Nokia: Google/Motorola deal may be “a massive catalyst for the Windows Phone ecosystem” and other reactions

Nokia, a premier Windows Phone OEM which ditched Android for risk involved in differentiation among other OEM’s said the following,

“This further reinforces our belief that opportunities for the growth of Nokia’s smartphone business will be greatest with Windows Phone. This could prove to be a massive catalyst for the Windows Phone ecosystem. Additionally, with our respective intellectual property portfolios, Nokia and Microsoft are working together to build and nurture an innovative ecosystem that benefits consumers, operators, developers and other device manufacturers.”

According to Lee Simpson, an analyst at Jefferies International in London, the linkup may shift some Android phone manufacturers away from Google to consider platforms such as Microsoft Corp.’s Windows Phone, which was adopted by Nokia this year, said

“It might start to put Microsoft into focus as an alternative platform now, which could indirectly benefit Nokia,” Simpson said.

Samsung, Sony Ericsson, LG and HTC just commented the same thing, which I suspect Google sent them.

“We welcome the news of today’s acquisition, which demonstrates that Google is deeply committed to defending Android, its partners, and the entire ecosystem.”

Only HTC went on to define its relationship with Google after this  deal.

“We are supportive of Google’s acquisition of  Motorola Mobility as this is a positive development to the Android ecosystem, which we believe is beneficial to HTC’s promotion of Android phones. The partnership between HTC and Google remains strong and will not be affected by this acquisition.”

    Two questions to ask:

    1. Will Microsoft stop suing MOTO because of this?
    2. Will Apple stop suing HTC because of this?

If no, how can this protect anyone if moto can’t even protect itself.

To answer your questions. I do not think Microsoft will stop it’s lawsuit against Moto due to the IP infringed upon is more software related. On the other hand, it may definitely sop apple because Apple does both the software and hardware. And that Moto’s IP is mainly centered around cellular hardware, I would not be surprised if The counter if they go after Apple or even try to go after Nokia (Which would end up cross licensing due to the fact that Nokia holds more cellelar hardware IP than Moto.

The thing to remember is that Google can now add their patents to the Moto patents in any negotiation – this may shift the math enough to be significant.

      3. Will Apple stop suing Motorola because of this?

And the answer to all three is – no.

WP7 team is not advertising and is out of the news.  Andriod/iPhone are in the news daily.  Good or bad they are in sight and in mind.

Hmm. Seems to be a bad purchase.
How can you justify paying 12 billion for a company that loses hundreds of millions each quarter. Yes they get patents but the patents aren’t worth 12 billion alone. This is going to cost them more than it makes them I believe

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_CWS4JU6FO4PTQXJQMAHKTSOFEU Hmm

Motorola has a lot of cash on hand, so this is really a 9 billion transaction.
Still a lot but not as much as it looked like on paper.

      • http://profiles.google.com/blueandwhite89 Daniel Purdham

at 300+ million loses per year they are going to run out of money pretty quickly if they dont turn things around

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZWIQU6F5MNQWGAIOKNHSCSJFDE Brian

Hundreds of millions? More like $56 million last quarter and forecasting break even this quarter (and they have $3.2 billion in cash, cash equivalents, and cash deposits). And unlike Nokia, whose smartphone business is in free-fall, Motorola is showing 41% year-on year-growth.

Kind of like paying 8 billion for Skype, when the next highest bid was 4 billion……kinda like that, you mean. ;)

Besides, they both have their assets.

“It might start to put Microsoft into focus as an alternative platform now, which could indirectly benefit Nokia,” Simpson said.”

Yes, it might.  However, I think that what this acquisition does, even more so, is it is going to encourage the other oems to look at other alternatives as well; to hedge their bets, so to speak.  Microsoft charges a license for WP7; does Meego?  Meego is on the ground floor at this point, and if the N9 takes off, more eyes are going to be on it.  And it is a ‘free’ OS, to my understanding, so HTC, for example, could be thinking ‘why pay $15 to produce a WP device, when we could just skin Meego with Sense and call it a day?”

Not saying that the other alternatives will be adopted immediately, but it would be foolish for the other oems to not consider alternate or multiple income streams.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZWIQU6F5MNQWGAIOKNHSCSJFDE Brian

There already is some hedging going on, with many of the Android OEMs offering WP7 handsets. In the end, most of their effort will stay where most of the money is – and that looks like it will be Android for some time to come.

Everybody at Nokia that was against Elop when he did a deal with Microsoft instead of embracing Android must be wearing a bag covering their faces. Had Nokia found themselves marrying Android when this happened, it would be very bad news. Now they see the backstabbing nature of Google, who backstabbed former partner Apple and now most their OEMs. Nokia can truly differentiate themselves with their great hardware and WP7 Mango and they will enter the market with a fully featured product that is highly refined and with a pool of apps and games and cloud services both both personal and corporate.

No…anyone against Elop is still finding many, many, many reasons to blame the guy. Some plan by the Evil MS and Elop apparently to ruin Nokia and make it a viable acquisition target. Since nothing of the current plan is coming to fruition (and probably won’t make significant advances until mid 2012 – I doubt what the first gen NWP can attain) all anti-Elop folk just see is more Nokia destruction.

Not my personal opinion, just the thoughts circulating amongst the strong willed Nokia/Symbian/MeeGo fans.

This is all about patents, and the patent wars. I’m not sure where this all started, maybe with RIM abck about 10 years ago. I don’t think many want to be in this war but they are all drawn into it now so they have to play the game. I truly think that the other Android OEMs will see this in a positive light. With all the litigation going on, with Google now owning Moto’s patents, they will be a bit safer under the umbrella.

To look at this as a positive thing for WP because the OEMs will look elsewhere, holds no water. If that were the case they would have reacted negatively to the Microsoft/Nokia deal. I think it is a mistake to hold your breath waiting for the OEMs to embrace WP more because of it.

Well said. It had been looking like Android was going to possibly stumble – and that would have been an opportunity for Microsoft. This deal makes the idea of an Android stumble seem less likely.
