Nokia WP7 products not coming until 2012? Really?

Adding to the current confusion as to when WP7 devices from Nokia will begin to hit the market, Reuters has it that Nokia board chairman Jorma Ollila claimed WP7 devices would be released “from 2012.”

This appears to directly contradict what CEO Stephen Elop has said regarding Nokia aiming to have WP7 devices out this year.

This is apparently second-hand from an interview on Finnish TV, and is hopefully just a result of crossed wires and mistranslation; 2012 sounds worryingly late for a first Nokia/WP7 showing.

I'll put money on it that Nokia will have a phone ready to go when the WP7 "Mango" update is released Q3/early Q4 2011.

    • syrinx

The soonest I can see one available to the public is November 2011.

  • http://www.facebook.com/chuckwhit Chuck Whitaker

To be honest how often does a company really make there predicted release date, especially with tech. 2012 is gonna be the most likely scenario because i can see Mango being push back which is gonna hinder Nokia's handsets releases. Now i don't want this to happen but i mean its hard to be optimistic when dealing with NoDo taking almost the whole entire Q1 to deliver the first update…. Please Microsoft, prove me wrong!

  • http://www.ztitch.com Ztitch Developer

They have the resources. They have the manpower. What they don't have is time.

They need to get it done by the end of Q3 2011 or face yet another year of massive marketshare loss.

  • Wayne

Agree… Time is not their ally…. Look at its rival phones. All of them are having dual cores, bigger screens, and more ram…. But no h/w news for WP7 except its rumored updates.

And with that being said, I wonder how will the first NK-WP7 phone be like…. I do not bear high hopes for that at all.

    • Jessie

Honestly dual cores mean nothing when your OS sucks wind and needs a dual core to keep up to speed.

  • http://twitter.com/EJ1024 @EJ1024

All talk about nokia,,, give us the update, then think about nokia phones.damn why is this talking tool long

    • dan

Agree, we all know that the Nokia deal will take a while, but what is taking so damn long to get the first update out.

    • Wayne

      Agree… Patience is running out….

Should Apple release its IP5 anytime this mid-year…. bye bye MS. Lots of them will be signing contract for that and you lost your consumer base share again…..

  • reviewdevs

I don't see why the first update is taking so long as it should have been released long ago. Someone even said that because of the delay of this update, the next update has been pushed back which actually is close to being finished. 2012 seems like a realistic time but it is sort of scary to hear. If they do release in 2012, I hope Nokia and Microsoft will be teaming up with NVIDIA for that Quad core processor they have ready for the end of the year, with support for 4G and have a 12 MP camera with the Carl Zeiss lenses they use on the N8. Microsoft and Nokia will have to bring something compelling to the market. Sony Ericsson has already been rumored to have a pretty cool looking WP7 in the pipeline already with a 8MP camera and a 1.2GHz processor.

  • Joel

I almost bought a Samsung Focus yesterday….but I decided to wait it out until the end of the year when new devices come out (hopefully)….I really hope this is not true…..Microsoft is trying really really hard to make sure Windows Phone 7 is not successful…..I am starting to feel that they released it prematurely….Maybe they should of waited another year and gotten everything in order with more dev time…..It's been on disappointment after another from them as of late.

    • kevin

If you would consider all the news that came out of MWC 'one disappointment after another' then I suggest you move on and buy something else.

I own a Focus and I think its a great device that I enjoy every day. It sounds like a more mature product would suit you better. Good luck!

  • Bob

Nokia knows they are running on borrowed time, and I'll bet they will have something in 2011.
In interview, Elop mentioned that "…a lot of work has already gone on" between MS and Nokia including first designs. Elop said he'll know in couple months whether they can release devices in 2011. This is obviously a priority for him.
Elop said Nokia had habit of announcing products "some long period of time in advance" which he no longer wants to do.

  • FeankyG

Late update? Taking sooooo long? You know the phone has been out in US for just 3.5 months right? All this doom and gloom is retarded. Get a life or better yet, get another phone. I love my WP7 and I'm sticking with it. All you idiots sit here all day long speculating about shit you haven't a clue about. Let the big boys handle the work.

    • WP7Suck

Ya right…. You can carry on waiting and we will all jump to a better and stronger platform… You can spend your own sweet time waiting and dreaming hoping that MS and Nokia will present your dream phone in the near future, while we are all zooming on the internet with the dual cores.

      • dodohead

2 cores is better 1…… wait.. there is a quad core…. but then next year will be penta cores….. wait is that a 12 mp cam????? but why is my phone still lagging???????

        • WP7Suck

IS still lagging because it is running a crippled WP7 OS. Change it to other OS like Android / iOS, and you will see much better improvement…

Btw, do you not realise that all the 3rd party apps are freaking laggy on WP7? Check out the Facebook app by MS and foursquare for a start….

          • Jonny

I think youll find that he was commenting on android lagging, seriously use a WP7 phone for a few days and then go back to android and see how frustrating it is. My HD7 has gone away for repair :( and I am using a Desire HD rom on my HD2 at the moment and I want to throw the damn thing at the wall, the only thing thats quick and smooth is the home screen and operating system menus, everything else just feels tired and laggy

      • http://www.facebook.com/jessiethe3rd Jessie Anderson

Honestly this isn't the PC market here. Throwing more horsepower at devices that have a sloppy experience to start with isn't going to get anywhere. Go troll away somewhere else man… no body really cares. If you want to use your Android device go ahead. By the way – who the hell needs a Facebook app when it's already integrated into the OS. I bet you I can find out what's posted on my wall, what my friends are doing, and see latest pictures posted on Facebook faster on WP7 than iOS or Android.

        By the way….

How's that gaming ecosystem going over there? Figured out how to combat Xbox Live yet?
How's your battery life with your dualcore? Lasting all day with "multitasking" and "flash use?"
How are those updates going? Everyone on the same boat? Can everyone play or is it "be what thy carrier and OEM supplier say you are" aka F.R.A.G.M.E.N.T.A.T.I.O.N.
I hear the OEMs are feeling the pinch on legal issues – supposedly Android mistook "open source" as "take Java's source" and Google isn't providing any protection…
Speaking of Java… how's those Java Exceptions going?
I hear you are relegated to community support since Google and their OEMs won't support you should you root your device to update… getting much work / play on your phone or you spending countless hours fiddling around with system files?
How's the OS oversight going? Oh that's right – there isn't any OS oversight.
How's that clunky browsing going? Scrolling looking choppy still?
How's getting apps out of Market? Heard there's so many craptastic apps that people just give up going there to get them… enough spam and trash in there for ya?

someone works at microsoft and has a thin skin.

    er..who to listen to?
CEO or Board Chair that has done anything and everything to say they are upset with this merger? Hm…lemme think whose more reliable…

It isn't really about doom and gloom. there are a few problems we see . One of the biggest and for my money the worst of all problems and it's not anything to do with the phone OS. it has everything to do with market place. it's broken. I don't know how many time I have had to reboot my device because of it.
it's a major problem that MS knows about. they should not be waiting for the first update to correct it. it should be corrected right out. some people are putting time and effort into making apps many ,many people are trying to buy these apps only to get bombed out. so yes MS should have corrected this major issue without having to wait for the first update,

For nokia there time is short. much like WP7 they are trying to come from behind. so for them to really be viable they need to get a really good well designed out on the market as soon as they can rather than waiting. they have the resources the brain power . they have it all right there. for this reason I think that we will see at lest one Nokia device before 2012 if they really wanted to they could have one out by the summer. the mobile world is moving very fast. while MS and now Nokia keep saying soon. android and ios are saying now. so yes I think they see this and will act on it.

  • frank

A bug is only fixed immediately if it is a security issue or a deployment blocker. The marketplace issue sucks, but it does have a workaround. Being a mobile device with many hoops to jump through, non-critical bug fixes must be dealt with carefully. You all bitched and moaned that they didn't give you a date. You now have a date, yet you find another reason to complain. I assure you Microsoft isn't doing anything that you all describe (abandoning, sitting on their ass, etc). They are busting their asses to get work done the right way. You say Android and iOS are doing everything now, but I recall not having MMS for TWO YEARS on my iPhone. You say "that was years ago and this is now", and I say, you are right. But you can't dream up hardware, software, and magical unicorns where they don't exist. It's called engineering and it takes time. I work very closely with all of it and I understand and respect the process. Who are you as a consumer to start demanding outrageous shit? Maybe I should call up Ford and Chevy and bitch because I haven't received my personal hovercraft yet. Quad-core on a phone? Give me a break! My 1GHz Focus SMOKES my iPhone.

    • Habiscero

Finally the voice of reason. Way too many chicken littles on this site.

    • WP7Suck

"My 1GHz Focus SMOKES my iPhone"

You have been smoking too much dude?

      • rick

hey man get a life and stop bashing wp7, doing so isn't going to change anything

      • http://www.facebook.com/jessiethe3rd Jessie Anderson

You obviously have come on this site to troll – you are an idiot.

    • Roblo

Hmmm, well I Stuck around for a loooooong time..and ever since I bought the iPhone, my Focus has been on my dresser collecting dust. I was so anti-iphone I didnt even pick up my brothers and our countless hours of arguments. But sorry i-phone 4 smokes the Focus right now. Don't get me wrong WP7 is an awesome OS but not quite there yet, and sorry, what I use to love about windows mobile was customization, I flashed my WP every week, but WP7 doesnt have a lick of it. But here I am still holding on to my Focus in hopes of getting an update, but I guess its going to sit on my dresser for a little bit longer. Here is a list of my past windows phone..

      Audiovox PPC-6600 = Good
      Samsung SCH I730 = Revolutionary
HTC Tilt = Blue-tooth pan , started flashing
HTC Fuze = Phone was fun to have, had a different rom every week
HTC Touch HD = WOW, when iPhones came around all I had to do was turn on the front facing camera.
HTC Tilt 2 = nice, flashed roms..but OS is showing its age
      Samsung Captivate = Short lived
Samsung Focus = Does not smoke the iPhone 4

      • grrrrr

You go on about customization and yet u have an iPhone. Flash that every week! How does it smoke the focus? People are whinging about hardware that isn't out yet (quad core) and updates that are 'late'. NO UPDATE IS FREAKING LATE, A DATE (MARCH) WAS ONLY JUST ANNOUNCED!!! Its only 3.5 months since release ffs.

        • Roblo

Your kidding me right, you ever heard about Jailbreak? My IPhone 4 is customized to my liking, and not bored with it at all. All you people, like myself has been loyal to MS and this is what they give us, a unfinished product. Them being in the game, having all the resource and the team to back it up, releases this? Come on, I use to bost about copy and paste, flash, multi tasking, blue tooth pan, because no other phone had it and with the first release, they didn't have any of it. Market is broken, no landscape URL input, he'll what's the point of having a 4" inch screen when 1/4" is taken up by the URL and favorite tabs on portrait, heard of autohide? Homescreen why do we need an arrow to tell us which way to go, I would've preferred them to fill up the whole screen. Lists goes on, once these are fixed, this OS is still way behind. Why do you think we are having this discussion in these forums, not just this one, many others. Go to XDA and Howard Forums. And check out the WP7 sections it's slow as hell, and the main topic right now is about the broken OS and people complaining and if you don't agree, your delusional.

      • Jonny

I would say WP7 does smoke the iphone, I have a HD7 and in terms of speed of user interface and slickness it definetly is slighty smoother.

So in terms of general feel of the OS and the way the features the phone does have are handled. I would say it does smoke the iPhone 4. The old argument against that is the iPhone has a few more features at the moment.

  • tegra2

they already have such a lead wp7 will never catch up. The whole goal is to beat rim and webOS to #3 so they don't totally fade into obscurity.

    • Markus

They mentioned their goal is to become #2 … not 3

  • moonman

They already demoed a lot of Mango features at MWC, Nokia could release a phone well on time for Q3 2011.

    • Roblo

Wow a full 2 years since announcement of WP7 to get full blown OS. Little to long if you ask me.
