Morgan Staley: Nokia shipped 1 million Lumia handsets in Q4 2011

We posted on this story earlier, but then we were more concerned with future predictions of Nokia selling 37 Windows Phones in 2012.

TechRadar however spotted a completely different angle on the story, noting that with that little 1 above the 2011 column Morgan Stanley has indicated Nokia has shipped 1 million Lumia handsets in 2011, all within the last 6 weeks of the year.

That number would exceed estimates by certain analysts which pegged the number as low as 380,000 but of course there remains the difference between shipped to phone stores and actually sold to customers coming through the doors.

It is unlikely Microsoft will start releasing activation numbers until they have something impressive to announce, likely leaving us with rough estimates for some time still.

Sounds great Surur, but what about that little e that means estimates?

  • Hotmail Alias

Please stop jumping at everything that squeaks. Next you’ll have a post when someone notices the ‘e’ after 2011, 2012, 2013 which means the figures are estimates.

I’m pretty sure that that prediction will be exceeded by a wide margin :-)

I do not think Nokia will release numbers or is willing to, because to people outside of Nokia it’s pretty meaningless and you would get speculations. Only Nokia knows what the number is and only Nokia knows if that’s a good enough number.

If Nokia sold 200k, people would say it’s bad, but maybe Nokia would think it’s fine for now.

Or if Nokia sold 2 million, people would say awesome, and maybe Nokia would think they could have done better.

It’s best to just not mention anything at all then, there are way too many speculators and analysts out there who can’t wait to write their baseless article to drive the stock up or down.

nokia has no choice but to release numbers
they always release numbers in their quarter calls for their stock holders…and I think that’s happening in 13 days

I was going to say the samething, I believe they must release eventually the numbers during investor calls.

Those number will be mixed with symbian and meego, so  you will not know specific number for WP7.

Good or bad, I’m looking forward to hear how they’re doing.

Surur, you’re comparing apples and oranges here.

These numbers are “shipped by nokia to retailers” estimates.

The earlier numbers were “sold by retailer” estimates.

These two sets of numbers are entirely consistent – you would expect the nokia shipment numbers to be higher than the retailer sales numbers, unless the retailers are putting bricks in the boxes…

Yes, it wouldn’t be at all excessive to say they needed half a million phones or so to fill the supply chain. This is very similar to the original WP7 launch when people latched on to early shipment numbers and ignored the realities of how a supply chain works.

Numbers will be released by Nokia I guess…

it really remains to be seen, the jury is still out on this platform’s success (not their quality).

If Microsoft isn’t releasing anything, its because its not good enough for them to feel its a significant figure. No numbers are better than bad numbers.
