Samsung working on a Windows Phone version of the Samsung Galaxy S II?

samsung-sgh-1937-mockupVia the Bluetooth SIG we learn that Samsung is working on a successor to its popular Samsung Focus smartphone.

That device, the Samsung SGH-i917 is getting is bit long in the tooth, with the even slimmer Samsung Galaxy S II (SGH-i927)  with a larger 4.3 inch screen stealing the limelight on AT&T.

Now the Samsung SGH-i937 is showing up on the Bluetooth SIG, and we know this is a Windows Phone 7 Mango handset for two reasons- 1) it has the exact same Bluetooth profile as the Mango Windows Phone 7 stack and 2) the device has shown up on Occasional Gamers list of Windows Phone 7 handsets running its games.

The Samsung Galaxy S II is only 8.5mm thick, has a dual core processor, 1 GB of RAM and 16 or 32 GB of flash storage, 4.3 inch Super-AMOLED screen, 8 megapixel camera with LED Flash, 2 megapixel front facing camera and DLNA.

With the version number 10 up from the Galaxy S II we can only hope some of the features of than handset also finds a home on the Windows Phone 7 handset.

With a new wave of handsets running Mango expected in the fall we should see a number of handsets leak out over the next few months.

Well, it wouldn’t be very surprising, seeing how Omnia 7 and Focus were Samsung Galaxy running WP7 … What WOULD be surprising is if Samsung used its own SoC, instead of a Qualcomm one …

    • Pinktacoyummmm

      well hello ;)

Bring the heat Samsung, also bring it to Sprint please

    • the-hq

      Oh you!

    • Anonymous

SPrint only likes fat MS phones. They didn’t carry the imagio/whitestone, they didn’t get the HD2 and they opted for the Arrive over a phone that the majority would want. It is OK for Sprint to sell bulky small screened MS phones but they should also carry a good MS phone as well.

I really hope Samsung brings some cutting edge technology to WP. Not only because they are a great company but because somebody has to challenge Nokia before they get lazy.

    • Anonymous

Good lord, you saying “before” Nokia get lazy, and they’ve yet to release a single WP7 device. Sheesh.

    • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/CW3SETFCKRB5NRLX5QZK3EMRWY Joe

Since Nokia has bet the farm, mortgaged the ranch and is all in with WP I dont see them getting l;azy anytime soon. Quite the contrary they have everything to lose literally if they falter or rest on their laurels especially in the NA markets.

  • Pwaggs

Bring it on. Beautiful phone. Nice replacement to my Focus. I may have abandoned HTC. I loved my previous HTC’s but the Sammy’s just seem so much sexier.

    • rsgx

      Their only problem is updates.

Saying that, Mango looks to be near perfect.

      • appie flappie

For your information, Samsung has been doing updates faster then HTC for Android. The difference with WP7 is that Samsung has nothing to say about updates.

        • http://www.facebook.com/deadonthefloor Mark Firemoon

Uhm, the difference with WP7 is Samsung changing the damn hardwaer revision without informing MS.

That being said, my Focus took the Mango update fine.

          • ThomasJ2772

My Focus took the mango update smoothly also.

      • Anonymous

Mango is nice except it still doesn’t have support for 3rd Gen Snapdragron ( ie. dual core ) like this phone uses.

Galaxy S II without 3rd gen Snapdragon is going to lose a lot of the power benefits and great GPU performance that the chip brings.

  • Zowniak

    That would be awesome.
I need 32GB storage (16GB is not enough for me).
    I want S-AMOLED screen
    I want long-life battery.
I was told that the Galaxy S II has a huge battery life. Is it true?

    • Guesst

Yeah it has a way to scale back the speed of each CPU core independently under light load, which takes up significantly less voltage; hence less battery.
It would make sense for Sammy to make another WP7 device based off the Galaxy S II chasis like they did with the Focus. As Sammy is selling Android devices like crazy why create something new for WP7, when they already have a great phone. Personally a Gallaxy S II runing Mango is essentially a perfect match. The only other thing i would want is a Carl Zeiss lens (which of course wont happen), but we can always dream! Hears looking at you Nokia. So what will it be the SeaRay or Gallaxy S II running WP7…the choices the choices… finally some good choices!

      • http://twitter.com/TheeBladeOGrass Michael Pendergraft

Hard choice indeed! I’ve always said every since the unveiling of the Galaxy SII that the only thing I would take over a WP7 Nokia is a WP7 Samsung with the Galaxy SII specs. Competition is good!

    • Dhaoracle

Yes I would definintely want this if Nokia drops the ball on what they are bringing to the game. I definitely want the Super AMOLED Plus and 4.3 in” screen. If Nokia doesn’t provide I will be getting this phone for my WP7.5 Phone.

      • http://twitter.com/jpmalum JP

        My thoughts Exactly …

  • Lulz

I just wish they’d fix the radio firmware or whatever so that 2G – Edge – 3G switching works. Both the GSII (Android) and Omnia 7 wont work properly with Telia in Sweden. Calls are cut off or scrambled. Only fix I’ve seen is to lock the device to either 2G or 3G. Samsung has been “working” on it for months now to no avail.

    • Anonymous

      Hi,

I have the Samsung Omia 7 and the same problem I think… If I switch from wifi to 3g…I often have to pull the battery, before I can acually connect to the 3g network. I thought this was a WP7 issue???? But it isn’t is this a specific Samsung/hardware issue? You said they were adressing the issue, do you have some link? Thanks!!!

PS about the subject :) I hop Samsung puts some good compadative phones out, so we will actually have a choice between good and better..instead of crap and crappyer :) ….Am I the only one who thinks the design of the HTC phone is UGLY :(

  • Vinnie

I want this bad. If they lower the specs for the WP7 version I will be very upset.

    • http://twitter.com/mrcraggle Craig Osborne

They more than likely will. This will probably contain a 1.5 single core processor (probably not of Samsungs design) at most from what we’ve seen. MS has a minimum requirement for WP7 yet not one phone released for WP7 so far has gone above it. While dual core is nice to have, WP7 doesn’t need it. I’ve never had a situation on my Omnia 7 where i’ve gone, I wish this had a dual core in it.

      • Anonymous

i hope they dont increase the specs. the beauty is that the wp7 battery life is 10 times better than those dual core battery drainers.

        • appie flappie

Well learn something first. Dual core is actually BETTER for your battery life. The SGS2 is much better in battery life compared to SGS.

      • appie flappie

I do agree that Dual Core in most cases is overkill and that i am more interested in better gpu. But sometimes dual-core can be really good when you need to film in 1080P or watch 1080P movies.

        • Anonymous

Have you tried playing Xbox Live games like Sonic?

WP7 does need dual-core, just as every operating system will do better with dual core.

If the OS is running smoothly on one thread, other applications can use the other core. How would an OS not benefit from that? And worse still, now that we have third-part multi-thread support. Users are going to expect smooth music playback while they play their FPS.

Finally, the key is not only supporting multi-core but supporting 3rd Generation Snapdragon, which comes with a host of other features like better 4G support and a extremely better GPU.

Given my experience with Samsung Focus, I am gonna go ahead and say “no”. Coming from an iPhone 4, the build quality was a shock for me. I still can’t get over the plasticy build of Samsung devices. Not to mention that the Focus was pretty much the #1 device with update issues and firmware troubles, I don’t have a lot of confidence in their ability. They do make amazing screens though…

I am certainly going with a Nokia device soon. I want a good camera, as in actually good not tons of Megapixels that deliver bad pictures.

This is good though for WP7 since people do like Samsung devices. Just not the devices for me.

    • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/CW3SETFCKRB5NRLX5QZK3EMRWY Joe

I find the focus while somewhat flimsy or what you call plasticy that it is quite capable as a phone anfd while I have issues with the update process as far as 7392 that its not that big of a deal. I think and hope that ATT and Samsung and MS are getting better at testing and deploying updates. I like the specs and I prefer samsung to htc I am waiting to see what Nokia comes out with and my upgrade time will be at the first week in November so that may be about the perfect time 32 gb will be good for me although as soon as 32 comes outy yuou know that many many people will be clamoring and wondering when the 64 gb devices are coming. And we know they will come!

    • appie flappie

Focus had some problems, but just like with Android i think Samsung has learned its leason and will just use normal firmwares for her next phones.

The fact is that Samsung has the best performance with WP7. Samsung uses nand-memory and has the best screen technology.

  • http://fxfp.com/ Alex F.

THAT is what I’m waiting for! Not some mythical Nokia greatness.

  • Anonymous

Guess I’m the only one who finds that huge button horrible looking.

    • Anonymous

its hideous. i love the capacitive buttons on the focus.

    • Anonymous

Its just a mock-up. Who knows what the casing will actually look like.

    • Smith

      You are not alone.

This is very terrible design. Even if they pay me $200 I will not take phone with design and look like this.

With Nokia as a major player in Windows Phone market now and cosidering their very good build quality and cool design GOOD LUCK SAMSUNG if this is the best you can do. this is ugly ugly design with that horrible looking button.

galaxy s II screen is too big. for anyone who doesnt know, the screen is 4.5 inches. for comparison, HD7 is 4.3 inches and that already is huge.

they couldnt product super amoled+ screens smaller than 4.5 inches so they said screw it.

    • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/CW3SETFCKRB5NRLX5QZK3EMRWY Joe

You are entitled to your opinion and other are entitled to agree or disagree with you the market will determine whether its too big too small or just right.

      • Anonymous

its almost impossible to sit down with a 4.5 inch phone in your pocket.

        • http://www.searingarrow.com AlienSix

          Thats what sh….

          Nevermind

        • Anonymous

? My HTC HD7 has no problem sitting in my pocket. For me the bigger the screen size the better for playing games and apps, and for doing some productivity work. Yes give me a good screen size super amoled, or Goz-glass. This is something I would keep my eye on but I’m not committing on anyone device until I see what Nokia brinks to the table.

          • http://twitter.com/winlivematt winlivematt

Nonsense – the screen is a beautiful size. It’s not too big at all. Plus there’s no trouble sliding it into a trouser pocket, if you were being emo and wearing skinny jeans then you might have a problem.

        • appie flappie

Nah it isnt. Because its thin you wont even feel it in your pants.

    • King

the screen is 4.3 inches the same as the HD7 (http://www.samsung.com/global/microsite/galaxys2/html/specification.html)

and its much slimmer than an HD7 or any phone out right now

  • Anonymous

that sII- harware probably gonna be good for wp8 also… anyways- wp7 is going to have a really hot fall… with nokias and mangoes and dual cores and many many morez….

  • King

This is my dream phone for WP7 mango buttttt with brandon watson’s recent interview saying that dual core phones arent needed (or supported) at this point it makes me believe that the focus to will be a stripped down version of the GS2 :( here’s hoping that the dual core can some how stay though.

    • http://fxfp.com/ Alex F.

If you are talking about WP7 dev podcast, he only said “not needed” – nothing about the support (or lack of it).

  • Anonymous

I’ll hang on to my Focus for now but I have a feeling Nokia is going to put the hurt on Samsung.

  • Oshalabi9

As a 2nd generation windows phone already has a lot to offer. I think wp7.5 will be great. I think windows phone 8 will be the show stopper. I like both HTC and Sammy. But to me they have both dedicated resources to only one OS Android. They have a new phone coming out every week. And been though it’s not necessary to build a new phone every week it would be nice to see certain different types of support for WP7. For example show casing the phones in different events properly, showing future roadmaps, making upgrades flow easy, and so on. The HTC Mazaa came out for verizon and then nothing , no fan fare from verizon or HTC. For me as soon as Nokia comes out I’m getting the phone. There is a certain longevity and more of a resale value in a company like Nokia when their first WP will also have a historical value in many aspects. And to be able to trade and resale a Nokia phone will have the same market value as trading or reselling an iPhone if not more within time.

    • http://twitter.com/TheeBladeOGrass Michael Pendergraft

You’re right, they are all-in on Android, but I just thought of something reading your post. Windows 8 on the Galaxy Tab 10.1! (or future iteration of the Tab) But I know Windows 8 is over a year away so now I’m just toturing myself!

Nokia just bring your A game.

WOW! First HTC and now Samsung with their new concept/phone.
Nokia I am counting on you to convince me that YOU will come out something that will be much better than (left over droid scraps from HTC), same with Samsung(scraps from GalaxyS).
Samsung with horrible firmware that can’t get upgrades, HTC with camera that sucks big time.
Nokia, you have the winning ticket here.

People need to stop calling Mango a .5 update. Clearly, typographically 7.1 looks better and that´s what Microsoft is going for.

On the topic of Samsung Galaxy S II, I can´t wait. If the Nokia phone doesn´t have dual-core, Samsung will be my choice. It also has a very good graphics-chip on the SoC.

    • Jimmy JoeBob

Actually it is 7.5 … I have the developer version (i.e. “official” mango beta). It says in the About page on the phone: “Software: Windows Phone 7.5″

  • Mr_Santos

This is pretty old news actually. Actually, the Focus 2 is new news, but over at samfirmware.com a few months ago they released a few product codes of devices that Samsung are working on and will be released in the future:
One of the new codes was GT-I8710, and considering the Omnia 7 is GT-I8700, the I8710 has been unoficially rumoured to be the Omnia 8, ie the next Samsung Windows Phone, which I can’t wait to get some photos leaked.
Most probably it will be a variant of the i937, much how the Focus and Omnia are a variant of each other in a different casing.

But don’t keep your hopes up about the hardware configuration though. Most likely it will be an MSM 8X55 SoC and will be running at 1.5GHz, much like how the rumoured Eternity is rumoured to run. No dual-core here. At 1.5GHz on the new chip, it will be the equivalent of around 1.7-1.8GHz on the current QSD 8250 chip. Expect an updated RAM to 512MB, up from 256MB that is currently on the Focus and Omnia 7. And to differentiate their products from the rest of the WP7 manufacturers, esepcially Nokia, expect a Super AMOLED Plus screen of 4.2-4.3 inches to attract customers and keep the price slightly lower. And Don’t forget a FF camera.

As with the Focus and Omnia 7, expect the I8710 and i937 to run the same specs but also as the Focus and Omnia 7, expect both devices to vary in design as one will be for the North American market (i937) and the other will most definately be for the European market (I8710).
