Nvidia CEO expects Windows Phone 7 apps to run on Windows 8

It has been widely speculated, but Nvidia’s CEO is likely the most authoritative source for the rumour that Windows Phone 7 applications will run on Windows 8.

Speaking to CNet News NVidia’s Chief Executive Jen-Hsun Huang said he believed apps written for Windows Phone 7 will run on Windows 8, which is an operating system designed for both PCs and tablets.

Microsoft has already shown Windows 8 tablets running on Nvidia quad-core processor boards, and the company likely has a lot of insight into the development of Microsoft’s next big OS.

He spoke of the opportunity now being presented to the company due to its ARM chipsets.

"We’re the only person actively on the dance floor with Qualcomm," he said. "We’ll be quite a force to contend with."

Likely referring to Intel, he observed "If you don’t have a mobile strategy, you’re in deep turd. If you’re not in mobile processors now, you’re seven years too late."

Windows 8 running on ARM will have the problem of incompatibility with x86 software, the bulk of the millions of Windows applications. Having compatibility with Windows Phone 7 applications will give the app store an immediate jump start, with applications already designed for mobile and touch. Rumours however of the user interface not being Silverlight based has however poured some cold water on the idea.

We expect a lot will be clarified in the Microsoft BUILD conference next week, running from the 13th to the 16th September.

Shouldnt get too cocky, no such thing as too late. Intel have a good name in processors, if they bring out a processor that out performs the others, then they wont be too late.

well Intel certainly has the power and IP to do something better performance wise…but the point is as long as they can’t reduce the battery consumption on x86 SIGNIFICANTLY, they have a snowballs chance in hell to beat ARM in the mobile industry, period.

And chances are x86 will never be as efficient as ARM but it seems like ARM might be as powerful soon…

Build an app for WP7 that can also seamlessly run on windows 8.

WOW! Now that is what I call game changing. Developers will not have to worry about re-coding/re-compiling etc.

One app able to run on all microsoft eco-systems (wp7, windows (PC), xbox, tablets)

If one company is able to achieve this greatness is microsoft. Come on synergy.

Chances are they will have to recompile for WP8, and that’s where the compatibility will come from (at a guess on my part, of course).

I wouldn’t have thought so since it uses framework and Silverlight.

I would suspect that the only code changes would be around the availablity of certain devices such as GPS, touch, Accelometer, Compass etc which may or may not be on any device.

But this is all opinion, no facts yet

Not sure if it’s even technically possible but it would be cool if the windows phone apps display the entire app in full screen on a tablet/PC without needing to pivot.

It’s a natural progression, really. I’m sure OS X will follow this strategy too.

Nobody should be surprised by this. There is nothing technical stopping this from being possible today with Windows 7. That is the power of the .Net framework/CLR (and Java for that matter), compile once, run everywhere.
