Nokia confirms ‘first products based on windows this quarter’

imagePreviously we heard talk about increasing confidence, but some milestone must have been crossed, as Nokia CEO Stephen Elop has now confirmed that we will see the “first  products based on windows this quarter”.

Note that Elop is refering to the products in the plural, confirming also that we will see more than one handset.  At present 3 are being rumoured, including the Nokia Searay, Nokia Sabre and Nokia Ace. The devices are largely expected to be announced at Nokia World on the 26th October.

Stephen Elop continued to emphasize that it was a battle of ecosystems, saying “there is a clear opportunity for alternative ecosystem to Apple, Google” and anticipated “platform battle extending to tablets, tv sets”.

It seems that Nokia Windows 8 tablet is a near certainty then.

Here’s hopping that the Nokia Ace makes it’s way to T-Mobile.

Just to clarify for people. On Brandon Watsons interview with Windows Weekely recently, he all but confirmed that Nokia Windows Phones will be unveiled at Nokia World.

Folks, it really is recommended that you read the source of this story.  The only thing that Stephen Elop stated was that the first Windows Phone products would be ‘introduced’ in this quarter, which is nothing new given that Nokia World 2011 is only a few weeks away.  The operative word being ‘introduced’, per the article.

And if you’ve been following direct quotes from Nokia personnel, then you know that the first Windows Phone will be released in 6 European countries only; there are absolutely no direct quotes from Nokia or Microsoft that the U.S. will see any Nokia WP devices in 2011.

With that said, we may see more than one WP device revealed at Nokia World, but unless Nokia announces a completely different launch strategy and adds the U.S. for 2011, in addition to the U.S. carriers updating their roadmaps (not a single U.S. carrier has a Nokia device listed on their roadmap for Q4 2011), we in the U.S. will have to continue to exercise patience.

      Very valid points.

I must say, though, I am very excited to see what Nokia will present. They know more than anyone, that they HAVE to bring it, if they want to survive.

I predict that we will see a mass roll-out in the US in Q1-2012, while a few select countries in Europe will enjoy SeaRay and perhaps Ace in Q4-2011.

Regardless what Nokia brings out first, I have a feeling the best will come with the next major wave of phones.  You can see that MS is giving HTC and Samsung the early shine so they can establish themselves and snatch up whatever sales they can get.  Once that is over, you will then see a wave of new U.S. bound Nokia phones that should get heads turning even more than the previous Mango models released this year.

For me, the bottom line is if the phone can get the job done.  Right now the Arrive is doing the job quite well so I could see me upgrading to a Samsung or HTC with a bigger screen with ease and not sweat what Nokia is bringing out.

You’re probably right. I’m more than happy with my Omnia 7, so I’m not looking to upgrade, just for the sake of it.

But if Nokia can bring me something like the ones showed in the picture above, I could be tempted.. Depending on the price ofc. The N9 is very expensive in DK unfortunately :(

I think Elop will have an unannounced surprise at Nokia World. One of Elop’s complaints about Nokia’s business practices was announcing devices too early and delivering late. So, we’ll see.

I’m excited for a windows phone that not only has great build quality (HTC and Nokia, not really Samsung yet) but ALSO has a great AMOLED display (not HTC, but samsung). To have both of these, along with the superb camera quality of Nokia phones would be wonderful. Really people just need to be shown what these phones are really capable of. Anybody I talk to is really quite impressed by the fluidity and quickness, as well as the functionality (especially with Mango). We’ll see soon enough…

Dude… My Omnia7 blows my colleagues HTCs away when it comes to build quality.

if the Nokia Ace doesn’t make to T-Mobile, then that’s it! I’m moving to AT&T. I’m tired of T-Mobile sitting on their laurels…

They better come out this quarter. When a company’s primary purpose is to produce and sell phones, you expect them to be a tad quicker than this.

There’s not a whole lot of science behind making a phone. The hardest part is building the OS, and Microsoft already took care of that part. They just need the hardware, which is a matter of sourcing them and assembling them.
