Rumor: “Tuck and Paste” How Windows phone 7 will tackle copy and paste

couriertuck

Remember the Courier, and its ingenious method of copy and paste by “tucking” items to the center spine, or maybe the Kin spot. Well, if blogger msftnerd’s sources are correct, that is the method via which copy and paste will come to Windows phone 7. It is a elegant method of solving this age old problem and here is just a taste of the implementation.

I was really pleased, then, to hear that Microsoft had figured out a better way and that it would be coming in an update soon after the world-wide launch of the first wave of phones. You see, the company has pulled this implementation straight out of the “canceled” Courier dual-screen booklet project. Now, Courier had the middle hinge to act as a temporary virtual clipboard, and WP7 doesn’t have one. So, where do the copied items go? Straight up, at the top edge of the screen in portrait and on the side opposite the app-bar in landscape orientations…

The post: Windows Phone 7 clipboard: “Tuck and Paste” goes into so much more detail so hit the link and get ready to be amazed!  A word of caution though, this is all speculation/rumor so it needs to be taken with a grain of salt. However, it is not that far fetched from reality IMHO because Microsoft already posses the technology. So what do you guys think if this turns out to be true (crossing my fingers)?

Microsoft also stated when the courier project ended that they wanted to implement technologies from it into other products. this makes perfect sense and lines up with that claim.

copy and paste is a relic from the windows pc, and as Microsoft always says "the phone is not a pc"

hmm, I don't know. there's just something about the implementation that doesn't seem to work well with me. plus the way how it was said…such vivid details…

Well when I had those awful days with the Kin's…. I actually liked that I had copy and paste on the bottom….. I rarely used that feature, but it was good to know I had it. And it also allowed me to copy more and more and paste just what I need when I need it rather than hose WM, Android, and iPhone does it with just your previous item being allowed to paste.

This would be revolutionary. I imagine Steve Ballmer on stage, making jokes about how pathetic the iOS and Android c&p solutions are compared to WP7… harhar xD

I think it's a cool way to do it if it's true and it does come out to be like that. It could look great, and not be tied to the old menu way of doing things that the PC has done for so long. A newer more visual way like this would turn quite a few heads and make up for the fact it's missing right now since something like this needs more time to polish and work out.

I like the idea of a visual clue for users as to what's in the clipboard, however this may be similar to the metaphor of cards in the PalmOS in that users don't immediately understand its use and thus ignore the feature. Hopefully that wouldn't be the case as I'd love to see it implemented.

P.S. Would take up some screen real estate though!

Reminds me of the 'delighters'(you know those small updates that improve the experience and make the phone more usable and fun) they mentioned. Hopefully multitasking will be one of those delighters :)

      Don't be ridiculous.

It would certainly be very impressive and possibly allow you to copy multiple pieces and recall them in no specific order it would certainly 1up every other mobile device.

This is why I hate rumors. This idea makes so much sense and is much needed, and now that I know about it I will be very upset if it doesn't appear. The thought of being able to store multiple items on the clipboard is great, but I have a feeling Microsoft will limit it to one item to not confuse users.

I think they do a pretty good Job with the Copy and Paste panel in MS Word…which allows you to copy different paragraphs and store them in the clipboard until you want to paste them. That seems to work well and its not confusing, I hope they find a way to bring something similar to WP7
