Palm Pre Plus WIFI tethering to cost $40 per month, HTC HD2 owners ROFLMAO

Verizon has announced pricing for the Palm Pre Plus on the Verizon network. One of the major features of the Palm Pre Plus will be the WIFI Hotspot features, a feature pretty familiar to HTC HD2 owners which allow smartphone owners to share their 3G internet connection via WIFI with devices close to them.

Enabling the feature will add an additional $40 charge for 5GB of data with this 3G-based Wi-Fi connectivity. The $40 charge is levied on top of your calling and data plan so a Wi-Fi mobile hotspot-activated Pre Plus on a 450 minutes Talk and Text plan would cost you a whopping $129.99 per month ($59.99 for calling plan, $29.99 for Email and Web data plan and $40 for the Wi-Fi feature).

Launching the Palm Pre on Verizon was supposed to save Palm. Somehow in now rather seems unlikely.

This isn’t really a new concept in the US. If i remember correctly, AT&T charges the same amount for the same 5GB of data when you choose a tethering plan. i’m sure it’ll be a sore point for Verizon reps who have to explain that this feature will cost extra, but i don’t see this as something that’ll really hurt the Pre Plus. i would be very surprised to see the HD2 launch on T-Mobile here with the WiFi tethering enabled.

But si much for their claim of savings by Sprint if you are jumpong on the mifi teher of course if you get your tethered friends to contribute some coin for the tagalong that lessens the impact.

Arguably my favorite feature of WM. My co-workers are start scrambling to find a wifi signal while I just fire up my wifi router app and am on my way to 3G goodness.

First of all, when you enable tethering on Windows Mobile, you are doing it in such a way that prevents the carrier from knowing that you are tethering. They have plans in place to have you pay for tethering, so when you use it without paying, you are doing it behind their back.

Second of all, there is a free app called MyTether that lets you tether in the same way that Windows Mobile does. Behind the carriers back, while creating a WiFi hot spot that others can use.

I'm curious, why tether over WiFi? it kills both your laptop battery and the phone battery. Bluetooth or USB tethering is so much better, and they its natively in all ROMS. Furthermore, its not like 3G speeds tap out EDR or USB. So what's the advantage of tethering over Wifi?

When you tether through Bluetooth, or rather use the phone as a modem through Bluetooth, your provider can tell you’re doing it and will charge you through the nose for it. The same may apply to USB.

Through wifi they can’t detect it.

If they’d get a bloody clue about a reasonable business model we wouldn’t have to do all this pratting about!

exactly what the previous post, at precentral.net they show you how to install preware on your pre, or pixi and theres a program thats called mytether and its free. So verizon people who purchase a pre, or pixi can tether for free just like winmo. Also i still dont understand the bashing of palm, all because they decided to do their own thing, winmo D***heads think that palm will take away from winmo consumers. They wont, and for the most part like me I like both companies and currently own a pre for sprint, and can say its a step into the future with WEB OS. I also hope win 7 is everything its going to be and if a device comes out that i like, on sprint, ill be purchasing that. So lets stop bashing and look at the stock of palm, ($13 and rising) projected sales are over 7 million, and has already sold 2.45 million in 7 months. So yes verizon will help palm, as will At&t who are getting two devices in the 1st quarter too.

How you do this and what it costs aside, it doesn't seem to me that the Pre and the Pixi have actually done much to help Palm. Maybe it's just me but I could see them going up for sale sometime next year.
