Nokia Drive App XAP For Other OEM Windows Phone Devices

It was not so long ago we saw Nokia Music and Nokia Map app XAP’s were leaked to the internet which worked on various Windows Phone OEM devices like HTC, Samsung, etc. Now people from famous Chinese Windows Phone site/forums have ported the crown jewel of Nokia Windows Phone devices, Nokia Drive app. Nokia Drive app allows offline voice guided navigation in various countries around the  world. Currently the XAP was tested on HTC and Samsung Windows Phone devices. Once you install the app, it will ask you to select the map region to be downloaded along with the voice you need, for example, the whole US map is about 1.7GB.  Nokia should be more careful and add extra protection to their exclusive apps. Its pathetic too see all their apps on other Windows Phone devices.

Unfortunately we can’t post the link to XAP here, so  you may find at your own risk.

Thanks to gaille.joo for the tip.

I disagree. I think that Nokia should make their Drive app available to all WP devices. People will still buy Nokia WP because of superior quality build. I would.

Well, Samsung has private apps as well, and so does HTC. Just because Nokia adds something awesome, should it be allowed to get pirated? I don’t think so… they put hard work in making that app, let them get the money for it by buying their phones.

Its always one rule for htc/samsung and another for everyone else.

          What do you mean?

I think he is referring to the hypocrisy of some HTC/Samsung owners.

            I see :)

      • http://www.facebook.com/miguelsantos1985 Miguel Santos

They could sell it to other phones and give it free to Nokia ones…

        • Anonymous

          Agree!

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UWVRPJYQFEG7ZCHPD7LDPBR2CM LWSJR

        ^^Exactly this!

I haven’t heard people bitching about HTC not making their apps available to Samsung; haven’t heard people bitching about LG not making their apps available to HTC or Samsung; haven’t heard about anyone not pirating HTC, Samsung, or LG apps and making them available across the board either.

        • Anonymous

You haven’t heard anybody because both Samsung’s and HTC’s apps are simply horrible. Who would want those apps? Really?

    • Anonymous

I agree. It should remain free for Nokia phone owners, but everyone else can pay up.

      • http://www.facebook.com/miguelsantos1985 Miguel Santos

        I agree… And I woukd pay…

Nokia has already given Microsoft right to use it’s Navteq maps, that was a 8.1 billion investment 4 years ago, Nokia has been estimated to use another 3.2 billion at these years to develop it further.

Imo it’s more than right to Nokia to at least have right for offline amps and voice guided navigation on it’s exclusive drive app. Global Maps are part of the very core of Nokia.

Nokia really needs to come up with more secure way to protect it’s assets. Nokia has tried to not use any logging needed, but it seems like it might be a must.

      • Todd Ostermeier

The map/nav sharing agreement between Nokia and Microsoft resulted in the craptastic “tap for directions” implementation of driving directions in the stock map app.  That is not a valid replacement for true turn-by-turn navigation.  If we were only talking about offline maps, that’d be a different story.

Apparrently, you haven’t been keeping up…Nokia stated that they would make apps available to non Nokia devices; but non Nokia device owners would be quite unrealistic to think that Nokia would offer said apps for free.  And non Nokia device owners who want Nokia apps should pay for the app, not pirate/steal it!

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Carl-Joseph-Bialorucki/100000282531173 Carl Joseph Bialorucki

But how can you pay for it? If you buy a new device, you can only use it on that. I would gladly pay for it if it was in the marketplace.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UWVRPJYQFEG7ZCHPD7LDPBR2CM LWSJR

Nokia has already stated that they will make their apps available for non Nokia devices.  Currently, there is only one, but the others will come.

Well pradeep, talking about it is also not really effective and makes sure people will look for it.

    • http://twitter.com/efjay01 Ef Jay

Exactly, telling people about it in a nice, big headline AND with video then being hypocritical and saying they wont post a link. Sorry, cant hide the fact that this is promoting piracy. Just dont start crying when Nokia doesnt invite you to any of their future events.

Does anyone know what website i can find the xap?

Finally some action on this platform. Piracy has sold hardware since the dawn of time. Deal with it.

If you think it’s pathetic, why would you even want to post the link!  You should be proud not to post it.

What I’m wondering, for non-nokia devices you have navigon in my eyes a very good navigation solution for other devices, is there any advantage in Nokia Drive compared with Navigon (I know you have to pay for Navigon and you get Nokia Drive for free)?

    • Anonymous

What I don’t understand is, why these fools are pirating Nokia apps?  Are people that jealous of Nokia providing this great service to their customers?  If so, they should blame HTC and Samsung for not offering anything with the caliber of value that Nokia does.

And I don’t recall these fools pirating the Navigon app.

    Edit/Delete post.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/CW3SETFCKRB5NRLX5QZK3EMRWY Joe

I dont think its right  to pirate it like that  but Nokia should encrypt  it better  but I do think it should be a paid app  on the marketplace available for download for a reasonable fee.  Nokia could recoup their costs.  It would probably be a really big seller!  I would be willing to pay a reasonable fee for a reaally good nav program.

hacking is a a poor term here. This is theft pure and simple, someone should be sued. I would happily pay Nokia of this app to run in my Titan (assuming they have maps for NZ)
but theft should not be promoted indirectly  like this.

  • http://twitter.com/mayfly007 Alex A

Support the developers. If you like it buy it.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UWVRPJYQFEG7ZCHPD7LDPBR2CM LWSJR

      You mean Nokia, right?

  • Anonymous

To everyone who says this is stealing (or whatever other term is thrown around). The Nokia apps have been announced to be coming to all Windows Phones. Currently, they are exclusive to the Nokia devices, but, they are not planned to be for long and once they are released they will be free.

Sure, using the .xap to get it early is on the same level as getting the early RTM builds of Mango that were out there before the actual release. It’s not what the developer wants, but, it’s not on the same level as getting access to a paid app for free.

Plus, you can be certain that if Nokia and Microsoft want those files pulled from whatever sites they’re being shared on right now, they will be removed. It has happened before.
