NES Emulator created, blocked for Windows Phone 7

Matt Bettcher has ported an open source emulator for the famous NES platform to Windows Phone 7.  He says the code, at present unoptimised, runs at 10-20 frames per second on this Samsung Focus, which is not too bad at all.

He has however spoken to Microsoft, who has advised him the project will not be allowed in Marketplace, and he is asking for some community support to try and change Microsoft’s mind.  Of note is that even Apple has finally allowed emulators into the App Store.

Matt intends to release the app for free on Marketplace, and also make the app, which itself is based on Open Source code, open source. If you wish to join Matt’s campaign comment on his YouTube channel here.

Emulator are nice. Would be great if Microsoft allowed them.

Not to put is work down as when I has me HTC Desire I actually bought both the GBA and NES emulators on and used them. But, Everyone knows there are so many legal implications and laws and issues as such regarding the ROM side of things. The basic law is that so long as you own the game physically as it is originally you are legally allowed a ROM of that same game. Now I know I got my old unit from when I was 7 but I don't for the 1000's+ who purchase it would not. I want it. But it's not going to happen I think unfortunately.

Not that there aren't some great games available on WP7, but I would absolutely love some emulators on my Omnia 7. I do wonder what Nintendo would make of this though, if MS where to change their mind.

If Apple is allowing them, I see no reason we can't. The legality argument doesn't fly for me because there are torrent remote applications currently in the marketplace- and, sure, those are legal but…

I'm not surprised MS would not allow this, not so much for legality reasons but having a game emulator would be at odds with the XBox Live integration and undercut the sale of their own games.

Has anyone seen all those bad quality emulators in the Android Market? Do we really want them in our superior Marketplace? MICROSOFT DO NOT ALLOW APPS LIKE THESE

Bullshit, there are enough pointless Apps in the Marketplace already. It's free and nobody forces you to use it…

    • Dave

So in other words you don't want it so therefore no one else should have it either……How arrogant!

This is just another decision by Microsoft that pushes people towards hacking their phone so they can side load apps.

Honestly having tried all the emu on the iphone i can say that very few are actually playable. Still the option would be nice.

and by playable i mean controls….

Wow, this makes perfect sense to me dude. Wow.

Microsoft could capitalize by partnering with Nintendo and releasing ROMs for this emulator from within their own Marketplace and a dollar a piece. Why wouldn't they, other than possibly to get people to buy native WP7 games I guess?
