Samsung GT-i8700 is the Windows Phone 7 I have been waiting for

500x_samsungfIt seems our mysterious Samsung smartphone has finally received a name.  Gizmodo has been tipped off about a Samsung handset, the Samsung GT-i8700, which runs Windows Phone 7.

Not much more detail is available, except that it sports 8 GB of storage, but from the blackness of the screen it likely sports a AMOLED screen.

We have seen the seen the device leaked in distant shots before, but these close-ups confirm it is a real looker, with a edge to edge screen which really shows off the chrome-less design of Windows Phone 7.

If the HTC HD7 does not deliver, this is definitely my next phone.

See another picture of the back after the break.

WP7 is taking too long. Can we just skip September and October?

  • Drewidian

Is 8 Gigs really enough after you download 8-10 Games and 20 Apps? Add in your music, pictures and movies, and it looks woefully inadequate. I want a landscape slider with at least 16 GB to begin with and a 4+ inch screen. The screen looks great though. It may mean I wait to see what HTC has just to make sure. Now that I think of it.. This is probably their entry to midline phone so people who don't do a lot with media can get on board and a lower price. Since it is early they probably are holding out with the big guns for the launch. I still say they should have supported microsd since I usually carry alot of movies and music around with me on my TP2. Time will tell

    • adamucf

Yea, I want more than 8GB. I intend on making my WP7 phone my music player and I'm gonna need at least 16gb, maybe 32gb.

  • gullygod

This is it, but I heard Samsung HW seem to be plagued with problems.

    • gullygod

      * Plague

    • truzz

Nope, usually Samsung hardware is top notch. Their software and OS customizations are usually a mess, but this shouldn't be a problem anyway, since OEMs can't modify WP7 OS. Anyway 8gb won't do for me too.

  • Jin

Looks great!! Oh and just to let you guys know, the YouTube app is confirmed at 3:34 in this video!!!

  • efjay

8GB doesnt cut it I'm afraid. Music, movies, applications, pictures will consume that in a flash. Unless they pull an Omnia and also have a 16GB version, this is inadequate. Stupid MS with such a low storage space requirement when flash storage is so inexpensive.

    • James K

With WP7, you don't have to store your pictures and movies on the phone. You can have it all uploaded to SkyDrive and use your phone to retrieve it all. With WP7, you automatically get 25GB of cloud storage on SkyDrive.

      • smoothcrooner

        Yeah, you are right!

I was thinking that 8GB wasn't nearly enough, but with 25GB of storage on SkyDrive, this could very well be my next phone.

If the HTC HD7 comes with a Super AMOLED screen, then, who knows, but I doubt it.

      • qmt49

Don't forget Facebook as well – it will also pull in your Facebook photos. Between these two services ther's really no need to sync any photos from your PC in most cases.

      • efjay

The only thing that gets uploaded to Skydrive are your pictures and if I recall correctly its not the full resolution that get uploaded, you will only get the full res when you sync with your PC. Maybe that can be changed but as I said, Skydrive sync only covers pictures, videos & music do not sync to Skydrive so the storage will still be inadequate.

        • GP007

Depending on where you are and the data plan you have you can just stream music as well with a Zune pass. Or over your home wifi network you can stream your stuff off of your PC as well etc. I'm sure 8GB will be the starting space for a few lower end models, I figure any 8GB devices will go for pretty cheap.

          • efjay

What if you dont want a zune pass at an extra cost over the data and calling plan one would already have for the device? I already have my music downloaded so no reason to rely on streaming. What about when you're on the metro, areas with no connectivity? Plus that certainly wont be possible with at&t's new data plans and I havent seen anything that enables streaming from a PC. So having the multimedia local on the device is the best solution.

If I cant upgrade the storage space I will be wanting 32gb, 16gb at a very minimum

  • WP7?

Do i see a front-facing camera on the top right corner? Perhaps it could be the terrible university monitor i am on :(

    • http://wmpoweruser.com wmpoweruser

Looks like the standard light and proximity sensors.

    • http://www.facebook.com/chris.lynch.hp Chris Lynch

Looks like there is a front facing camera, and the other is the prox/light sensor.

  • Durishin

Waiting for the Dell. Then I'll decide which one. Tilt 2 fine. For now…

    • efjay

Funny thing is the leaked specs for the Dell also mentioned 8GB as their storage capacity, if thats so my HD2 just might survive a while longer….

  • EminiSP

I think we have a winner ladies and gents.

  • Fredrik72

Exactly, the back is not pretty, at all. It also doesn't look very durable.

    • http://www.facebook.com/chris.lynch.hp Chris Lynch

Huh? How so? The back of the phone looks pretty fine to me. Also, have you physically thouched it? If not, then there is no point in making a final judgement until it's officialy released and you go to a store and see for yourself.

And what about the back of the phone needs to have "bling" or "not like 2007?" What the heck does that mean anyway?

      • Lennard

the back doesn't need to have "bling" but its aesthetics need to match up with the front. if it doesn't then the device just looks half assed.

  • Drewidian

I also think that this is the first round of phones and that we'll see much better devices in round 2 of next year when WP7 is successful. Then you should see more manufacturers get on board and more carriers. To differentiate themselves from one another you'll see better HW and features like front facing cameras, more internal storage, Micro SD returning, and more DLNA type features implemented. I still will probably get on board this year, but I'm definitely getting a 1 year plan even if it costs me 70 bucks more initially. I'd love to see Motorola get back in the game.

    • Craig S

My contract ends April making it a great time to look at new phones, but I can't wait… this Fuze is getting real old

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=177203275 Randy Williams

Yes this is definitely a phone that will be mines if they upgrade the memory and fix USB Storage feature on this phone because I dont even use 8gb but it will be nice to have 16gb of storage besides the Skydrve networked with 25gb…

  • Lundon

I'd like to see the specs before I make a judgement but I'd say based on the pic it could be runner up to the HD3 aka HD7. 8GB could be an issue, can't tell the screen size either.. but it does look pretty!

  • Travis

Hopefully the 8GB listed above on the specs screen are just for the prototype pre-production models…

    • Drewidian

That is true. Pre-production models wouldn't need the extra storage for testing. Perhaps the production one will have at least 16 and hopefully 32 GB of memory. Good point.

  • http://twitter.com/chmun77 @chmun77

I do agree that the back look kinda a turn off…..But I guess I will be staring @ the front screen rather than the back. Just like my HD2. So, not really a concern for me.

    • Lennard

I hear you. but u'll prolly be surprised at the amount of times a person see the back of their phone. I for one see the back of my phone a lot.

      • http://twitter.com/WMPerson @WMPerson

I never see my pack unless I am taking out the battery to go back to Windows Mobile :D
So a back like that might bother me a bit (unless its justified with a 5MP camera), but atleast it looks sexy in the front unlike those other devices.

  • bch

Samsung looking good. And it looks like the Asus WP7 phone is shown in this video:

  • Craig S

    No keyboard. Still waiting

  • http://www.Appatic.com Avatar X

Do agree that the back of the device don't matches up. But still my favorite so far. This is as close as we get from a Zune Phone, thanks to the front look. Only dissapointment may be it don't got a frontal camera and 16gb instead of 8gb. Would had made it top notch and a true HTC HD3 competitor.

  • kangu

Is it too much to ask for just ONE leaked picture of the HD7???? I don't mind if Mr. Blurrycam man gives us a blurry picture…I just wanna see that BEAST!!

  • Derrick Reder

The HTC HD3 that everyone thinks is the HD7 is not. That 4.5 inch monstrocity of a screen was a fan mock up, and it will not look like that.
