Nokia Maps For Web Gets An Update, Mobile Maps Update Imminent ?(Updated)

Nokia today announced several updates to its Nokia Maps For web. Their impressive 3D version of maps is going plugin free, and they are testing the webGL version. You can try it out here(Google Chrome Only). Along with that they are launching editorial pages for more than 50 cities around the world including London, New York City, Melbourne, etc where you can get the latest weather forecasts and Lonely Planet suggestions, etc. Following are the some other features added to Nokia Maps,

And to make you feel more like a local anywhere, we increased the coverage of heat maps to 56 cities. However, that’s not all. We have one more feature we would like to highlight: public transport.

Now, in more than 420 cities you can plan your journey from A to B also with underground, light rail and similar options. In more than 30 of those cities you also get timetable information to know exactly when you have to leave home

I expect Nokia Maps 3D on Nokia Windows Phones tomorrow working similar to web version but on gesture controls. This service is now based on SVG which will be more suitable for mobile scenarios as Google did for their 3D version of Google Maps for Android devices. As Stephen Elop said previously, Navigation will be a key differentiator for Nokia Windows Phones among other smartphones.

This is one piece of technology that MS should invest in for Bing! I think they should do a massive world wide campaign (roughly $2-3 Bn) to get Nokia 3D maps for the world, Integrate it with street slide and get it on Mobile. It would be a great exclusive that would propel their solution past what Google’s 3D maps and Google Earth have to offer.

The whole Nokia maps solution is faster then the Google solution! And than I am only speaking about the online not even on the local solution as the WP will get tomorrow

Thing is, this is also a key differentiator for Nokia v. other phone manufacturers (WP and non-WP ones). Making it a WP-asset, they would lose this advantage. Then again, they’re dependent on the success of WP as a whole, so yeah… i think they should license it out too. MSFT sure as hell needs it.

This might be speculating – but I’m wondering if they delibarately chose not to mention WP on that HTML5 site, since they are announcing a built-in solution tomorrow at Nokia World?
