Nokia planning a Windows Phone 7 tablet?

On A-Plus, a Finnish TV program, Stephen Elop, CEO of Nokia said they were working very hard “on something that would be differentiating”, noting they wanted to be more than the 201st tablet out there.

"There are now over 200 tablets in the marketplace and only one of them is doing really well,"

His comment about making a differentiated tablet echoes Microsoft’s UK managing director Ashley Highfield statement that Microsoft "… won’t do anything in the tablet market unless we can be distinctive".

Stephen Elop would however not be tied down about which OS they would be using, saying Nokia was considering strategic options for producing tablets, including using Windows Phone 7 or "other software assets that we have".

While Stephen mentioned Windows Phone 7 in passing, it is much more likely if Nokia does make a Microsoft tablet it would run Windows 8, which is rapidly evolving into an interesting tablet OS.

Back to Windows Phone 7 Stephen said it was possible the first Nokia Windows Phone would come in Q4 2011, but that it will only be announce close to launch to avoid delays and disappointment.

Nope…. I prefer Windows 8 instead…. Don't want to see a phone OS being "enlarged" to be on a tablet, just like iOS / Android. On the other hand, Honeycomb is really cool.

I think a modified version of Windows Phone 7 OS on the tablet would be highly successful. When was the last successful version of a Windows desktop OS? Granted, I'm an iPad dude, but I love Windows Phone 7 too.
