Sprint Touch Pro vs AT&T Fuze

Slashgear has both a Sprint HTC Touch Pro and an AT&T HTC Fuze, and have been comparing them with each others. Surprisingly there are quite a large number of differences between the two devices.

Besides the obvious internal CDMA vs GSM differences, Slashgear noted the following differences:

AT&T HTC Fuze Sprint HTC Touch Pro
No belt holster belt holster
No number row Number row
More symbol and shortcut keys Less shortcut keys, no start or Ok key
5.8 oz 5.3 oz
6.6 hour talk time 4 hour talk time
Faster TouchFlo3D Less responsive TouchFlo3D
Louder speaker phone, but worse sound quality Less loud, but fuller and richer
Speaker at back Speaker on top
Diamond back Flat back
Shorter 2 mm longer
Squarer Rounder
All black Shiny chrome accents
Square stylus top Rounded stylus top
Less recessed action button More recessed action button
Push to talk button No Push to talk button

Whether these minor differences will make the decision to chose either device is unlikely, but it should be noted that there have been many reports of poorer video performance on the CDMA devices, and also poorer battery life, both which may be more significant.

After two days now with the Fuze, (my local store got TWO in on release day, and they held one of those for me) I must say I think I got lucky. I only wanted the AT&T version strictly for the fact that Sprint service in my town is not 3G, and likely won’t be for at least another year. (One might argue that they should just skip 3G and be a 4G wi-max pioneer like Baltimore…yeah right)

If the reports are right about the battery life, that is a huge difference. I do think I actually like the keyboard layout of the Fuze, and once I memorize where all the characters are, I think I’ll type faster than I’ve ever typed on a phone.

The 16 GB microSDHC card worked perfect, and mp3′s sound great in my truck. I do have one complaint about the dongle they give you for the 3.5 mm jack. It has a mini-USB plug on it, but IT’S NOT FOR A CHARGER? It’s only for headphones? I plugged my car charger into the dongle and nothing happened! Why would I plug a dongle in, just to plug mini-USB headphones into it? Why wouldn’t I just plug my headphones straight into the phone?

Okay, mini-rant done. The bottom line is that the Fuze is VERY impressive, and I can’t wait to start installing some killer apps on it. (C’mon Skyfire VGA support!)

Confirmed – Radio .cab installs great, and the radio works like a dream on it. Why didn’t they just include the software on the phone?

Consider this gadget. I have it and its great for in car audio.

Thanks for the idea, but I’d prefer my music to be straight into my aux jack, not limited by stereo bluetooth’s marginal sound quality.

I’ve already seen a cable that allows for everything the cable that was included should have provided – charging while using a 3.5mm jack.

I have no problem at all with the number pad arrangement on the Fuze. If you are inserting a phone number or a reg code (lots of that going on right now – I suspect) double-press the Function Key and – bang – in go the numbers!

I have seen both in use, Sprint’s version does have a few other advantages, small though they may be. The Touch Flo seems equally fast too me however Sprints version is more colorful and impressive vs the mono – chromatic type of AT&T, also under an equal plan to be able to use all its features, Sprints plans are cheaper. Just my few cents worth.

“”"” Ken Says: do have one complaint about the dongle they give you for the 3.5 mm jack. It has a mini-USB plug on it, but IT’S NOT FOR A CHARGER? It’s only for headphones? Ken, this might be a stupid question, but did you plug the charger into the mini usb on the bottom or the right side of the dongle. The charging mini-usb is on the bottom… the one on the right is for another headphone accessory. A BLUE led light will light up when it charges on the dongle!

I have to say, the battery life on my Fuze is horrible. The first day I had it, it only lasted until around 4pm, and I woke up at 6am that morning. I kind of expected more. Maybe it was because I had HSDPA on the whole day. I expect this will get better as I learn more about the phone, and get into more of a rhythm, instead of “oh hey, you got a new phone! IS THAT YOUTUBE?? let’s watch something!! *flicks keyboard in and out a few times* oh hey that’s cool!” from my friends every few minutes…

  • Ken

Yeah Ryan – I’m completely blind, and didn’t notice the 2nd USB port on the bottom for charging. Now the dongle is GREAT! LoL

I noticed it tonight at work, and found this thread just to make sure I didn’t let bad info stay out there, but you are right-on with your comment.
