Poll: Windows Mobile 7 being announced at MWC, HD2 getting it – do you believe?

Now we have run into a few sceptics in our comment section, and of course more widely on the internet. We decided therefore to tabulate the evidence we have for Windows Mobile 7 being announced at Mobile World Congress, and of course coming to the HTC HD2.

Evidence for Windows Mobile 7 announcement at Mobile World Congress, release at the end of the year

As of October 2009 Windows Mobile 7 was on track.

An October slide leaked from Microsoft spoke of a Sprint 2010 Release To Manufacturers of Windows Mobile 7.

ZDNet leaked a Maldives test program for Windows Mobile 7 for Q1 2010, for shipping in Q3 2010.

Windows Mobile 7 is in testing. You don’t test an OS a year before release.

A reliable XDA-Dev tipster said the OS would come in Q3 2010.

Digitimes leaked a Q4 timescale for WM7.

Phil Moore from Microsoft says in December Windows Mobile 7 is coming late next year.

LG says they will ship Windows Mobile 7 handsets in 2010. If the handsets are set to ship at the end of the year, the OS needs to e announced soon, and MWC has been the traditional location for this for Microsoft.  Where else if not there?

Robbie Bach said they would discuss a product that’s not evolutionary, but looks, feels and acts completely different at Mobile World Congress. Whatever Windows Mobile 6.5.3 is, it is certainly evolutionary.

Office Vice President Kurt Delbene confirmed that Microsoft will be unveiling its plans for Windows Mobile 7 at the MIX 2010 conference in March 2010.  This is after Mobile World Congress.

Evidence for WM7 on the HTC HD2

The HTC HD2 matches the Chassis 1 specs for Windows Mobile 7.

The HTC HD2’s Snapdragon processor supports Windows Mobile 7

Besides the previous leaks about Chassis 1, we have confirmation from leaked CV’s that Qualcomm was working on supporting Windows Mobile 7 on their Snapdragon processor.

Greg Sullivan spoke of the platform work – the only mobile OS we know of with specific hardware requirements is Windows Mobile 7.

HTC HD2’’s HTC Sense UI contains Windows Mobile 7 references.

HTC confirmed an upgrade via Twitter.  Despite retracting it again, the initial confirmation appeared much more truthful than the much later retraction.

HTC Support staff confirming the HTC HD2 getting a free upgrade.

While the comment that support staff often know nothing is usually pretty accurate, HTC is still a small company, and the claim of a November or later free upgrade very specific.

Now after 2 hours of sifting through our Windows Mobile 7 coverage I am quite convinced.  Are you?  Let us know in the poll below.

Microsoft has been constantly disappointing us and the HD2 does NOT meet the requirements, it only has 512MB ROM and not 1GB ROM. Unless a microSD slot is an acceptable replacement for the 1GB ROM its not getting it.
Also it will be 1 year old by the time WM7 is released and from the past has HTC ever upgraded its 1 year old WM phones? No.

A very informed source within MS all but guaranteed a Win7 unveiling @ MWC to me.

All but guaranteed? Does he have any more info?

    I will be watching intently.

even if win7 doesn't officially comes to the HD2 I know we will bring it over unofficially after all, hardSPL is at xda

I think it might come when its launched in america, the HD2 will be a new device there and a few months later will probably be offered a wm7 upgrade.

I think MS would really want WM7 on the HD2 and maybe other snapdragon phones. they'd want as many people running WM7 as soon as possible so if they can get WM7 on the HD2 then they will. also if they intend to leak any ROMs then we need something to run them on.

However if HTC intended on giving the HD2 WM7 then you'd have thought they'd build it to meet all requirements. they may have chosen to give it less ROM space so they can bring out the HD3 as the flagship WM7 phone late this year.

Hey, thanks for responding to the comments with this post.

I personally am doubtful that WM7 will be available for purchase on devices any time in 2010, but I guess it's not totally impossible. But I just can't buy the fact that the HD2 will receive an official upgrade to WM7 from HTC… it's just makes no sense and I can practically bet it won't happen.

Not sure why you believe the Twitter statement saying WM7 would come to the HD2 seems more truthful than the later redaction of that statement? Didn't seem that way at all to me… in fact, the speed with which it was redacted and the tone of it made it seem like whoever updates HTC's Russian Twitter feed made a really big 'oops' and either he realized his mistake right away or he was rperimanded pretty badly for it.

I mean, two reasons to believe WM7 will come to the HD2… one Twitter post (which was taken back) and one clueless support line operator. Now stack up the evidence for the other side… the HD didn't get an upgrade to 6.5, so the HD2 is bound not to get the much bigger upgrade to WM7. Plus I hear it's quite more difficult to get a whole new version of CE on an older device… so if HTC can't be bothered to put out a simple upgrade to WM6.5 for those on 6.1, why would they work effortlessly to make a last-generation device work with a next-generation OS?

The best thing that can happen is WM7 is announced in February and it somehow makes it to the HD2 unofficially. Not only would that be much quicker than waiting for an official ROM (it's crazy, I'm seeing some phones are only just now getting official 6.5 upgrades) but I'm really thinking it's our only hope.

Since I am not a SKEPTIC (with a "K") I am sure WM 7 will be in the HD2. Why There is no other WM phone right now that can do a better job with WN7 than HD2.

    • Jos Dewey

Hahaha, I'm sure by the time WM7 is ready to ship HTC will have a new phone ready to go. No worries.

Look, even if WM7 is announced in February it won't come out for a few months after that at least, so it's perfectly plausible for HTC to have a new flagship phone ready to go… even if they only repackage the HD2's hardware, they gotta do something for the big launch of WM7 rather than merely upgrading their flagship phone that came out 8 months prior.

IF wm7 is going to be announced in mwc THEN 6.5.3 should also be announced there, because it really doesn't make sense to announce it later. Of course, it may never be announced at all. So whatta you guys think? Two announcements at mwc>
