Report: Microsoft Gives £20m For Nokia To Promote Windows Phones

We all know that Microsoft and Nokia were in a agreement to jointly market Windows Phone devices. As Nokia is going to reveal the first Windows Phone devices later this month, both the companies must be preparing for marketing those devices. According to the report from Mobile Today UK, Nokia is receiving £20m amount to promote Windows Phones from Microsoft. Nokia will use them to run a massive campaign for Windows Phones. Even Samsung is planning to promote Omnia Windows Phone devices by pumping over £8m.

Doubt any of that will be seen, considering Microsoft spent half a billion promoting WP and I only saw a few ads on tv, and some wallpapers in a Telstra store here in Australia

@Alex F. There was a report a few months ago that Nokia would be jointly advertising WP, so this amount from Microsoft is probably Microsoft’s portion of that joint effort; Nokia will be footing the bill for the rest, since they have their own budget for promoting Nokia ‘devices’
(regardless of OS). In addition, the source indicates that this is money for the launch in the UK.

Ultimately, the oems are responsible (as they should be) for the marketing budgets of the devices that the manufacture and the telecoms are responsible for marketing the devices that they are trying to move and that will get people locked into a contract. And yes, Microsoft is responsible for the standalone adverts that tout the benefits of the OS; so hopefully for the 2011-2012 year, we will see fruitful efforts from all three stakeholders.

This is pennies in advertising. Activision spent $150 million advertising Modern Warfare 2 (which went on to make over a billion dollars) and I saw ads for that game everywhere which is what WP7 needs to be doing.
