Samsung Focus and LG Quantum now only $99 on AT&T

The Samsung Focus and LG Quantum have both just seen a steep discount on AT&T, with the handsets, which started at $199 now available for only $99.99 with free activation and shipping.

Interestingly the HTC Surround is still $199.99, but however also benefits from free activation and shipping.

So what's the reason behind it? I can only think of the sales being too low, but without official numbers we can only guess.

Probably just a seasonal sale. AT&T is probably the last vendor to sell their phones at a discount, so I'm pretty sure this is just a random sale for January.

at&t wanting to diversify off iphone since it's losing it's exclusivity.

Still more expensive than Amazon and other online shops where most Android and WP7 phones can be had for free. Other than getting your old plan grandfathered (e.g. unlimited data), I can't think of a reason to buy phones directly from AT&T.

Except for people upgrading. Amazon, Wirefly, Wal-Mart, and Best Buy very rarely offers those prices for people wanting to extend contracts. I know because that's what I tried doing Had to go through AT&T instead.

Costco does, and they throw in a car charger with it. They are at $49.00 for the Focus and Quantum, check their on line store. You can also get them at the same price in the store, I know went in and asked.

I got the Focus at Costco for $99 (upgrade price) and of course it came with the car charger and the holster no one wants to get caught dead wearing

Authorized dealer Wirefly.com had every Windows Phone 7 for free a while ago for current AT&T customers — the Focus, the Quantum, the Surround, and the HD7. They had free activation from AT&T too, though that ended last week. These sales are not unusual.

Actually, I got a Focus for a penny. No shipping, no upgrade fee, and I've kept my unlimited data package. I shouldn't get charged from Amazon because I've done nothing to violate the terms for their massive phone discount.

Probably because they are going to release new, more powerful phones after CES announcements.

That's my thought on that too. Phones will be anounced on other providers, but ATT would like to entice some people to switch before the announcement. I ordered one three weeks ago actually, but then returned it 'cos I wouldn't get the discount I'd been counting on – worst part is they made me pay for the days the phone was in transit, and I did not even use the phone at all!!!.

Just realized a line on my family plan is eligible for upgrade WITH an instant $100 'customer loyalty' discount for being there 2+ years. SO I'll pick up another Focus for free! Sweet!

It looks like for upgrades the activation is NOT waived and the shipping is free, but NOT overnight (2-day instead). Still a decent price if you're eligible for it.

They should have been $100 to start with. They're fairly high end phones, but the Focus's 8GB of storage is lacking when compared to other $200 devices. Now that they've soaked us early adopters for the higher prices, they can start picking up volume at a better price point.
