Simple trick to force the Mango update

With the Windows Phone 7.5 update only being rolled out to 10% of users initially the impatient many many want an early piece of the action.

It seems the old “disconnect the internet“ trick from the NoDo days also works for forcing Zune to deliver the Mango update to your phone.

The step by step instructions are:

Connect your Windows Phone to a PC and launch the Zune software
Click on Settings/Update. Allow the software to tell you whether an update is available. If so, skip this guide. If not continue to the next step.
Click the check for update button again, and this time immediately disconnect your computer from the internet. Do this by pulling the Ethernet cable, disabling Wi-Fi, etc.
Wait 30 seconds or so and you should receive a notification that an update is available.
Now reconnect to the internet and continue with the update process through the Zune software.

Seems simple enough. Let us know if it works for you.

This did work for me, the timing is a bit iffy, but worked… Mango is FINALLY on the way for me.

I just got mangoed!! using the HD7 on TMOBILE US.. the steps worked. had to use the dedicated FN (F8) key on my laptop to disable WiFi after like 10 tries. But it worked when I noticed I was getting the timing wrong and had to hit the F8 key first before clicking on ”update” on the Zune Software! the page stating I had a phone update popped up afterwards and I clicked to update. It updated to 7403 and immediately did a search for another update and started updating to 7720. Right now am quite delighted and am going to dive right into mango to see for myself what its all about.

Oh and I did not do the airplane mode… You have to be connected to pass the internet verification, disconnect before the update is held, then connect before the error message. Realoly Iffy but it worked.

Hey, it worked for me! I’m in Montreal, with a Telus LG Optimus 7. I was on 7.0.7403, and it did a three-step upgrade, lasting about an hour.

I have a couple of music files on my phone under that length, but they still give me no ringtone option. You’d think a phone named after a composer would let you have music as a ringtone!? Not too happy with the Mozart handset to be honest =(

Dont know if this is the reason, but after many unsuccesful attempts it finally worked only once I turned off wireless connection on the phone. Then clicked the update button, removed the network cable almost at the same time and then turned the phone wireless back on.

This doesn’t work for me. I’ve tried it many times and still no luck. I even tried the airplane mode. I have an HD7 and I already have that 7932 update. Anybody have any other suggestions? maybe I’m just doing it wrong. UGH!

Hi Guys i had to literally do this continually for 4 days to get this to work – if anyone else is struggling with an inconsistent internet connection, i would advise counting the seconds it takes to tell you that the phone is up to date, then let the update search for exactly half of those seconds, then deactivate your internet. hope my frustrating experience can help others!

as of now it still works with my samsung focus, it took ALOT of tries but I put the phone in airplane mode, clicked update after restarting zune and disconnected wifi from my computer, this first update is underway!

Awesome! Had to try it twice. The first time, I got the pop-up message on my phone, but when I plugged it in, there was no update. The second time, I got the update message on both my phone and Zune.

I tried this about 10 times and couldn’t get it to work. Then I saw the suggestions to turn off wifi on the phone, and 3 updates later I’m running Mango! Thanks! I wish I found this post a couple of weeks ago.

11/10/11 No update from O2 UK yet for either my contract HTC Mozart7 or my HTC HD7….. followed the instructions and both updated first time… We are now both up and running on Mango at last…Many thanks

Worked for me after much trial and error. I really doubted this method but it really does work.

Orange UK-branded HTC 7 Mozart. Updated from 7392 to 7403 and now it automatically detected 7720. Currently stuck at 23% though :S

How did I do it?
- Put airplane mode on first.
- Turn WiFi off phone.
- Plug phone into USB whilst its switched on.
- Zune loads up and accesses the phone.
- Go to Settings–>Update – no updated available!
- Click Linking, then click click Update again…
- *CRUCIAL* as you click Update this 2nd time, allow the ‘Checking for updates’ progress bar to go through 1 to 2 cycles before you unplug your ethernet cable.
- Within seconds you REALLY are prompted to get the first 7403 update.

I put my Verizon HTC Trophy on airplane mode, and followed the steps. Make sure you pull the cable out IMMEDIATELY as soon as the update search starts! and make sure to plug your cable back in before the update!

Finally got this to work on my Sister in Laws new HD7S! Took 2 days of trying. I was about to give up but then bam! Airplane mode on the phone and then hitting the hardware wireless enable disable seemed to do the trick. I counted 1…2 then hit the button on my laptop.
