Nokia’s first Windows Phone 7 handset will launch in 6 European countries first

At the 2011 Mobile Telecompaper conference Victor Saeijs, Vice President, Nokia Europe told attendees that the Netherlands will be included in the first wave to receive Nokia’s new Windows Phone 7 handsets.  The market has apparently become increasingly important, with a 80% by revenue penetration of smartphones there, well ahead of the rest of Europe.

According to Nokia this would bring the number of countries who will receive the launch handsets to 6 – Netherlands, France, Germany, UK, Spain and Italy.

Saeijs also re-iterated that Nokia’s first Windows Phone 7 handsets will indeed launch this year, saying he was carrying an early prototype himself which he of course could not show off.

    Oh no! No australia?

I’m really surprised that Nokia isn’t launching in the Nordic countries. Even FINLAND isn’t on the list? That almost makes me suspicious that someone doesn’t have their facts quite straight..

    • Azjerei

Exactly what I was thinking… they have always included Scandinavia amongst their prime countries.

Possibility that they may be releasing a pre-mango phone? In which case the marketplace isn’t supported in Finland. Just guessing.

      • HenningK

No way. I’m fairly certain Mango and Nokia WP7 are going to be a simultaneous release. Helps the marketing on both ends.

I think 6 countries are not enough = I personally am disappointed that they will come in Bulgaria after few months … but that’s usually with every handset. Nevertheless 6 countries are not enough and not launching in US… this is not right =

The only bit of information here is that Nokia WP7 handsets will also launch in Netherlands. I don’t see how from that one can get that Nokia handsets will launch only in 6 countries – I’m nearly 100% sure that Finland, Sweden, and Norway will feature too.

Makes little sense. Some information is missing here I guess. Maybe they want not to harm Symbian on some markets? Doubtful, Symbian is dying fast.

Perhaps they want to concentrate their marketing efforts and and make a strong marketing presence in these few countries. But I would still expect at least Finland in the list.

  • AngrySwede

So Omnia 7 16GB from Ebay.de now for 240 euro … or Nokia later for ? euro. 240 is about what I’m willing to pay for an experimental OS. At least with Symbian there is warez, unlocking and very few restrictions. Wouldn’t be surprised if M$ or some of its partners force Nokia to drop Ovi Maps even.

    • Anonymous

get yourself informed man.. Part of the deal was that MS will use ovi maps on wp7 .. ovi maps are better in any way compared to Bing maps.. even comparable to TomTom maps. If you re expecting to pay 240 euros for a dual core phone then you better look elsewhere.. its the hardware you are paying for not the software… and wp7 is not experimental..

I think it makes some sense.. they are starting with the markets they are strongest in and from there they can launch the world assault.

    • Anonymous

Exactly. If their sales have collapsed as much as analysts are saying they have they will need to hit first where they are strongest.

  • Himanshu

Guys read the article again. This conference was targeted to europe attendees. Nokia will offcourse target the Asian as well as US.

  • Anonymous

no asian countries (actually i mean hong kong ;) ) and WTF no scandinavian countries lol, this is nonsense :(

Come on guys everytime MS or a carrier makes an announcement the negativity starts all over again. There’s time left for other countries to be added arent the frequencies pretty much the same and your phones are either not carrier locked or can be unlocked and used anywhere? So why the loaning and groaning? At least you are getting it first before the US and Canada etc. Think positive!!!

  • Joe05

I’m not worried about any of this, as the year progresses you’ll see Nokia pre announce additional countries for release of the first wave of hand sets plus dates. They obviously want the logistics worked out before they say anything else.

  • Adam Robinson

They’ll follow the Apple strategy and launch in the strongest countries first and then after a week or 2 they’ll launch in the other countries.

you guys are killing crying what country isnt getting the phones, its saying which countries will get the phone first not the only countries getting it. relax take a deep breath, if you cant wait for a quality product then dont get something else (not trying to be rude). i already have an htc trophy but im willing to buy a Nokia especially if it has a front facing camera. its a great pruduct and waiting for nokia wont be a disappointment, good things come to thos who wait
