New Nokia Sea Ray picture reveals virtual buttons

nokiasearay

A leaked picture of the Nokia Sea Ray finally solves the mystery of the missing buttons on the device.

The picture reveals that the buttons are in fact screen based, likely using the extra 54 pixels of the N9’s 854×480 screen to display the buttons.

I am personally not a great fan of the arrangement, suggesting the device is really a lightly modified N9 rather that a device designed from the start for Windows Phone 7. If people were previously bothered by capacitive buttons, imagine how often users will accidentally exit out applications with the buttons so close to the screen content with this handset.

How do our readers feel? Let us know below.

Edit: For those who think it is a Photoshop, this screen shot from the video manages to show just the edge of the button, confirming the colour as greyish at least.

Secondly, could it be that the reason Nokia did not show the buttons was because they were embarrassed by them?

Also, whats up with all that wasted space below the buttons?

wait a minute. wasn’t the search button going to wake the phone even when it is locked? how come these virtual buttons going to do that?

    • Anonymous

good point. maybe this phone wont have this feature?

just think one minute: do you REALLY think nokia says they are going to do secret style and one week later, they reveal a product like this, ON THEIR OWN ??????
This is no costumer product. It’s a developing handset to show that they got Windows Phone working on their own Phones. They don’t want to reveal their Product design until like a few weeks before launch. Also I think that they are going to change the the UI to a more Nokia like style. You know, rounder Live-Tiles…

  • Dhaoracle

Yes those virtual buttons are hideous. A button-less phone would only work with the WP8 Apollo. I am getting a WP7.5 Mango phone but Nokia has shown us that they can make a beautiful WP8 Phone to look for in the future..

looks like fake buttons to me …

  • Volando

Take a look at this link: http://www.wpcentral.com/new-image-nokia-s-sea-ray-reveals-virtual-buttons

They pretty much describe all points i have noticed to…this is not final or its a fake…because of the shine and the not centred icons in the grey fields…

And i don’t get the “Edit” to the article. I don’t see any edge or grey thing…that little greyish “line” or whatever it looks like its just shine.

That grey area below the 22 is the virtual button, and is clearly not the bottom edge of the screen.

  • Anonymous

Forget about that. Anyone notice the front facing camera in the bottom right corner? That’s a first for WP7. Finally.

  • Anonymous

Wow…calm down people…its not fake. Its a developers device. Its obviously not gonna make the final release. You guys need to be realistic. Nokia’s first device isnt gonna blow us away. Its their second wave of devices where they’ve actually had time to tinker with the OS and optimize for their hardware that will blow our minds. Im personally looking forward to that Meego swipe to left notification screen. MS should really implement that…i love live tiles but no harm in back up notifications.

WOWZERS, this started quite a stir.

  • Anonymous

Cmon people. Use some sense. Prototype/Development device. That’s clearly not how it will be released (IF that model even gets released and isn’t just an internal only dev device like that ASUS model that’s been used since before WP7 released).

  • Anonymous

I believe the buttons will be hidden until you swipe up. So will not affect gaming at all.

  • Anonymous

folks, this is just a prototype- dont panic- i’m sure WHEN THE OFFICIAL WP7-phones will be announced(probably in aug-sept) they’ll ALL be quite cool…. and thats plural, phoneS….
    i know i’m gonna get me some….

Nokia isn’t dumb. They’re all about aesthetics. The picture shown is just a poor joke by someone with lots of time on their hands.

This is fake but even if we think it is not fake then you have to know this is prototype. They may want to have touch bouttons there and simply make it black bckground with 3 white icon later but for now just as prototype design it this way to see how things work. What most people miss here is the look and feel of ohone itselfs as of right now. For sure they don’t ship it like that. Microsoft used lots of great designers to come with cool concept and modern clean looking for Windows Phone and it seems they will bring it to Xbox and net version of Windows as well. So they are not gonna ship a beauiful device like that. This is just a work in progress and better to wait and see. I am sure final product will be very nice.

So far this phone looks good and seems like a right direction. Just this device itself easily bit HTC or SAMSUNG in term of designs for Windows Phone. I was a huge fan of HTC for long time and had many of their devices in last few years but I am really dissapointed the way HTC make Windows Phone. They started with Windows Phone and now they are all about Android crap and don’t put enough attention and work for their Windows Phone devices. And sadly (and maybe gladly) after switching from Nokia to HTC many years ago again it is time to switch back to Nokia.

It’s sad becuase HTC could be a very strong player in Windows Phone as well but seems like Nokia is the way to go for me unless HTC comes with something really amazing this year. We will see but again this is just prototpe to show initial design and make it work. So be patient guys and don’t judge with one simple fake picture (or not fake). Lots of good things are coming soon!

David, I agree with 100% of what you said.
      Exactly. HTC is so disappointing.

That screen-shot shows jack shit just as the video it came from does. I’d be very surprised if Nokia fucked this one up.

  • Montremoitab

This is why Elop did hide the phone in his hand actually, and especially the bottom of the device.
This is just an unfinished phone, a prototype. Or maybe even the N9 running wp7. No more.
    The phone is NOT FINISHED.
Of course the final device will have the 3 physical buttons.

  • Keven

It’s clearly a FAKE. Check the right corner on the bottom.
The bad photoshop work forgot to reproduce the reflect of the plastic screen protection.
    so badly done.
Nokia is a very serious manufacturer. They would never have done that ;)

It’s not ‘shopped. But it’s not real either. Those “buttons” are printed on a clear plastic screen protector. Look at the air bubbles under the black parts of the screen and you can tell.
