Nokia Drive XAP pirated, made to run on other Windows Phones

AdgMYa6CMAEKy9y.jpg-large

Nokia Drive, Nokia’s turn by turn GPS navigation solution for their Windows Phone 7.5 handsets is one of their crown jewels, and being exclusive to the system it is expected to sell their phones over their Windows Phone 7 competitors.

Now it appears pirate sites have managed to get their hands on the software and installed it on other Windows Phones.  With device unlocking now becoming much more available to thousands of people due to ChevronWP7, it is likely pirating software will become much more mainstream also, possibly negating differentiating via extra software, like Nokia has been.

Has Windows Phone 7 now lost its innocence? Let us know below.

Thanks Max for the tip.

I just wish we could get rid of that cap on Sideloaded apps. I have a ton of personal apps I developed and sideloaded that I never intend to sell on the marketplace. But because of the limit I can only use some of them… : (

    • http://twitter.com/Arbeitsheld_ Arbeitsheld

I believe that there is a xap file which removes the sideload limit.
      Just google for it.

    • http://fandroids.tumblr.com chadaddy

There are plenty of ways to get rid of that limit.

Maybe they’ll take the hint and just open up the apps for everyone.  Or Microsoft could easily license their service and integrate it with their already existing Maps.

that would be a win win for everybody

Except for people that make software for a living. Or people the value creativity and believe that creative people’s contributions are worth paying for. Pirates are thieves. Do you have a job? Do you get paid? Why? Why shouldn’t whatever service you provide be “free”? Why should we have to pay for anything. Idiot.

      • Anonymous

if you Mr. “dev”lpr can’t figure out how to make an unpiratable application, then sir, you are the idiot.

and just fyi, I do have a job, I work for a major computer mfg out of which anybody can simply log online for free and place their purchase…  again, for FREE.  Still I get paid tons of money because of what I do.

Please don’t try to be smart reading between the lines, because you’re just making an @$$ out of your self.  I simply said, “if people pirate this Nokia exclusive app, perhaps Microsoft will realize the value behind it, license the app, and include it in their existing service”

But I guess that’s too hard for you to understand…

pure communism vs capitalism, friend. It’s a difference in ideology. Morality becomes relative. He doesn’t care, you do. Neither of you are wrong.

As Nokia already mentioned in the past. All Nokia exclusives will eventually come to all Windows Phones ;) Still it’s always nice to have it earlier

      • Anonymous

I’m pretty sure the drive app is supposed to stay as a nokia exclusive

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nima-Chalebyani/512802155 Nima Chalebyani

That’s totally unlogical. Android has free quality navigation software, iPhone is going to get it too, it would be stupid if Nokia Drive would stay as an Nokia Exclussive. Also Bing Maps is suposed to compete with Google Maps, so if Nokia won’t then Microsoft will make a quality guided navigation app. It just needs time that’s all.

They just simply telling us, developers: “Do not sell software – it will be pirated. Sell services! Shhhh….”

if anyone know a link to the xap, i’ll buy the Chevron unlock token asap. I wonder how this make Nokia / MS feel.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F7TOLHY6F4HW6ZYT6CECLWU2QY Stu Beef

It doesn’t make them feel anything. They’re not stupid. They know perfectly well, just as most of us do, that this was going to happen and that it was just a matter of when. The majority of users will never have it on their phones, becasue the majority of users will never have their phones unlocked. It’s really no big deal when it comes to the big picture for MSFT or Nokia.

      • http://twitter.com/WP7_HUB windowsphone-hub.com

Totally right Stu Beef ! The majority of users will never have it on their phones, becasue the majority of users will never have their phones unlocked. But we can change that and show at all what WP can do.

I think they do it because users like us want to get all apps ! They always do this kind of thing…

ChevronWP7 allows u to run unsigned apps only, like devs do. A few of apps can be run with chevron like screen capturer :)

Probably puts smiles on developers faces, not to mention the envious WP HTC/Samsung owners who wouldn’t normally get this service for free, but frankly I find these pirating actions ’unsavory’.  Pirate the Navigon app? No.  Pirate X-Box Live games? No.  Pirate any apps that are quite expensive?  No.

So why this app?  Why pirate at all?  Rhetorical questions, I know, but still this behavior is unsavory, to say the least.

Google pirated Android out of every single license holder :)

    • http://twitter.com/SirCatalyst Justin Vincible

This isn’t the only XAP that’s been pirated. Practically all pay for apps and xbox live games have been pirated. They’re not hard to find at all.

  • Anonymous

Wait a minute here, does ChevronWP7 allow you to install pirated apps? I thought it didn’t? Or did I misunderstand the author? Chevron only allows legit programs right? (which is what makes it so completely useless)

But generally, this was the first thought the entered my mind as Nokia launched their “drive” app and it was revealed to be exclusive – piracy. Is anyone really surprised?

    • Anonymous

ChevronWP7 only allows you to side-load unsigned applications, just like developers can. It’s far from useless if you are a hobbyist developer and want to test your apps with your phone without having a developer account.

  • http://twitter.com/counterblow the person

really lame.  i hope the pirates feel real proud of themselves…

    • http://munch11.myopenid.com/ 2in1

      They ARE indeed!

    so…where is the XAP?

Surur, if you ever need a hand with designing the site, I may be able to help.

I appreciate the new look. Fonts still have a washed out appearance but moving in the right direction Surur.

  • markiz

    Download link? :D

  • rsgx

Well, MS did encourage Chevron, did they not?

    This is/was inevitable.

Forgive me, but I don’t quite understand the “mainstream” reference as it relates to theft.  Do you view theft the same as Google does?  Nobody is watching so just take it and if they complain, use the sue vs innovation excuse?

  • http://munch11.myopenid.com/ 2in1

If WP7 really allow me to install pirated apps, I may go back to my Omnia 7 again. LOL!

  • Anonymous

    Stop supporting theft.

  • Mikko Kunnari

This is not a problem at all. 99,9% cannot use pirated software in WPs anyway.

you guys would be awsome if you’d made a hack to run WP7.5 on a Nokia N8!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=533945604 Tim Harris

They may have pirated the app, but the screenshot looks like they haven’t figured out how to get the app to talk to the hardware correctly yet.

Where’s this “MAX” who supplied the tip? Speak up Max!! We want the XAP!!!!

  • black jack

I would gladly buy Navigon or any other offline GPS solution to use on my LG phone.
However, MICROSOFT DOESN’T LET ME BUY!
They sell their Windows Phones in my country through Vodafone and Orange for a year now, but we have no Marketplace or Zune…

I haven’t done it, but tell me, is it condemnable to load unofficial XAPs under these circumstances?

is it just me or the comments on this blog is black on black? somebody fix it. i’m using ie9 and checked on google chrome but same black background.

There is a new encryption that will be working very soon and will put more hurdles to this. Also, the application won’t update as the original Nokias would.
