Motorola wants same deal as Nokia from Microsoft

imageAt a recent industry conference Motorola Mobility’s Sanjay Jha has confirmed once again that they are open to developing a Windows Phone 7 handset.

"I think we’re completely open to the notion of Windows as a platform," Jha said in an appearance at the Oppenheimer Technology & Communications Conference.

He confirmed however that they would only do it if they achieved special partner status like Nokia has, saying otherwise that at present "clearly, all of our focus today is on Android."

Jha was still waiting to see which OS will shake it for the 3rd place, saying only one of  Windows Phone 7, webOS and RIM can survive.

While Motorola has seen an early revival from adopting Android, the company has not been able to maintain their momentum, suffering an operating loss once again in the most latest quarter.

Yup, because they have as much to offer as Nokia does. Motorola Maps, Motorola Distribution, Motorola Store, oh wait.

    • Anonymous

Yeah just what I was thinking. Nokia has services, hardware, and regional (Outside the US) presence/experience that MS can use greatly to benefit from. Moto has almost none of that. I would love to see Moto jump in and make some WP devices, but to expect as much “clout” as Nokia is a joke.

    • http://www.facebook.com/thomas.bundgaard Thomas Bundgaard

Then again, they do have a good name in USA, afaik.

Imagine a situation alá the Droid – perhaps with a phone named “Motorola Seven”, “Motorola Phone” or something like that, that plays on the name of WP.

      • Anonymous

HTC and Samsung have a good name in the US, but they arent selling like hotcakes.

        • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/6G3ZZJCHOLYP3S5CRCIHQ7WDSE MVIM

Actually, they really are in terms of smartphone sales. Pretty much all Verizon sells nowadays is HTC and Motorola. AT&T sells a lot of Samsung and HTC phones too. Naturally Apple is up there in third place, and LG is a also comes to mind as a fourth. But in US smartphones, I can’t think of anyone who probably sells more than HTC and Samsung right now.

I just read a editorial at unwiredview.com about how Motorola Mobility could cut some of their losses by selling the division (and all of the IP) to Google as a way for Motorola/Google to fend of patent infringement claims from Microsoft, and others; this ‘offer’ to produce WP devices and the outrageous request for a Nokia-like deal, seems very disingenous, and a red herring…

  • http://www.flavors.me/fludlyt Fludlyt

    O RLY?

They don’t need the same deal as Nokia does. It would be good to have them on board either way.

  • Anonymous

Motorola CEO’s IQ just improved a couple points, but far from enough. He knows that MOTO has no chance on Windows 8 tablets, so he changed stance. But that’s not the way to do it. Nokia status? Who do you think you are? Someone needs to tell him what to do…

  • Anonymous

If I was Microsoft, I would leave Motorola dangling in the wind on WP7 and Windows 8. I wouldn’t let them make shit. Why? Because of all the crap multiple Motorola execs threw at WP7. They did nothing but talk shit, and refused to release a phone. Then again, their phones suck, so it was no big loss.

    • Anonymous

microsoft is not just letting motorola dangle, theyre actually suing them too

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shaun-Wignal/617841109 Shaun Wignal

Haha yup suing them and leaving them to hang theirselves on Andriod, I can’t believe the nerve of these jerks they were talking all this crap about WP7 a while back and all this about not supporting it because they were riding on Andriod train on the comfort seat, now their shit falling apart they coming crying to MS with demands for a Nokia like deal, I say Microsoft let them fall on their damn face those bastards.. they make shitty phones anyways..

    • Anonymous

Agree! Too late, Motorola. You had your chance; how hard was it for you to pump out one, maybe two WP7 devices back in October 2010? Now, you want to get on the WP7 train, but only if you get a contractual deal that mirrors Nokia’s? Just shows that you still don’t respect or believe in the WP platform, and that your efforts would be half-assed anyway!

      • Anonymous

Actually, you know what Motorola is saying here in code…”we can really do with the billions of dollars Microsoft in pumping into Nokia with their deal…and frankly, with the shitty returns we’re getting from our ‘exclusive’ Android shit, we sure do need the cash – badly!” So I say, piss in Motorola’s face, the way they did to Microsoft.

        • Richard Durishin

Yep! And this message is a harbinger for Android – which is too disorganized for the non-geek to enjoy.

          Motorola, R.I.P. Again!

Android – get ready for a flat growth curve.

You THINK your completely open to the NOTION of Windows as a platform? Am I reading too much into this but does it sound to you like he made this comment under duress?

not happening. fuck motorola and their clunky ugly designs

    • http://twitter.com/TheeBladeOGrass Michael Pendergraft

My feelings exactly! I think almost every on the post shares this opinion.

    • Richard Durishin

Well, don’t dis-credit their terrible OS overlays or their juvenile nomenclature.

  • Anonymous

They won’t get the same deal. They don’t have MS’s Trojan horse running their company. Motorola was a big reason why Android took off. From their high end phones, to their excellent commercials.

    • http://twitter.com/TheeBladeOGrass Michael Pendergraft

I got a high end Droid X at the house right now. Can’t get a signal 90% of the time since the update and the phone wont stay on my wifi. Also had a fabulous Motorola Q before my first iPhone, I’ll just leave that one alone. Maybe a Trojan horse wouldn’t hurt Motorola. I can’t wait until Motorola starts building WP7 phones with incompatible accessories between devices with similar specs and the same OS, like the Atrix accessories wont work with future Motorola models.

Go troll somewhere else loser. See your beloved Motorola, with their stupid comments about Microsoft and Windows Phone last year, and see where they are now. Learn a lesson!

We don’t need Google trojan horse troll here in this blog.

motorola never had commercials, those were verizon commercials. big difference

motorola is in the red right now because their phones are very shitty

So is Motorola saying they would be willing to drop Android support and make Windows Phones exclusively? Cause that is the Nokia deal.

Microsoft would be better off making that kind of deal with Samsung or RIM.

Motorola is only hurting their bottom line by limiting themselves to Android sales. HTC, Samsung, LG all benefit from being able to add Windows Phones to their bottom line. If Motorola Mobility wants to compete aggressively against these hardware manufacturers then they need to support as many platforms and carriers as possible. Motorola really doesn’t have much to threaten Microsoft with since they’re already supporting Android exclusively and failing. Motorola needs Microsoft more than MS needs Motorola.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZWIQU6F5MNQWGAIOKNHSCSJFDE Brian

What evidence do you have that Samsung, HTC, or LG are seeing enough WP7 business to make them anything more than lukewarm over the platform? Heck LG has come right out and said they’re disappointed in the results.

      • Anonymous

I think LG said that because at the time LG has the least desirable WP7 devices to offer. The Samsung and HTC models are selling well so why arent LG models….because the design of competing models are better.

      • Avatar Roku

Your comment bears no relation to anything that I wrote. I said those companies were making money and sales off of Windows Phone, whether they’re enthusiastic or not about Windows Phone is irrelevant. I have no idea how any company truly feels about any platform. Every single one of those companies including LG has multiple 2nd gen Windows Phone handsets coming out this year; Motorola does not.

The point was simply that LG, HTC, Samsung, and Motorola are all competing for cellphone market share and profit. Motorola is losing sales by not even competing in the Windows Phone space. If Motorola ever wants to have as much market share as Samsung then they need to be on every platform and every carrier.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZWIQU6F5MNQWGAIOKNHSCSJFDE Brian

There making sales but we have no idea if the sales are enough to make any profits for the handset makers. There are large fixed costs associated with releasing a competitive handset nowadays and it takes a pretty high volume for most manufacturers to make a product line profitable (just ask Motorola). High profitable manufacturers see their WP7 business is highly relevant.

Be WP exclusive and you’ll get a similar deal. But probably not on the level of Nokia, just because you don’t hold as much clout as Nokia. Nokia is HUGE.

  • http://profiles.google.com/bricko12 Bill Rickords

Maybe we can get them to develop a SYNC app for our Outlook via USB. Microsoft engineers are not competent enough apparently to write an app the used to have already. Why do I have to get an Apple phone to sync to my Outlook via USB.

Maybe Motorola or Nokia can write one for them. But it really should be built into the Win7 OS and rolled out via Windows Update as an app that offers you choices of sync methods…via USB, via Cloud etc.

I guess he missed the glaring memo that Nokia is all in on Windows Phone. He actually thinks they have more clout than Samsung and HTC? Delusional!

lol, I laughed upon reading, “I think we’re completely open to the notion of Windows as a platform,” all I would say to this is…”don’t take the bait Microsoft – don’t do it!”. Let Motorola die a slow death. Trust me, before the great Android shake out is finished, Motorola will come crawling and begging Microsoft to throw them a bone – any scraps that they can get.

    • http://twitter.com/TheeBladeOGrass Michael Pendergraft

Lol, yes, like Oliver Twist, “Please sir, I want some more”

  • http://twitter.com/efjay01 Ef Jay

This guy is just spouting BS to make a headline. They have no intention of making a WP7 device. If they did they would not put such ridiculous conditions like this in the way. Waiting for better adoption is valid, but when the best you have to offer is Motoblur and you are not willing to go WP7 exclusive as Nokia has then you are really not making this comment as any kind of serious statement. Just another attention seeking CEO, nothing more.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shaun-Wignal/617841109 Shaun Wignal

Ohh seriously don’t want that moto blur POS on WP7 at all, they can keep that crap to Andriod. not saying I hate Andriod but WP7 dont need that or sense or any other OEM junk.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/6G3ZZJCHOLYP3S5CRCIHQ7WDSE MVIM

Motorola is just worried that if Microsoft succeeds in their Android patent claims suit that their mobility division will be done with the fall of the gavel. Motorola likely wants to become a Windows Phone partner for the cash infusion, but also so that they can gracefully negotiate a licensing agreement for their patent infringements by making it look like a business decision to adopt Windows Phone instead of simply admitting complete defeat in their insistence that they are not in violation of Microsoft’s mobile patents.

  • http://profiles.google.com/blueandwhite89 Daniel Purdham

I say make them do a couple phones, if they turn out to be somewhat successful then give them a deal but not anywhere near the deal Nokia has. If the phones are !@#$ then tell them they can make as many phones as they want but wont be getting anything from MS.

  • Anonymous

No Motorola, noone cares about you. You suck. Your phones suck. Motoblur sucks, your locked bootloader strategy sucks. Stick with Android, and hope that Samsung and HTC don’t kill you. That is all.

  • Anonymous

All this one trick pony wants to do is slather Motoblur all over it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ricardo-Dawkins/746307628 Ricardo Dawkins

    Die Motoblur…..Die!

  • http://freddyt4444.myopenid.com/ Kruegerman

Microsoft wants breakfast, and Motorola is the chicken that comes offering the eggs. Nokia is the pig that has already offered the ham. Nokia is all in and committed. Motorola is not.

  • http://www.searingarrow.com AlienSix

“I think we’re completely open to the notion of Windows as a platform,”
ie. We realize that Windows Phone is about to blow up and we want in on it. Also although we think Windows is crap, we can add “unique value” by adding motoblur to the platform. Just hook us up with Nokia status.

Get lost Motorola. No one wants to hear it

  • Anonymous

I think the answer is if Motorola can pump mass WP 7 phones. If we’re talking about 2 or 3 phones a year…not worth it.

  • Anonymous

just wait for Motorola to keep getting trounced by Samsung and HTC in the Android arena and then they will rather quickly look for another way to differentiate themselves… If Moto was willing to drop Android development altogether I could see MS giving them the special partner treatment but Moto must be crazy to think they can get all the benefits as Nokia (a company betting it all on WP7) while still dealing Android

  • Anonymous

Motorola hasn’t produced a viable product outside of the US since Razr. They needed Android to save them from obsolescence in the face of competition by Apple, and actually missed the boat on being a Gen1 maker for WP7.

… and now they’re acting like they have interest in WP7 and actually want to customise it? Hell no. This company is dead meat outside of the patents it holds. They can’t compete outside of the US – their presence internationally pales in comparison to Samsung, HTC, and of course Nokia. They have nothing little to offer WP7 at this time.

If Motoblur was any indication, allowing them to customise the WP7 would be a bad idea.

  • http://twitter.com/Summerclaw Hansel

LOL at Motorola demanding shit. Their phones are hideous.
