Sony Ericsson disses Windows Phone 7, says it “isn’t as good” as Android

imageBert Nordberg, CEO of Sony Ericsson, does not think too much of Windows Phone 7.

Head of the loss-making company, which saw its market share drop from 4.3% 2 years ago to 1.7% this year, spoke in passing about the OS to the Wall Street Journal.

When asked about their willingness to adopt Windows Phone 7, like many other OEMs rather being exclusively Android Bert responded:

Mr. Nordberg: At this point I wouldn’t feel comfortable investing in a platform that isn’t as good as the one that we currently use. Therefore we have remained with Android, but I am quite curious about Windows Phone.

He goes on to explain that Sony Ericsson is always behind with technology such as LTE and Dual Core chipsets because “no guarantee that consumers will buy, just because we develop it” and observed that they over-estimated their chances when it came to dominating the Android market. The company intended to become “the world’s largest maker of Android handsets”, but has so far managed only 11% of the market.

I think if Sony Ericsson does manage to push out a Windows Phone, we will probably not buy is as the company is not quite as good as the companies we use at the moment.

No, you’re actually in the wrong. Morteen pointed out a huge flaw in Surur’s article, which I also would have pointed out. News is supposed to be presented without an opinion, unless it is an editorial.

            I wouldn’t mind seeing a Sony WP7.

Also, it’s not like Sony will outright say “Android sucks, we’re thinking about switching to WP7.” Them saying that they’re quite curious about wp7 is a really good thing, meaning they might make a device soon.

Def. not the company to be all high and mighty at this point in time. SE was doing real well when their system was rockin’ but ever since then. They’ve fallen behind.

How can he even talk when half of their phone line ups aren’t even supported anymore without any updates coming their way? They just build new models, that’s the only way to get the newest system.

As a whole ecosystem, which includes Samsung, HTC and the myriads of Chinese manufacturer. As a whole.
But for SE alone against the other manufacturers…

Not that using WP alone would make them better against other WP or Android manufacturers though.

Maybe they will jump into the bandwagon if the brand building has been done and they only need to ride on the popularity.
Like, imagine if iOS is opened for OEM to use earlier. How many would jump over from Android to the platform backed by Apple’s brand.

Quite frankly, I’m tired of all the bashing of Android. Sure, it’s a mess of developers having seperate ideas – but the handset makers are free to do a lot of things. Such as actually being allowed to use a dual-core, S3-based processor.

Quite frankly, I envy android for having the best phone available – Samsung Galaxy SII (and later the LTE-model with NFC). I’m just not that impressed with the hardware coming for Windows Phone at the moment.

Seriously. Are all Windows Phone-lovers ignorant people? Ignorant to the fact that the hardware part of their ecosystem is moving faster than what Microsoft seemingly want them to do.

Yes, I love the platform just as much as you. But it’s clearly not because of the hardware your system is stable. Had Microsoft invested in dual-core, more ram, higher resolution screens – the OS still would be stable for the end user. And even faster. Your “oh, my OS still can run fast on old hardware” is hardly a point; with a new dual core processor, it would still finish it’s workloads faster

          Software – top 2
          Hardware – mediocre

That’s a fact, and it’s hurting the potential of the Windows Phone platform.

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KTAHVKS2RNDWTQPHQEJALLRNEQ Adam Paris

And i get tired of people focusing on hardware instead of software. People who use Windows Phone dont care as much about hardware as android lovers. I dont see iPhone users complain about not having dual-core.

Hardware is for nerdy people who get an orgasm of extreme hardware.

          • Anonymous

Dual-core iPhone coming out tomorrow. I’m talking about new phones released this fall of course, such as Titan. One year ago, it wasn’t possible to have a dual-core. Now it is though.

          • Anonymous

Why are you so desperate for dual core. What are you running on Windows Phone that requires that dual core so badly.

If you can’t think if one then you are wasting your time.

All apps and games I have tried so far on WP7 since mango perform smoothly. The emphasis si on the developer to create a smooth user friendly app rather that create something crap and battery draining just because it is backed by a dual core.

          • Anonymous

Why are you so desperate in convincing me to go for a single core chip?

In an ecosystem, there is need for diversity in hardware. Meaning that not everybody want a two year old snapdragon processor in their cell phone.

Please explain to me which apps/games are really using any of the cell phones resources of Windows Phone?

Why you don’t see (but you will) is that when dual-core is finally brought to Windows Phone, apps will finish it’s processes faster, multitasking will be enabled for more than just five apps, cpu clock ratio will go down. Battery usage will be streamlined.

          • Anonymous

I am not desperate to convince you to use a single core chip. Couldn’t care less what you use. Its is different story when you keep on complaining about lack of dual core when you obviously don’t understand the platform. You are thinking too much towards Android and if that they case then Windows Phone is not for you.

There is a balance in windows phone and it is geared towards a smooth experience. No matter what the user does they still have a smooth experience and good battery life.

Opening up to dual core, maxing the multi-tasking to the memory’s limit, having back-ground apps needlessly eating cpu cycles in the background. This is stuff you find on Android and dual core helps in attempting to mask the degradation in user experience due to these things. Windows Phone attempts to address it in it architecture rather than just through hardware at it.

Again I am not trying to convince you to buy single core but don’t try and come on here attempting to convince us that Windows Phone is hurting because it doesn’t have dual core. If its hurting it NOT because it doesn’t have dual core.

          • Anonymous

Clearly, I’m talking about raising the limit from 5 to maybe the double of that. You seem to exaggerate what I’m saying to make a point. But it’s not working I’m afraid.

Also having more ram doesn’t drain a lot of battery when the app is in a sleep state.

You act as though I want Windows Phone to become Android. No.

I want the Windows Phone ecosystem to use innovating hardware ideas, co-existing with the brilliant software.

You seem to me like I am attacking your livelihood. You are of the impression that Windows Phone is feature complete, and perfect as-is. I promise you this: after you’ve tried using the browser of a dual-core Windows Phone, you don’t want to go back.

          • Anonymous

I know 2 people that have SGS2 and I have used it. It is a good phone but the effort you are making here to convince people that Windows Phone is lacking due to no dual core is ridiculous.

Nothing you have said has proved your point.

The apps that I run all run fine. I have noticed some slight lag when playing PvZ at times but would I trade that for less battery life NO.

Would I want more than 5 apps directly multitasked when the remaining only have to wake from a sleep state? No not really. How much multi-tasking are you really doing on a phone? As always it would be nice but it if it meant a degradation in UX then forget it.

          • Anonymous

You wouldn’t need to change the CPU to have more apps waiting in the background – they don’t consume any CPU time at all, more RAM would be required. Microsoft aren’t going to have some phones with 5 apps some with 10 so it’s entirely moot.

          • Anonymous

“Microsoft aren’t going to have some phones with 5 apps some with 10″.

I think it’s quite the opposite. As long as ALL WP7 devices run buttery smooth (as opposed to a few Android phones) then your personal desire to have a dual core, will not, in the very least, influence anyone one here.

          • http://chmun77.myopenid.com/ WP7Crap

But why limited yourself to only single core?? Just because WP7 WILL NOT EVER has multiple cores?

If the current apps are so good and running smoothly, why do MS bother to do h/w accelerated browsers?! That’s because h/w drives the s/w. Are you going to stuck with single core forever? Not me.

Quick, choose one of the two following options:

            1) Dual-core phone that is slow, jerky and crashes several times a day, with horrendous battery life;

            2) Single-core phone that is fast, smooth, and runs for weeks without a problem… with outstanding battery life.

Android dual-core is #1, Windows Phone is #2.  Most users want #2 — speeds and feeds are for hard-core tech geeks who want bragging rights, not for everyday people who want capability, performance and battery life.

          • Anonymous

this seems like the hardware, software talk/quarrel Steve Jobs and Bill Gates had. it came down to the point that both are very important to the end result…..why do you think macs get the reputation of being stable and high performing, while windows got the ridicule of being crashy and buggy?

great hardware and great software gives the best of both worlds. I’m a windows user, and a windows phone user and I would love to have some very good hardware that comes along with this great software I’m using too.

most of the arguments here against hardware is like saying: my car can go 85mph while the speed limit is 80. so why would I need a car that can go 160mph?
the answer: because the car that can go as fast as 160mph can also go from 1mph to 60mph in a much shorter time than your old 85mph car.

if a bad driver sits in that 160mph car, he will crash (defeat the purpose of having a fast car)
and if a good driver sits around the 85mph car too long, his skills will get rusty.
a good driver needs a good car to prove and build upon his skills and potential, while a good car needs a good driver to show its true performance.

good software needs good hardware, and good hardware needs good software.

You and Mort are trolling pretty hard. Current single core iPhone 4 is still the best selling phone in the world and has the highest customer satisfaction rating. Even if they are joining the dual core race its only cause people like you get caught up in the numbers game. I’d prefer great performance and battery life anyday over a numbers game in hardware. Currently WP7 has that. Oh and what is this Windows 3rd update, how many did ios and android have before they were ready for dual core? Give me a break.

          • Anonymous

How the fuck am I trolling. I’m talking about my want for dual-core processing power with Windows Phone.

Distributing load across several cores (ie. internet browsing) will increase battery life, and reduce heat.

          • Anonymous

Don’t believe the hype. In many circumstances a dual core will use more power than a single core assuming the same architecture.

            http://www.tested.com/news/dual-core-vs-single-core-arm-what-does-an-extra-core-really-get-you/2337/

only a few circumstances it will save you battery.

Are you telling me that between a single and dual core phone with same architecture and battery size and normal usage the dual core with out last the single core?

          • Anonymous

A lot of this is up to the software utilizing the extra cores. Together with smart cycle stepping and distribution of cores, there’s another image in hand.

I’m not saying that dual-core will use less power in any scenario without optimizations. But for certain (important) tasks there is a lot to gain. Especially in terms of performance and distribution of load.

The question is did single core hurt iPhone sales? Will the iPhone 4 run iOS 5 with a good user experience?

Dual core is not the main point. Getting the software correct and efficient is.

You seem to be missing the point.

You seem to be missing the fact that your statement would’ve been correct one year ago, not in 2011. iPhone 4 was released in 2010. There were no dual-core processors available for mass-production in cell phones then. Now, there are.

if a bad driver sits in that 160mph car, he will crash (defeat the purpose of having a fast car)
and if a good driver sits around the 85mph car too long, his skills will get rusty.
a good driver needs a good car to prove and build upon his skills and potential, while a good car needs a good driver to show its true performance.

good software needs good hardware, and good hardware needs good software.

I find it amazing how they ONLY refer to the latest android flavor of the week which is not much different than the latest android flavor of last week. Bottom line hardware is one thing, android os is flat out trash.

      • Anonymous

Hardware hardware hardware. Please explain why my ‘inferior’ and older WP7 device doesn’t crash, slow down and have choppy scrolling compared with more powerful Android devices.

      • http://twitter.com/Arbeitsheld_ Julian Bickelmann

        Hardware isn’t important at all…
It’s not like you need a dual core processor to play mobile games, thats just bullshit. The software matters, and if you look at the poorly performing dual core android phones, its clear which software is better.

        • Anonymous

Please try Samsung Galaxy SII before talking. If you don’t think that’s competition for Windows Phone to beat, then you’re just stupid.

          • Anonymous

SGS2 with 1.2GHz dual core performs similarly in smoothness to a 1GHz single core Windows Phone. Am I missing something?

          • Anonymous

You are talking about solely the UI smoothness when you are talking about performance?

Thank you for participating in this discussion.

          • Anonymous

No I am talking about overall performance in terms of UX which is more than just UI.

So are you telling me Androids UX performance doesn’t degrade and requires Task Managers to try and maintain this?

Thanks for your pointless discussion you are not converting and impressing anyone.

          • Anonymous

I’m not trying to convert anyone. But Windows Phone isn’t perfect as you think – even the UX. My iPhone 4 is far from perfect.

Go out and smell the real world.

You deferring using new hardware as pointless discussion says more about you than about the platform. Android is in a high pace, so is the iOS platform.

Windows Phone on 1 year old hardware (where in the fact the processor is over 2 years) isn’t perfect. That’s why phones made for Mango is coming. That’s why dual-core processors and better integrated graphics are on the way for the platform. Only problem is, the technology is already here, can Windows Phone keep up the pace?

          • Anonymous

Dunno why people are being so hostile to you.  MS would do right by getting behind dual cores.  A well thought out system that could target modern CPU/GPUs with better graphics, but downgrade for the single core 1GHz phones would be awesome.

Handle it the same way it’s handled on PCs.  Provide the assets, then based on the phone model, give the performance it needs.

For example, I’d LOVE a version of Hydro Thunder GO that made use of a more powerful processor.

While WP7 does operate smoothly with relatively ancient hardware, making it take advantage of the latest and greatest is a good idea.  It would also jumpstart it as a mobile gaming platform.

UI is all you care? Cap WP7 play video formats, and I mean OTHER available video formats like on PC like Android? Of course not! SGS2 on the other hand, play HD movies without a glitch!

ilomilo on WP7 is already feeling the lags on a single core. Try harder WP7.

          • Anonymous

Where did I say UI. UX goes beyond UI.

Go back to your task killers please. You can run one core just killing tasks and the other for everything else.

OEM’s have the same freedom to build for windows phone as they do with android…. Microsoft only outline minimum hardware requirements so they can have a benchmark to write software…. unlike android where each OEM develop a phone and the software isn’t optimise properly for hardware. i have a galaxy s right now and is the worst android experience i have ever had…. i’ve used the G1 and mytouch 3g, both performed better than the Galaxys so better hardware can be renders useless if the software isn’t optimised for the hardware….

      • Anonymous

You do, of course, realize that the Focus S IS the Galaxy SII version of Windows Phone?

        • Anonymous

          No dual core.

          • http://twitter.com/MaulerX MaulerX

WP7, quite simply, does not need it. Android needs all the processing power it can get to move all that bloatware. The fact that the Mango update runs better than most Android phones with dual core (on last years single core phones to boot) is a testament to Microsofts software prowess. At this point, and judging by your comments, I would recommend you by an Android phone of your choice and be done with it.

Really?  So, other than your own bias, what exactly makes the Samsung devices “terrible”?  I compare my Focus to my wife’s iPhone 4 and my dive buddy’s Droid X and find it vastly superior to both.  So, what’s your issue?

      • Anonymous

Have I attacked your preference? I have stated mine. People are allowed to do that, no?

Samsung’s best effort though, are their Android devices.

Sorry but you spoke very matter-of-factly. Fact is, those devices are far from “terrible”. It’s all good that you don’t like them. But to call a future device “terrible” when they haven’t been officially unveiled by Samsung (Focus S) shows a bit of bias on your part. Personal preference or not.

Haha very true… Sony ericcson phones just aren’t as good as samsung or even HTC. I would take samsung simply because of their screen, but build quality goes to HTC.

      • http://trapchan.blogspot.com trapchan

Yeah, HTC have great build quality, Samsung even though plasticky, it’s still a good plastic, and have Super AMOLED.

And SE have … what ?? PSOne emulator ?

  • Anonymous

Well maybe if he looked at SE’s sales reports he would realize they might be a little behind and reconsider, anyway it’s their loss.

After a good time with their Walkman mobiles. SE now is a game of poorness. SE doesn’t play a roll in actual market.

I see more WP7 devicess in stores than sony ericsson here in Europe. We don’t need them but would be nice if they can make a budget phone or something better.

I really think Sony doesn’t want them to go WP xbox live vs Playstation suite.

Motorola said something similar in the past, ended up getting acquired, with all the associated layoffs and stripping down that entails. May not happen to SE but going by their current standing, cant rule out something along those lines. Its what happens when you put all your eggs in one basket.

It’s a shame Sony Ericson decided to go down the Android route. I had Sony Ericscons since the time they were only Ericson…. and when they decided Android, that is when I moved away from the platform. Not knowing about the Windows Phone and its potential, just shows how far from reality Mr. Bert is. What a shame! I actually preffered SE to Nokia.

    • http://chmun77.myopenid.com/ WP7Crap

Why? I think he is smart actually. He is looking at the fact, not just base on some fan boy comments. There are still lots of milestones away for WP7 to catch up with the big brothers. Why will, on the point of business, the company be spending efforts on such platforms?

  • Vasp

It’s a shame cos short of Nokia, I find the SE phone designs excellent for WP7.

  • http://www.about.me/AngeloGopaul Eingoluq

Sony Ericsson should talk, its the worst devision Sony owns. Their hardware dont live up to the quality of the Sony name IMHO. This is just to discredit the Xbox Live portion of WP7 because everyone knows PSN is not as good as Xbox Live.
What I wonder however, is what tune are they gonna play when Windows 8 comes along with Xbox integration. Would they say windows 8 is not as good as chrome OS?

  • http://twitter.com/domineus Malcolm Williams

Sony, how are those android sales again? Mediocre at best? Attributed to releasing a phone on the market with 1.6 when the de facto android was froyo.
You’d think with their failing marketshare they’d do…something

Makes no sense. They either take it all or nothing. MS will not and should not remove Xbox Live from the UX just because of Sony. Sony is not needed for WP to make an impact especially when there are tons of better companies vying to carry WP and who do not have any conflict of interest with anything on the OS. And the bad businessmen they are is making their boss come out to say such stupid comments about WP when he could have just said they are still evaluating or be vague as possible. As soon as I read the subject of thid article, I already knew it had something to do with the Xbox Live integratio, no two way around it. WP is correctly not as good, it is actually way better than Android and anything else on the market. Sony Ericsson phones are not on anyone’s top of the list anyway, so not having Sony on board is no biggie in any way.
Bottomline is they have to decide if the PC business will also conflict too since it will also have Xbox Live baked in. My guess is they will quit carrying Windows altogether and just be an Android-only business since it does not crry any gaming platform that will compete with them. Its Sony’s loss, no matter how you cut it.

Yeah .. maybe SE took phone gaming way too seriously … they forgot that people buy a phone because it’s a phone. If they really need a mobile console, they’ll get a PSVita / 3DS anyway.

Hilarious. The order is Windows Phone, iOS, Android. Windows Phone is hands-down the best-designed piece of software ever. There is nothing that can touch it for sheer lovely deliciousness. How anyone can describe Android as “better” than anything is beyond me. I would rather have one of the nice but sadly end-of-life webOS devices than any crap churned out by Google.
