Rumour: Microsoft investing in a library of exclusive apps for Windows Phone

A reliably tipster has told us that Microsoft is trying to take on the smartphone competition the same way it did Sony with the Xbox – by creating a library of exclusive games which will be so good buyers will get a Windows Phone just to play them.

According to our tipster some of these games are already in development, and we can expect an exclusive app a month to be released.

Microsoft will also continue its offensive to get the key apps from iOS on Windows Phone 7 .

Of course the problem with this strategy is recognizing when our ‘Halo’ will come around, and if Windows Phone in its current incarnation has enough power to create something impressive.

The solution of course is to bring actual Halo or Gears of War to Windows Phone and keep it exclusive, a strategy Microsoft has been failing completely with recently, with the most recent opportunity being the Halo Companion app.

We look forward to what Microsoft can come up with, but suggest Microsoft looks what they have in their closet already.

Thanks to our tipster.

I would like some Autodesk and Adobe apps for example, better than games, but it’s a start.

    • Anonymous

It would be nice if Autodesk developed their next version with mobile in mind. Seamless integration would be great

Bring mobile versions of games like Halo, Forza, Shadow Complex, etc. and it has a good chance to attract the Xbox 360 audience especially when they can earn achievements to their gamertags!

    • Anonymous

If somehow they can port over the XBLA and XB indie library their set.

      • Jony G

That would be awesome, Xbox arcade has an incredible library…

    and what happens with skype?

    • Mico Naddeo

Including/pushing Skype will probably hurt their relationship with the carriers. They need the carriers to push their phones so I don’t see it happening.

        o.O fuck!

I settle with just an index card app at the moment.

it sure would be exclusive, but I can’t see the point in developing software for all 6 WP7 owners in the world ?

the problem with metro is this………………

the windows designer was at home, playing with his son, when….he sneezed into his sons box of lego….

yes u guessed it, the result was a large splattering of snot…………..metro was born

listen guys get a life, get android (TM)

looking at the latest roadmap, i would give up now. Android activates more handsets in 18 seconds than redmond does in a Quarter.

I was reading all the (laughable) old posts about “just you wait till nokias new phone is released posts”…….pathetic……………..utterly pathetic…………WP7 is like eating flour……………..booooooring

Of course they activate more devices per second. When you buy an Android Phone and open it’s box, it’s already obsolete. (See Galaxy SCL – no ICS)
But don’t worry, you still can hope for a custom cooked ICS ROM. You may have a few small problems, like the camera not working or not being able to download gmail attachments, but otherwise fast and smooth.

Take your own advice: get a life and stop trolling. Go root your malware-infested “smart”phone and manage your programs to try and hack another 5 minutes of battery life out of it. Maybe you’ll make it to lunch without charging his time!

This is where the standardization on last gen hardware is going to kill them, there is no way the current hardware platform will be capable of things that look as good as what you can get on other platforms (and those other platforms already have the backing of major game studios as well as a big head start).

The real risk is that they get desperate and give these chosen games native access in the hopes of gaining some traction, and in doing so they alienate the bulk of their developers. The upside is that they become more competitive against Android and siphon off a little market share.

Infinity blade runs smoothly on an ipod touch 3gen…

      • Anonymous

But Infinity Blade II benefits measurably from the dual core/fast GPU A5. If Microsoft is aiming to compete with almost 2 year old games they’ve already lost.

        • http://www.facebook.com/Luffy07 Sergio Gonzalez

Yeah but even if there were some changes (I sill haven’t played infinity blade 2) the graphics don’t seem to have change that much and if a 2 year old device (600MHz, Cortex-A8 achitecture) can run it, there is no doubt that any current WP device could also do it.

          • Anonymous

Most reviewers were pretty wowed by the graphics on Infinity Blade II, if you try and run it on older hardware the graphics are noticeably poorer (Infinity Blade I level).

But still nicer than any other game…

Wasn’t EA bringing many exclusive games to Nokia Windows Phones?! We sure would like to see those materialize sooner than later!!! Halo to all Windows Phones would be the best exclusive game to have!

  • Anonymous

just one tip: don’t make them available on iOS after saying it’s exclusive

  • Anonymous

Microsoft can use E3 to promote Windows Phone gaming

  • http://twitter.com/laserfloyd Lewis McCrary

See? The plan comes to light.  They make the apps that we thought were exclusive available to other platforms.  The other platforms say “HA HA we have your apps you thought you were special”.  Now if this news holds up we can say “Actually….”.  Then we can tell them “enjoy those apps because you’ll never be able to run these.” ;)

I hope its true. WP7 needs them.
