Opera Turbo comes to Windows Mobile

Just when you thought browsing couldn’t get any faster, Opera unveils its latest innovation for better browsing, Opera Turbo.

Opera Turbo is a compression solution, similar to its Opera Mini, which will be usable on the desktop with Opera and also for Opera Mobile. It reduced data transfer by up to 80%, thereby speeding up browsing. By taking the processing load onto Opera’s servers it will also allow low-end devices to enjoy a good web experience and fully supports dynamic Web technologies such as Ajax and Flash.

In a press release Jon von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software said “We are living in a time and place where access to the Web should be a universal right to all. Technology has advanced us to the point that we can very nearly access the Internet anytime and anywhere from a growing number of devices,”, “As part of Opera’s commitment to provide the best experience on any device, Opera has developed the Opera Turbo solution.”

The service is to be demonstrated at Mobile World Congress, and is to be sold to cell phone carriers and OEM’s as a way to conserve resources and provide end users with a good web experience independent of the hardware or network conditions.

hmm. did they read the forums and listened to me? a few weeks ago, i said i use Opera mini as my main browser cus it loads pages so fast! now they going to put proxy server on opera mobile! nice!

Prefer browsing without sending my data through 3rd party proxies, raises the age-old question of privacy. And with 3g, just how much faster would it be?

I agree with efjay. I’m ok with how fast Opera is now. Don’t want my data on a 3rd party server.

The truth is that speed isn’t the bottleneck here but performance of wm phone. This opera turbo could only improve the rendering speed but with coming cortex A8 cpu’s it shouldn’t be a problem on new phones.
So in the end. Good idea but a little bit too late I think.

You have to have used Opera Mini, Google web accelerator, and web proxies before.

Mobile devices these days are definitely i/o bound (aka choked) by horrible network bandwidth. It’s so easily illustrated by comparing 3G vs WiFi in Opera Mobile.

Web-sites are still naively coded by hacks chock full of redundant HTML, Word generated HTML, not using CSS, never learned anything more than HTML3, etc. Besides the hundreds of K of oversized images, anything to clean it up and shrink it definitely speeds the overall experience.

Even native 3D graphics is sped up with compressed textures. Just look at Chainfire’s CFC.

That’s the real truth. No “faster” processor of yours will bypass this basic limiter.

Agreed. At speeds of 1.5 Mbps with a bad signal, it should take two seconds to fully load a reasonable page at most.

The problem is these horrible processors that are in the Pro, X1, HD, Diamond, etc. They are just pathetic.
