Patent trolls names Microsoft, HTC, LG and everyone else in mobile e-mail suite
NTP claims to own all mobile e-mail.
NTP, one of the most famous patent trolls ever, who nearly managed to bring RIM to its knees and finally managed to squeeze more that $600 million out of the Blackberry business in 2006 is at it again, claiming to own mobile e-mail in all its forms.
The company names almost everyone, including Microsoft, HTC, LG, Apple, Google and Motorola, claiming they are illegally using NTP’s patented technology.
The US Patent Office’s board of appeals have already ruled that 67 of NTP’s patent claims in four patents were valid, including three claims that R.I.M. was found to have infringed.
“Every infringer is now on notice,” said Ron Epstein, counsel to NTP. “They are going to have to deal with this instead of trying to wait it out.”
That may however still be the best strategy, with the patent holder’s key patents said to expire in 2012, and increasingly most companies crafting their technology specifically to circumvent NTP’s patents.
