom bars, and the honeycomb is amaaazing.

But errr, how, how, how may I ask does this fare against something like the Pre (I know Pre has some limitations, but the WM interface is STILL the same, just a different today screen, which Pointui will most likely blow out of the water anyway)?

Please, don’t let 6.5 be this disappointing.

I dont know if you heard the saying that a change is as good as a vacation, but having the interface we have been using since PPC 2002 updated is pretty good in any case.

WM does not use the same paradigm as the iPhone or Pre. Thats just the way it is, and if it was it would be called a clone.

WM 6.5 seems to be the largest UI update ever. WM 5 just added the softkeys for example. I do not however expect it to change everything, and I expect most apps will look more or less the same.

it will however bring many new services to Windows Mobile, and the utility of the OS will continue to increase.

So I would suggest, in terms of graphics updates, lower your expectations, and if graphics is your main measure of success, you may want to move.

However if you appreciate the ability of your WM phone to get work done, and are happy with a moderate improvement in the appearance of the OS, I would say stick around.

good point!
i just want the OS “footprint” to be smaller.
that way it takes up less memory and makes it quicker!
thats all i ask, now…if they can someway make the current technology do what the microsoft surface screen can do…THAT would be revolutionary!
but i know we, more than likely, will need a more advanced phone for that….
well…maybe!
im liking the current UI.
just curious to what the rest of the OS looks like (like the setting menu).
im not lowering my expectations…i want it to ROCK!
but i dont want it to lose what it currently has (the ability to infinitely customize).
but, once the community developers get it we`re gonna change everything on it anyway

As they said this is only alpha version so it may look better in the final version although even now it looks quite good.
About graphic and all those fancy options and transitions. There are many applications that can do the same and those are free applications(lets hope that it stays that way). So there is hope that with SkyMarket we’ll see many of those and maybe when casual users start using them, then people will see that WM can be as eye catchy as WebOS, iPhone and android.

If it happens next WM should get even better and get more positive market reception than it gets now.

They should just take the Tegra interface, revamp it to make it more end-user friendly, and more practical, rather than swirling a circle halfway just to use the phone function, and use that as default .

I’m very much looking forward to two things before or during WM6.5: Pointui Home 2, and Schaps TouchXperience ROMs.

I think there’s no need to give any more power to WinMo: it’s THE most powerful OS out there. All they need to do is bring the GUI up-to-date, which seems unlikely with 6.5.

Admin, you make a point about GUI not being the be-all and end-all, but then we all know the average Joey doesn’t care about how powerful WM is; they care about usability, which is why iPhone has grown popular so quickly. Whereas WM has remained stagnant, but only been given a small boost with the Diamond and, maybe Omnia. I know you’re going to say that WM outsold iPhone, but think about it, iPhone is ONE phone, and the combined might of WM with dozens of OEMs together beat them by how much? Not a great deal I’d say. Not for a company that spreads its wings over dozens of OEMs. I’m not saying I like the iPhone, I quite hate it, but no-one can deny that comparing the GUIs, WM pales in comparison, becomes brittle and falls to pieces.

Not to sound offensive, but when we, the consumers go lax with MS, and give them every excuse, then this is why we get products which we could’ve conceived better than as an afterthought sitting on the toiletseat. It is true, but what if MS has been giving us pooh for the last 5 years, are they justified in giving us wee now? I’d argue not. I think they need to step up to the COMPETITION in terms of UI, rather than just turning it up a notch from what they produced in the past.

Hope this clarifies on what I said earlier. And here’s to hoping the best for WM6.5 and WM7!

Its not a disadvantage.

Are you actually seriously thinking of buying the Exeda? Its meant to be an industrial device I think.

I understand why it’s cool, but it’s not all that attractive IMHO.

I like the form factor, but i think, the keyboard is too small for me.

The A-GPS is not avantageous for people using only Tomtom. The A-GPS require data to download map operator.

I don’t understand why many Manufacturers look’s like HTC, Samsung, LG etc, build a product in 2009 with only 2Mpix and Especially with A-GPs.

I thing, The A-GPS is a conspiration or an Agreement between the Manufacturer and the operator to promote the product to make an Exclusivity.

That’s what i think.

aGPS means that you have normal GPS but you can use cell towers to determine the location faster! If you use only cell towers it’s not GPS!
