Report: Skype For Windows Phone Beta Imminent

The most awaited app for Windows Phone platform is Skype. Being part of Microsoft’s own division, Skype is yet to release a Windows Phone app. According to wp7lab, a beta version of Skype for Windows Phone is coming soon and in the coming weeks invitations will be sent for the same. Also Microsoft has already started dogfooding the app inside the organization.

“Skype for Windows Phone is just around the corner and we’ve teamed up with the Skype folks to help with beta testing. If you are receiving this newsletter directly, look for an invitation in the coming weeks and be on the inside track for what is sure to be one of the hottest new apps on the Marketplace!”

If beta version is just around the corner, expect the final version of Skype soon.

Coming weeks … euphemism for a few months. >_>

Its only a BETA version and they normally not to euphonious about it..

      • Anonymous

Yes it is. Beta is the final phase before releasing. It’s a phase of quality control, no further changes – unless the quality is insufficient.

A program doesn’t go Beta before the developers believe they’ve got everything covered, except for rare bugs. And to find those, they need to have many people just try and use the app.

atleast its not valve time, coming weeks = decades to them :P

I believe it says dogfooding invitations will be sent out soon to MS employees only (as in, Microsoft will begin inside beta testing in a couple of weeks. The app itself will probably be landing in the marketplace after this dogfooding process (not as beta). At least that’s what it got from Wp7lab :)

not going to applaud MS for this since they are way too late…

I keep in mind: what they make/release from now on is the best quality I have ever witnessed. I’m sure they don’t want any negative complaints about the app itself (I know they receive it now for being late) But it sure as hell is a lot worse if they app itself sucks big time  (especially now they own Skype) and other platforms have a Skype app that functions well.

    It’s only getting tested now!

Honestly it is pretty embarrassing that it has taken this long.  I just hope the delay has been due to work on the service side, such as adopting Live accounts in place of the Skype accounts.  If I have to enter in my old Skype username / password, then this is a huge fail.

I don’t think it is embarrassing at all. Last year when they discussed the app at Mix11, Skype was solely in charge, and responsible, for developing the app; Skype didn’t follow through to have it released in time for Mango.  And given that Microsoft wasn’t able to have a hand in the developement until the Skype deal was finalized in October, that Microsoft moved in and ushered the development of the app, not to mention their obvious progression to have it baked into the OS (at some point) in a matter of a few months (from October) is really nothing to be embarrassed about.

And it’s not like all of the first gen WP device owners can take advantage of the video calling anyway; right now there are other alternatives to the ‘voice’ feature of Skype, so no one is exactly ‘hurting’ by not having Skype, nor did not having Skype prevent WP users from purchasing those devices.

What would be embarrassing though, is if the Skype app/feature doesn’t work as smoothly as it does on other OSes.

You don’t think its embarrassing at all?  Skype has had an app for iPhone and Android for a long time now.  The fact that they never considered WP7 important enough to make an app for is already embarrassing.  Now queue in the Microsoft acquisition, announced all the way back in May (a few months shy of a full year ago), and finalized in October, half a year ago.  And we hear that there is an app that is just now going into a closed beta???  If all this delay were because windows phone would be getting some unique super amazing Skype integration into the OS, then I could maybe understand.  But that isn’t happening until Apollo at the earliest.  Instead, from the sounds of it, this is just an app on the level of what has already been on competing platforms for years.  There may be plenty or organizational and technical excuses for this.  I myself am a developer and I know the process can take a while and run into hurtles.  But perception wise, you cannot deny this is embarrassing for Microsoft.

in time no one will remember it was late, but they will remember it if it sucks

Haha, yes, that is true.  Better late than terrible.

i would argue with you but read my first comment, if you dont like MS and how they do things then hey to hell with them but for me im riding with them. some people act like married wifves and MS is the husband, the woman are never satisfied, nothing is ever enough.

Don’t get me wrong, I have been an MS fanboy for the last several years.  In my view, MS has been on a roll with great products and services.  Xbox, Office 2010, Win 7, Skydrive, Mesh, WP7, IE9, Bing, VS2010, .NET.  I love the crap out of all of that and I think they are building an incredible ecosystem.  But that doesn’t mean I won’t give criticism when criticism is due.  I want to see Windows Phone succeed and stuff like this Skype delay frustrate me.

It’s been over year since this was shown at Build.

    • Anonymous

You either have your time span wrong or your conference wrong, because Build was only like 6 months ago.

He means MIX or MWC last year as Skype was shown.

Guys, it’s only been 3 months.  MS was prohibited by law NOT to touch or develop anythign with Skype until the aquistion was approved.

    Dang, only been three months!

if MS dosent have it their behind, when MS gets it why it took so long, when MS was the first to do it- its still lacking, when MS does it better it gets complaints about something else and when its MS period its a fail. MS cant get a break from some of you guys, none of the other competitors are making faster and better improvements then MS has done within the las year. i guess then again it doesnt matter to those few who wont give them a break.
