Snow Rally City Stage racing game reviewed – conclusion: Smartphones need D-pads

BestWMApps have reviewed Snow Rally City Stage, and besides lamenting the poor graphics, short game play and price, what is really obvious from the video is how difficult game place is on a device without a hard D-pad.

As far as we know D-pads are now completely passé and no-one is any longer interested in placing them on any device. And of course, this is a real shame.

The iPhone doesn't have a d-pad so obviously no other phone needs a d-pad, silly.

Also, that wonderful squircle that the Zune used to have, where you could either swipe or click? That I was hoping could show up on phones (at smaller size)? Don't need that either

no…developers should release more polished products…..you got to go forward…..not backwards.

    • Baz

How is it improved, or "going forward"? how is d-pad use, where you can see the whole screen without obstruction and don't pollute the screen with grease "going backwards" ?

There is a reason why game consoles still use some sort of directional input device, as opposed to willing your direction by touching the teevee or picking up the console and tilting it left and right.

Even the Wii, with its highly unusual input system (compared to its peers) STILL has two directional inputs — the analog and standard D-Pad.

Give me my D-Pad back, damn it.

It IS time for developers to acknowledge that most current devices dont have dpads and develop games accordingly otherwise if the control scheme is not well thought out they game wont be well received and ultimately generate fewer sales. It does seem that WM game devs are just too lazy to design better games.

if i could get a dpad added to my hd2 i would say no due to lost screen size. i think an attachment of some sort using the micro USB could work though.

Hence the Xperia line of phones, and as far as I know the Omnia line of WM phones. Isn't it really just an HTC thing to not put in DPADs anymore? i guess all the current designs were made thinking that they'd have WM7 by now.

I never really got on all that well with gaming on a D-pad. Yes it's better than nothing, but far from ideal.

There are Bluetooth gamepads, so when you want to play games you just take that along.

Perhaps there's an opening for someone to make a really small foldable one; I've seen small ones but perhaps not small enough to carry around all the time.

YES! The phucking iPhone ruined it for everyone! We need d-pads, they're useful for more than just games, too. There are only so many games you can design when there's no dpad (or buttons, another iPhone trend ruining everything).

  • no dpad

it's not a dpad we're missing for games, it's a capacitive screen with multi-touch. if you have a large screen with that ability then a stiff dpad is inferior. you can't do diagonal movements with a dpad, which is a MUST for many games, so it would be a step backwards to go back to a dpad.

WM is not good for games!! Didn't you notice that many devices lag when you touch on the screen?
This does not occur when using a dpad..

While it is possible to create games that don't require hardware buttons, this is a very limiting factor. Look at PSP with its hardware buttons and even joystick. And you can press them all simultaneously and do it with very high rate. No haptic feedback can help to recerate this on a touch screen.

I need some kind of d-pad or trakcball abd some other extra buttons including maybe scrolling wheel and harware keys lock button (like on PSP or on old Lenovo WM phones). But all new Windows Mobile phones have less buttons.

Soft keys cost less to produce but also they do not break and don't have to be repaired.

I did not purchase HTC HD2 mostly because it does not have hardware D-PAD or at least optical sensor as in Samsung i900. There are cases where having hardware buttons helps a lot in navigationg on web-page or in normal PPC application with lots of controls.

It's funny when people are bitching about a phone NOT being able to be a GAME console either. Really funny. Maybe I should write a letter to Sony to tell them to add phone capabilities and touchscreen to their PSP. Gee, I wonder what they will say…

  • PTrizzy

Or better yet, we should all ask Nokia how their N-Gage is doing.

Wow, so many naysayers. At some point all the software and internal/performance advancements with phones will begin to max out and there will be a return to focusing on actual usability and functionality.

I think a more usable phone is one you don't have to look at as much. Whether you're driving, walking, sitting at a desk, or whatever, chances are you're doing something else besides just using your phone. So the less time you have to look at the screen to see what you're doing the better.

Unfortunately, it will probably take Apple coming out with a phone with more buttons or a keyboard before we see any kind of sweeping change.
