New”Visual Phone Express” development environment coming?

Besides possibly leaking a new Nokia Windows Phone, Nokia’s developer call to arms may have also leaked a new development environment for Windows Phone.

The video makes reference to “Visual Phone Express”, which, if it is similar to Microsoft’s other Express products, is presumably a simplified and free version of Visual Studio specific to phone development.

At present the full development stack for Windows Phone is free, and we do not of course know if this will remain this way. More interesting would be if Microsoft releases a simplified product which unleashes the inner developer in all of us.

Visual Studio Express edition is already available for free from Microsoft. Actually Microsoft is promoting it as the free dev.tool for Windows Phone platform.

This was the original name of Visual Studio Express for Windows Phone. They considered to name it Visual Phone Express cca two years ago and then changed the name.

But it is highly improbable that the Nokia video is so old.

Something even simpler for everyone would be a great addition to their family of tools. But they must keep the full featured option free as well.

Perhaps they are simply rebranding the Dev Tools. At least I would hope that they still keep Blend as a free Add On for the phone devs. Especially when it comes to animation or the DataBinding definitions Visual Studio alone just doesn’t do.
