Seesmic drops support for Blackberry, focussing on popular platforms like Windows Phone 7

In a note posted on their website Seesmic has announced that they will be dropping support for RIM’s embattled Blackberry platform.

They write:

broken_blackberry-180x300Important update for Blackberry users

Blackberry users, we have important news we would like to share:

Effective June 30th, Seesmic will discontinue support for Blackberry in order to focus development efforts on our most popular mobile platforms: Android,iOS and Windows Phone 7.

We encourage those effected by this change to try out Seesmic for Android, iOS and Windows Phone 7, as well as Seesmic Desktop and Web.

Sincerely,

Team Seesmic

RIM, who lost half of its market capitalization over the last 6 months, and which is now worth less that $13.5 billion, is believed to have lost 18% of its US subscribers in the last year, and is one of the most fragmented platforms, with numerous versions of its operating system in circulation, making it one of the most complex and expensive platforms to support.

The withdrawal of support by developers will be seen as another blow against the company, and will do nothing to halt the slide in the share price of the company, already down nearly 30% since last week.

windows phone 7 will steal a lot of blackberry’s marketshare. (android wont because it is unsecure/unencrypted for businesses, and fragmented = crap for support).

Unfortunately, the iPhone is getting a lot of support from businesses as a replacement for Blackberries as well.

Yes, but companies aren’t going to want to play by Apple’s rules. Microsoft has a thriving enterprise base already. People think they’re late, but it doesn’t matter because their productivity products will work the best because of all of the integrated features. All Microsoft has to do is get all the security and policy stuff in WP7 like in WM, that most enterprise mangers will require.

          Yup.

The iPhone and iPad are, at the end of the day, toys – when it comes to the business world.

Maybe those security updates are apart of the 500 new features!?

            Hopefully :)

I disagree. As many more business’ are already adopting iPhones. Companies are already playing by Apple’s rules. MS has rules too.

I’m not saying they will have no role in enterprise. Some companies already work in an Apple ecosystem, it is possible. I’m just saying it’s a known fact that Microsoft plays better with partners than Apple does.

wait Microsoft … secure? isn’t that a paradox? The only thing that makes WP7 safe is the fact that it doesnt do anything, a brick is also very secure

Your dense skull is pretty secure too. Go back to your fanboy site.

what fansite would that be? and if personal attacks is the best argument you have, you have already lost

I feel sorry for RIM. Even though I’m happy that they’re letting other OSes like windows phone gain marketshare, I feel like they’re just one of those unforgettable, historic names that can’t dissappear at the same time.

At least someone is saying WP7 is popular =)

Fragmentation is a killer. Ultimately, that’s why I dumped my BB.

Hopefully Microsoft knows all of this and maintains their OS well.

    • Guest

Do you mean you had a fragmented BB phone? Before or after you dumped it?

Black Berry Bold 9000 was the best phone email/text phone ever! RIM got caught up just like Microsoft did with Windows Mobile. They are trying to update a OS to do things it just wasn’t built to do. MS seen the error in their old OS and then changed, and it will survive. I’m not sure RIM will be able to do the same.

WP7 popular???? Seem to miss Symbian in the calculation .. still the most used OS.. (for now)

    • Anonymous

Symbian is falling off of a cliff.

wp7 popular for the Seesmic app. l2comprehend

And they are probably looking into the future. wp7 will only grow, BB will only slowly wither away.

Market cap down 1B in a week how hilarious. They’ll be down to Motorola’s 7 B in no time.

Surur, I think you’ve taken this a bit out of context. In the title you say “focussing on popular platforms like WP7″

They in no way implied that WP7 is a more popular platform. They only implied that they have a larger WP7 user base than a Blackberry user base.

    • Anonymous

I dont see anything wrong with that. It says right there in their notice that, “…in order to focus development efforts on our most popular mobile platforms: Android,iOS and Windows Phone 7″

      • Aceofspades25

Yes that’s exactly what I meant. “OUR most popular platforms” is quite different to implying that WP7 is THE most popular platform of the two. (This seems to be implied by the articles title and is quite different to what Seesmic was saying)
