No more rumours–Mango coming in 1-2 weeks

In a blog post Microsoft has finally laid all the speculation to rest by announcing that Mango will be delivered soon.

Promising that “every Windows Phone will … receive software” which includes “ painstakingly tuned”  firmware Eric Hautala General Manager, Customer Experience Engineering warned against installing “bootleg updates and homebrew tools“.

Saying the phone update will be rolling out in a week or two, users can watch the progress at Microsoft’s Where’s My Phone Update? page.

Hopefully the speed of the arrival of the roll-out will only be matched by the speed at which it finishes, but we have seem posts by carriers suggesting the process could take as much as 4 weeks to go from start to conclusion.

See the full post after the break.

Hi everybody. Given all the recent speculation around the timing of our Mango update, I wanted to bring you up to speed on what to expect next.

For months, we and dozens of our partner companies have been laying the groundwork for the Windows Phone 7.5 update—and making solid progress. As a result, we now expect to start rolling it out in the next week or two. At that time, we’ll also refresh the Where’s My Phone Update? table to reflect the worldwide rollout status.

This also seems like a good time to caution against installing unofficial or leaked copies of Windows Phone software.

During the official Windows Phone 7.5 update process, every Windows Phone will also receive software from the handset manufacturer. This matched and paired firmware has been painstakingly tuned so your phone—and apps—work with all the new features of Windows Phone 7.5. Since your phone requires the proper firmware to function as designed, my advice is simple: steer clear of bootleg updates and homebrew tools.

By the way, in case you missed it, we recently released new versions of both the Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac and the Zune software for PCs, which you’ll need to update your phone. If you haven’t already, I encourage you to install it. I think you’ll like the update-related improvements, which speed up the overall update process and give you more control over backups. A small favor: When you update to Zune 4.8, you’ll be asked to participate in improving the update process. Please consider doing so.

I know you’re eager to get your hands on the next release of Windows Phone—and everyone involved with Windows Phone is equally excited and eager to deliver it to you. Please hang on—we’re almost there.

Eric Hautala

General Manager, Customer Experience Engineering

Hopefully this will put an end to all the rumours!

    • Jeff Atkinson

Not likely Alex  people will still t alk and moan and groan  as it whatever they say will make  the date closer or their carrier act quicker!

    I’m betting on the 9/30.

All right! If this is anything like the last round of updates, then this means that everyone should be updated by December!

    • http://www.timsmithmma.com Tim Smith

I hope every person that makes this old lame ass comment gets their update as late as possible. A bricked phone would be even better.

      • Anonymous

It probably will happen (bricked phones all) though sadly it won’t just be to the people who make this old lame ass comment.

        • http://www.timsmithmma.com Tim Smith

Then get an android or iphone. Why use something you’re not happy with?

          • Anonymous

I never said I wasn’t happy with the phone. Like everyone else, I was not happy with the last round of updates. I think most WP7 fans will agree to that.

            Relax, Tim!

Yes, people are upset about the last update but it appears MS is doing things a little differently. They have had only one major update so lets just see how things go this time around.

NO at most within 6 weeks  1-2 weeks with a 4 week rollout to completion) which would be around the end of October at most!!!

Hoping that the “Final” Mango bits discussed a while back are actually upgradeable. No big deal to me if they’re not, but it would definitely be nice. Also hoping that AT&T doesn’t hold this up for months again. I get the feeling that MS is coordinating all of the releases as much as possible to get everything released on the same day. I partly get that and somewhat wish they’d just let carriers release as their testing is done instead of holding back those who are ready right now.

    • Jeff Atkinson

ATT has already said they woulkd be among the first to roll out mango  about a montn ago when they announced their mango lineup!  Thye dont want any morefoulups either and if you read between the lines  yes I believe MS has held many carriers feet to the fire and thats why  carriers are making it know that they are ready  or going to be ready.  Maybe a few were noit and thats why the 9/15 dat was pushed nack “a weeke or two”

    Based on the
evidence that is out there, Microsoft is giving us exactly what we asked for
last time. There are reports that the carriers from around the world have
already OK’d the update and are waiting for Microsoft to distribute. All this
points to Microsoft trying to give us an “Apple Like” roll out so
when they announce it everyone will get it at the same time. It seems as if
they are trying to be more transparent about things than Apple meaning that
they still give us information rather than shrouding everything in a veil of
    secrecy.

I’ve been following the news too and very agree with your statement!

“Microsoft trying to give us an “Apple Like” roll out sowhen they announce it everyone will get it at the same time.”

I hope this happens, but I’m not trusting Microsoft after the Nodo fiasco. When Apple release an update, it is available for every iPhone at this very moment, but if you read at the end of this article:

“but we have seem posts by carriers suggesting the process could take as much as 4 weeks to go from start to conclusion.”

Looks like it going to be the same frustrating experience like the first time.  I don’t see why Microsoft can send updates for the WP7 OS and leave carriers to update individually. But I really like the OS and I will Microsoft an opportunity to redeem themselves on this issue. Microsoft, I think your update method is the worse thing that I can’t think of this platform. Get control of the updates like you do on Windows!

      • http://twitter.com/domineus Malcolm Williams

that’s just based on previous experiences not on much fact.
If anything, Microsoft has reiterated that mango will be nothing like nodo. And the fact that ATT has emphasized they will update all devices in a timely manner makes me a bit more positive about that

Try to remember, iPhone has only one model, well 2 or 3 but not from several manufacturers on several mobile carriers. I think they are trying to learn from their mistake the first time around and I for one am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt until I have reason not to.

At least they announced it now get some more phones to sprint would be nice

    • Anonymous

Unfortunately the carriers decide what phones they want so it’s Sprint (And Verizon too) who are being sluggish with new WPs which sucks because I’m on Verizon and really want them to land a newer Mango phone soon.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZVPGBE3RRKK6FH33WPUFOWFJYQ Just Visiting

Not going to happen, fwaits.  Maybe, and that’s a big maybe, in 2012.

I recently spoke with someone at Verizon – they simply aren’t piqued enough about WP.  Verizon (Mr. McAdam) thinks WP has a chance to be Verizon’s third ecosystem, but with only one phone in the line up, doesn’t look too encouraging for WP to have a huge presence, if at all, on Verizon’s network.

If Verizon lost customers due to their lack of variety, namely WP devices, perhaps they would be more compelled to get more WP devices.  Given that their rates/plans are nearly identical to ATT, and given that ATT service is on par with, or better than, Verizon in many areas, doesn’t seem too bad an idea to switch to a different carrier.

Release on the same week of the iPhone 5 ?

Can anyone please explain me the relevance of carriers at all? Why should we care what they think? It’s not like carriers are testing iOS updates, why do they do so with Mango? Carriers should provide the infrastructure to make calls and access the internet, that’s it. My ISP isn’t verifying my Windows 7 updates, why should they verify my WP7 update? I don’t understand this.

    • http://twitter.com/DJMicMayhem DJ Mic Mayhem

Apple is not immune to this they have to go through this process too carriers test iOS updates, the process is slightly easier because Apple also creates the hardware that goes along with the OS. Microsoft on the other hand has the more difficult job of getting multiple companies in different countries with different agenda’s and timetables all on the same page. People don’t understand how difficult the process is, so if they can pull this off in the next few weeks and it is smooth it will be unprecedented.

As for the reason why they are involved they have to make sure the updates work with their networks. In a lab things tend to work perfect but there needs to be real world testing to make sure and this is what they are doing. It is bigger than just using the infrastructure and making calls, phones are more complex than ever before.

      • Anonymous

Why do the carriers have to test the phone? My carrier hasn’t got a clue which phone I use and I doubt they even care. I don’t see why carriers and phone are so interconnected. There a hundreds of phones I can buy that my carrier has never ever tested, and it doesn’t cause a problem at all.

I really don’t get it. Simply saying phones are complex is not convincing me. Phones aren’t complex, they have a modem, a processor, RAM and a mainboard. They’re just like computers.

        • Jeff Atkinson

and firmware  which if its incompatible or has bugs crashes and gives you say the Blue Screen of Death and you  mutter under your breath and it get a workaround until some other situation puts a monkeywrench in the operation just like your freaking desktop Duh!

    • http://twitter.com/KarimChammas Karim Chammas

Actually carriers DO test ios updates. Apple just don’t tell you that. As usual they are always keeping their users in the dark and only tell them what they want to know.

Hats off to MS, this is exactly the roll out we all wanted. I 2 weeks we’ll ALL have Mango goodness. I’m loving NoDo as it is so Mango will surely make me even happier…

      • Anonymous

Still, Apple is easily capable of providing simultaneous updates for 100 million users more than 5 times a year. It’s never a big deal. With Android (and apparently WP7), it’s always a big deal.

        • http://twitter.com/KarimChammas Karim Chammas

That’s hilarous. This is exactly what MS are doing now (releasing it simultaneous). It’s not like MS sends out updates (with no big deal) to their billion something users with Windows/office eh?

          • Anonymous

But it’s taking MS a lot of efforts. Apple pushes out big updates like this for breakfast.

          • http://openid.aol.com/gom99 Geoffrey

It’s because Apple controls both hardware and software and they have a rather small amount of phones to test.

            That’s a positive to Apple’s Strategy.

What’s the negative?  Well if you don’t like the form factor of the iPhone…oh well…

          • Anonymous

I think the strategy is fairly similar. There are strict hardware requirements for Windows phones, and Apple has about 9 devices it has to make iOS work on. Therefore I would expect MS to be able to offer a similar reliable update procedure.

          • Jeff Atkinson

there a bunch of different devices and even the same device on each different network requires different testing and requirements to work correctly in that system  with second generation devices  there will be more devices think Nokia and HTC alone . whereas apple releases one iphone (well this year maybe two the 4s and the 5 ) a year since they dont talk about carrier testing we dont know how long thats maybe its just as long as WP testing  At least with MS theres more transparency.  For some people thats apparentl;y okay  for others  well maybe impatience gets in the way of reason!

      • Anonymous

Still, it’s disappointing that while Apple rolls out an iOS update to EVERY iPhone on EVERY carrier in the world on the SAME DAY, Microsoft issues a gradual rollout over the course of weeks or months.  As a former iPhone user, that’s definitely one thing I miss.  I’d love to be pleasantly surprised with a smooth Mango release.

    • Anonymous

Carriers test all updates including iphone’s. They sell the phones so they try to make sure the updates don’t brick them and the network. They are the ones who have to field the support calls if something goes wrong.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Warren-Cush/1425676469 Warren Cush

from what i read in the article the manufacturers of the phones will provide the update for their phones and not the carriers. correct me if im wrong but thats what i read

  • Anonymous

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Milad-Bazzaz/100000479683479 Milad Bazzaz

carrier testing is stupid but its the way it goes.

Its not like I have to test for compatibility or anything…I can buy a billion phones that are NOT offered by my career and all I need is a freakin SIM card for that thing to work, work perfectly that is.

Carriers should be allowed to decide whether they want to add tethering etc. into their phones…other than that, I’m sure that carriers are too dumb to tweak with the OS anyway.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Airan-Plaster/1719426825 Airan Plaster

Funny thing about people complaining about not having this update already is it is still summer for two more days. They said fall and no, they did not give a hard date, but neither has apple but no one complains about that. It is to drum up some excitement, press, and all around buzz about this update and it is working perfectly. If people were so worried about the update, then why didn’t they install the beta. I did and I for one will not give up on WP anytime soon as long as they keep going the direction they are headed. I think the update process is going to be different and much more organized this time around. MS have to much to lose this time if they don’t get it right.
