NoDo disables HSUPA on the Samsung Focus, here’s how to restore it

speed Included with extra goodies in the AT&T Samsung Focus update is apparently also a setting which deactivates HSUPA, meaning uploads will not be at the maximum possible speed.

Fortunately it is relatively easy to turn it back on again.

The instructions, via WPCentral, is as follows:

From the number-dial screen:
Enter ##634#
Diagnostics screen should open.
Enter *#32489#
Test mode screen should open.
Press back at the bottom (bottom right, not the phone’s back button)
Press 5 for RRC (HSPA) control
Press 1 to view what yours is set at (Kyle’s was Release 5 HSDPA only)
Press 2 to change it.
Press 3 to change to Release 6 HSDPA/HSUPA
Press [end] to confirm.

Stuff like this makes you want to switch providers. I bet Jobs wouldn't allow this on their iPhones.

Well keep in mind the default setting before NoDo was also HSDPA Release 5. So this is normal that NoDo would return it to this setting. I didn't realize this was changed, so I'm thankful for this acticle. I changed my phone to HSUPA Release 6 a long time ago, and had no idea NoDo changed it back to Release 5.

This must be something AT&T did cause I didn't have to change mine (again) to R6 on Rogers (http://goo.gl/TVSSu). But if you're an AT&T customer, this is great info to have! Thanks for sharing!

I just checked mine and it was still at R6 after both updates. Bonus is that with the phone laying down on the table I can actually use the touch screen now instead of having to pick up the phone. Also the sounds now play flawlessly over my Blue Ant speaker phone.

Just want to say, my Focus came from Rogers. I'm in Australia and mine was set @ R5. Now it's set @ R6 thanks for the info… cheers

I just got the update this evening took about 25 mins to do both. WEnt to scouts ame back foun. d this thread and will check to see whether R5 or R6 dont do much downloading ao havent noticed much before. Thanks guys.

Weeks ago I changed from r5 to r6 and it made a negligible difference for me, if any. I switched it back anyway. What's the big deal? It's the way it was configured in the first place and not exactly a user setting. Just change it back and move on.

My girlfriend was R6 and updated to NoDo and she remained at R6 afterwards. So I don't believe NoDo changes this back as this setting is at the firmware level and not OS.
I had to hard reset my phone, so thats why I believe my settings changed.

Tested several times with each setting.
R6: 392 kb/s most of the time.
R5 had a mostly 522 kb/s some times 392 kb/s
This was at low signal strength.

The problem here is that AT&T is still testing R6 for all different types of phones. The "handshake" method used for connecting to the cellular base station is different between HSPA R5 and R6. The last I checked, the only phone they officially support R6 HSDPA/HSUPA on is the iPhone, and they were testing updates to bring HSUPA to the Atrix and Inspire Android phones.

assuming this is true – and there is no reason to believe it's not – it just shows you how fanboys & conspiracy go hand in hand. EVIL AT&T LIMITING USERS is really at&t trying to make a better phone experience for 99.9% of customers with said phone.

I didnt update to NoDo from ATT, I updated a few weeks ago and it didnt change my setting at all , theres nothing att could give you in an update worth anything , the phone firmware is Samsungs, OS Microsoft , do I need anything from ATT,no?

I just updated my samsung focus to nodo. I checked before the update and it was set to Release 5. I changed it to release 6. Then I performed the update. I checked after the update, and was still at Release 6. So the nodo update does *not* set you back to R5. It just seems that some devices come set to R5 while others may come set to R6.
