Maybe the next batch will be better — these are the kind of commercials you skip ;)

  • dave_shame

This explains the incredibly underwhelming feature set. You don't have to worry about getting bogged down with your phone because application development on it is so restricted there's no danger of a developer actually creating something useful and engaging. In a land of rich clients that do nothing but charge you money for something you could access for free on the usable browser on an iPhone or Android device you're completely safe from your phone having any meaningful impact on your life. Thank you Microsoft.

  • efjay

Guess you havent seen the great looking, unique applications developers are creating for WP7, nor are aware of the overwhelmingly positive reaction to the tools MS has provided. Then again, its obvious you have since you quote the familiar fanboy mantra of "iphone and android" and are just hating. Will be so much fun watching the haters squirm as WP7 takes off! :D

  • efjay

I think you're right, look at this applications, totally lacking in any menus that resemble the iphone or android, how dare a developer propose something different from the norm? Absolurely unacceptable, such a pity it actually looks LIGHT YEARS ahead of anything on the iphone or android…..

I liked the second one a lot… I can't stand people staring at their phones

  • smoothcrooner

    Hear, hear.

  • GP007

Ya, I like the message here, get a quick look at your info and go on with your life instead of trying to jump around who knows how many apps to get updates on info.

  • Zulu

Tell you what those handsets look terrific.

All I get is "This is a private video. If you have been sent this video plesae make sure you accept the sender's friend request".____What gives?

I think this is the right way to go about it. The concept behind WP7 is totally different than what we are used too. Before you start showing off the phone's features, you have to prepare the average consumer for the shift in thinking and overall concept behind WP7. I try to simplify the concept behind WP7 in three ways:

    1) Stop minding your phones business and start letting your phone mind yours.

    2) Stop working for your phone. Your phone should be working for you.

    3) If you are looking down at your phone then you are not looking forward.

A real smart phone should be a phone that provides you with the information you need with little fuss and with a high degree of functionality, ease and consistency.

    Well played MS.

what are the specs of the HTC Mondrian?

Is it another lower -end HTC device? Another one limited to 8GB ?

  • http://twitter.com/jamiet @jamiet

Ignore, I can see them now. cheers.

  • bch

The first ad is good. It's funny, something we can all relate to in some way (admit it), and the key message is that Windows Phone is different than other smart phones. It's supposed to spark interest and raise awareness in a new platform. It succeeds.

The second ad is not good. It suggests that WP7 is nothing more than a start screen that you "glance" at. If I didn't know better, the ad would make me think that WP7 is a feature phone with blue boxes and no apps. And what's with the Brit accent?

  • smoothcrooner

What's wrong a the Brit accent?

  • bch

Nothing is wrong with the Brit accent. I just wonder, why have one? This is for American market. And there will still be some folks who associate British accent with BP. Not good.

  • bch

Now that I listen again, maybe it's Australian. :-)

The longer one has some scenes filmed in Budapest – my home city. :D

    Cool. Nice city.

"there will still be some folks who associate British accent with BP. Not good. "

This is ridiculous. Also WP7 supposed to lauch first in the EU and before in the US.

  • Jake

    I agree, and I loved #2.

On a side note, I've felt like one of those people far too often.

  • http://twitter.com/pstatho @pstatho

The phone at the beginning of the second video is not the Mondrian, it's too rectangular. Also the start screen that you see is just some overlay, you can see it not moving in sync with the phone. Looks like an early leak to see general feedback.

btw, can't seem to post comments in Chrome.

  • Emily

I like both of the commercials!

  • tombow

I think both ads are pretty good. These are off on the right direction. Since WP7 isn't build and not supposed to be used with the same user interface paradigm as the other platforms before it, the marketing is off on the right tract.

Of course, they'll have to follow up these with constant "rewiring" of people's mentality of what a smart phone is suppose to be, if they hope to gain long term success.

It usually takes people a while to shit their mentality in anything new.

  • Jesse

Haha, that is me! That first video is a classic

  • http://twitter.com/peterpulmonary1 @peterpulmonary1

the message is supposed to be that the phone will let you know if there is something you need to know, instead of making you do the work of checking. eg: if there is a FB update, it would show on the people hub.
i dont think the ad makes this message clear enough. they need to articulate the point that: people can accept that the technology will notify them appropriately, like a personal assistant.
if the message is positive instead of negative i think it would be better.
have some scenarios where the phone delivered important info in situations where people were too busy to be checking their phones all the time.
for instance, during a bike race, the phone will delivery some sort of notification about distance covered or something.
during a wedding where the bride is supposed to be dealing with guests, not checking her phone, the phone notifies her of something important
people need to see that the software can take them to a new level of convenience and service.

    They're launching overseas first, though..?

  • bch

Uh, yeah. But it won't be debuting in Europe on AT&T. This is an AT&T ad, you know.

  • Danny

I can see where you got your name – your post is certainly shame worthy.

  • Guest

I'll be interested to see WP7 in action. I would definitely welcome the chance to have a front page dashboard of things interesting to me.

  • djguapo

I predict an avalanche of Windows Phone 7 ads from networks, hardware makers, and Microsoft. All three of them. Never been done before, not for HypePhone, not for Crapdroid, not for Boycottberry. Think about it. Anyway, can't wait!

  • Barney

The first one was pretty funny when they guy dropped the phone in the urinal

  • http://twitter.com/moonmantweets @moonmantweets

Still the argument that british accent will remind people of BP is nonsense. Microsoft is american, AT&T is american, what difference does it make if the narrator has british accent. The US has all kinds of accents, would mexican or say polish be better? :D

  • cadrethree

The ads are ok. IMHO they should show the most compelling features within the first 5 seconds, which I think are Zune, Pictures, and Xbox support. It's got great looking consumption features, why not show that first?

  • bch

Why have all the Brit-accented BP execs and spokespersons started sounded like Americans lately. Who are the spokespeople for BP on American TV? That's right, Americans. Just check out BP's "Making It Right" campaign.

This is not a personal thing. It's marketing. Appeal to the most while offending the least.

I expect that there will be Spanish-speaking ads for latin television markets in the USA, e.g. California, Florida, and the Southwest. They will have latin, possibly even Mexican, accents. On the other hand, there aren't enough heavily-accented Poles living the USA to warrant the expense for a Polish accent. :-)

  • Danny

Actually I would not be surprised to find that this is an MS ad that carriers can add their logo/voiceover to at the end which would make sense because MS is paying for the marketing out of the gate and it does not look like they are skimping on the price. Plus the get to have a cohesive message – unlike the Pre's terrible launch advertising.

  • Danny

I know! Beautiful AND witty. What were they thinking?

  • bonelyfish

Stupid commercials that don't know it is Microsoft or the Ad agent to blame. Being connected with people but neglected the people physically around? The idea of being connected is just not right.

  • http://twitter.com/rkotike @rkotike

    very funny commercial.
