Nokia Lumia 800 release doubled Windows Phone installed base in the Netherlands

While Nokia’s transition to Windows Phone 7 may not have had a massive influence yet on Nokia’s fortunes, they have certainly moved the needle for Windows Phone 7.

We have seen numerous reports of the Nokia Lumia 800 selling very well in the Netherlands, and data from Statcounter, which reflects but does not directly measure installed base, shows a massive boost in the number of active Windows Phones in the European country.

Prior to the release of the Nokia Lumia 800 market share in the Netherlands was basically flat, but took off pretty strongly with the release of the handset in week 46 of 2011.

Similar data from UK shows a similar Lumia 800-related bump, boosting the installed base by around 33%.  It is however less easy to discern as Windows Phone 7 installed base has actually slowly been growing there.

Of course in terms of market share we are still talking about a fraction of percent, but growth in the installed base may actually be pretty dramatic, which means many more users buying apps, which can only help the ecosystem.

    I hope to see sales numbers from them sometime soon, just to see which reports are actually accurate and which aren’t.

      Out of curiosity, which stats do you want to be true? Are you pro WP7 or anti WP7?

        Pro, definitely.

        But realistically I’m not expecting much.

        This year should be a lot better though, I hope.

      Actually both could be true – the starting point in this is so low (0.3%) that sales could have been pretty weak and still moved the needle.

        I dont have much proof for this, but I suspect between 500,00 and 1 million windows phones are present in UK, and a 1/3 increase in the installed base would mean 150,00 to 300,000 windows phones were sold in the last 6 weeks of 2011.

    I was going to stick with my Omnia 7 until Apollo, but Nokia made it irrestitible for me to upgrade. I got myself an early Xmas gift. Aaaahhh, damn you Nokia!

    Noting that many countries don’t even have any Nokia WP7 devices and the old WP7 devices were version 1 with almost no support from the sales channels and the hardware manufacturers I don’t expect anything to take off until Q2/3.l Now that Samsung and HTC are releasing some nice phones also this should help. This is the year where they will either make a difference or not. I think most people expect by the end of the year they will be the number three mobile operating system in the market. Let’s hope they break into double percentage point market share by then as it is nice to give the consumers choice and the approach is refreshing and produces quite a nice way to use these mobile computers.
