Seeqpod Mobile for Windows Mobile full review

(Admin:This article is the first by Marios96, one of our new Associate Editors)

When searching to find news and information about SeeqPod Mobile, the first result that I run into was ‘SeeqPod Makes Your Windows Mobile Device a Streaming iPod’. That sounds promising I thought, but will this Windows Mobile adaptation of SeeqPod service succeed on what it claims to do? Let’s find out…

Installing

Downloading and installing the 4MB program took only a few minutes. All I had to do was, type seeqpodmobile.com in my Touch Pro browser and choose the appropriate cab file to download. The program supports only QVGA and VGA devices thus users of XPERIA X1, TOUCH HD should probably wait a bit more to use the service.

When you run the program for the first time it will ask you for your email (don’t forget to sign up in www.seeqpod.com if you haven’t already) and although it took three or four times to accept mine, once it worked I was ready to use SeeqPod Mobile.

Interface

The interface is pretty straight forward. It consists of four tabs: Search Results, Featured, Current Playlist and Player. You have the search function on the left soft key and the Options menu on the right. And while the program lacks any gesture controls, with all its simplicity, it scores high marks in one hand use. Even though some of the icons are rather small, the ones that matter most have the appropriate size. And if I, a first time user of SeeqPod managed to have my playlist up and running in a couple of minutes, then the program scores high marks in ease of use as well. The 10 color themes and the 6 player skins will also appeal to many users of this program, even though they don’t really change much of the appearance of the program.

Content

Unlike the desktop version of SeeqPod, this mobile version supports only audio, text, PodLists, and related Wikipedia articles, excluding any kind of video content that desktop users enjoy. However, if what you are looking is a music  database that holds every single song you can think off then, surely SeeqPod doesn’t disappoint. For my first search I tried the singer ‘Dan Wilson’, which resulted to 482 results. First up was the Wikipedia article about the artist and then few hundred songs and custom podlists followed. Here is exactly where the main disadvantage of the SeeqPod Mobile is. Since the database is so big, the program should have the option to select where and what you are searching for. Instead the program lists the results in a seemingly unsorted way that slows you down when creating a playlist or choosing a specific song. Other than that, I have to admit that, someone should try really hard to get a ‘no results found’ message from the program.

Performance

Don’t expect SeeqPod Mobile to be blistering fast. It is after all a multimedia program that uses the internet to stream songs. It will take some time to browse through the result pages and it will take even more time to switch to landscape. SeeqPod Mobile That said, managing a playlist is smooth and fast. And as far as the song playback goes, even on my slow wifi connection the songs played almost instantly with great sound and absolutely no buffering.

Overall Impressions

SeeqPod Mobile is a unique windows mobile application that truly does what it is meant for. It will indeed transform your windows mobile phone to a streaming iPod, but only if you have a device with plenty of RAM and an unlimited data plan. If you tick both of these boxes and want to be able to have instant access to almost 13 millions tracks and files then this mobile version of SeeqPod will not let you down. And for the $9.95 it costs it will feel like a steal.

PROS

Easy access to thousands of SeeqPod’s daily updated Featured PodLists
Interchangeable color themes and player skins
Easy to use – one-hand usability
Great streaming performance

CONS

Slow overall performance – requires plenty of RAM
Where are the gestures?
No WQVGA or WVGA support
No selective search
Playback stopsas soon as the screen goes off – thanks Josh

It really means a lot to me…

  • daveloft

it appears to be free at the moment and will be till Dec 21st

  • Josh

This has to be one of the best app i have seem in awhile.

  • Josh

Maybe not so much after using it for a minutes, the thing will stop playing if the screen go off..so it will use up even more battery than what’s already using from the data streaming.

  • daveloft

Yeah I have that same problem, great concept but the program needs a lot of work.

  • http://www.wmpoweruser.com marios96

Yes the program still needs some job, but it is a (huge) step on the right direction. The sound quality and the plethora of results is just overwhelming…

And do not forget that playback stops even in Windows Media Player (and every other multimedia program) when the screen goes off.

Hi everyone – Jim from SeeqPod here. It was I and my longtime friend and colleague Steve that designed and engineered the SeeqPod Mobile app.

There have also been three new releases with some significant upgrades and improvements to the SeeqPod Mobile for Windows Mobile application since the initial version was first released in late December.

We’ve released version 1.3, which also allows new users to download the app and use it free for 7 days. It became clear that it was a lot easier to just get it into peoples’ hands to try it out than to try to explain all the things it does and enables.

Some users that had version 1.0 had registration problems that were fixed in version 1.1. And our new version 1.3 provides a way for users that do hard resets of their phones to easily re-authenticate the app by simply launching it and re-entering their registration email address. The reason we have the authentication process in place is that in preparation for some impressive capabilities down the road, we’ve built a purchase transaction capability into our app and infrastructure and every copy of the application needs to be secure and authenticated to registered users.

Here’s the SeeqPod Mobile revision history so far…

    SeeqPod Mobile Revision History
    Version 1.3 (January 20, 2008)

    * Improved memory footprint by reducing memory usage
    * Introduced 7 day free trial version
    * When on New Search dialog, if the phone’s built-in soft-keyboard (display keyboard) is brought up, it’s automatically removed if the user clicks the Return Key and after search is completed
    * Added a “remove item from playlist” option on the Current Playlist screen when clicking any AudioPod item
    * Playlists are automatically saved after any add or delete operation

    Version 1.2 (January 9, 2009)

    * Modify connection mechanism for internet connection to improve performance
    * Fixed a bug causing some AudioPods to display incorrect artist and album information
    * Fixed a bug causing the Cancel button on the About page to close the application
    * Clicking anywhere on the mini-player at the bottom of the list screens goes to the Player screen
    * Now allow users to search for All Result Types together or just AudioPods, PodLists, or TextPods separately
    * Now launches properly on wide VGA phones (Display size: 800 pixels x 480 pixels) such as the HTC touch HD
    * When audio is playing, phone will not enter into power saving mode

    Version 1.1 (December 28, 2008)

    * Application now digitally signed with a trust certificate
    * Support for automatic version update notifications
    * Added gesture support (directional swipes) for quicker navigation (for touchscreen phones)
    * Memory optimizations
    * Fragile glass installed on the Player. If you touch it, it might crack! :^)

    Version 1.0 (December 19, 2008)

    * Initial Public Release

So you can see that we’re aggressively working to improve the app and make it better for users. I’m running it mostly on an HTC Touch Pro (via AT&T), and have been using it at parties with a video-out adapter to large flatscreen HDTVs. We’ve discovered that HTC has these adapaters on backorder (perhaps they didn’t anticipate something like our app!), so we located a guy in Texas that makes them. Somehow we’ve got to get HTC to replenish their inventory, as it’s pretty cool to have the app displayed large and let people come up and add audio tracks to the playlist like a jukebox.

The SeeqPod Mobile Team is always happy to hear from you. Let us know how you’re using SeeqPod Mobile and be sure to tell your friends! We’re also looking for reviews and videos showing SeeqPod Mobile in action and will be linking our favorites on our site, so send us your links!
