Nokia Lumia 900 eschews PenTile, has regular RGB subpixel arrangement instead

A bit of good news about the Nokia Lumia 900 that was somehow lost in all of the frenzy after its initial introduction: It comes with a regular RGB subpixel arrangement instead of the PenTile matrix that’s used on the Lumia 800, as now confirmed by a tweet from Nokia.

While many people can’t tell the difference, displays using the PenTile matrix effectively half the number of red and blue subpixels, resulting in a slightly less crisp image compared to traditional RGB arrangements. Whereas this was acceptable with the smaller 3.7″ display on the Lumia 800, the bigger 4.3″ screen on the Lumia 900 would have further amplified the issue.

For an in-depth look at the PenTile matrix, we’d recommed you to read this excellent Ars Technica article that describes it on the Nexus One.
