Statcounter shows iOS losing market share, only Android and Windows Phone 7 growing

Mobile OS Market Share % Jan 11 Feb 11 Mar 11
SymbianOS 30.25 30.66 30.61
iOS 25.02 24.56 24.38
BlackBerry OS 15.03 14.52 14.1
Android 14.61 15.16 15.8
WinCE 0.37 0.35 0.32
webOS 0.25 0.21 0.19
Windows Phone 0.14 0.26 0.28
Maemo 5 0.13 0.12 0.11
Palm 0.02 0.01 0.01

The Statcounter data for March is now available, and it continues to show Windows Phone 7 growing , albeit at a slower pace than immediately after launch.

StatCounter  aggregates data from a sample exceeding 15 billion page views per month collected from across the StatCounter network of more than 3 million websites, and shows web activity of the installed base.

While WP7 growth was not as robust as immediately after launch, at 8% MoM it still exceeded the 4% of Android, and certainly beat the negative of all the other relevant mobile operating systems.

iOS, which includes iPhone, iPad and the iPod Touch, lost 1% market share, Blackberry 3%, Maemo 8% and of course webOS a massive 10%.

At the rate RIM is losing market share, it is likely the OS will have less than 10% by the end of the year, lending support to the IDC prediction that Windows Phone 7 will overtake the OS by 2015.

While at this rate of growth it will take a long time for Windows phone to close the installed base gap between it and its rivals, it does demonstrate that the OS remains a worthwhile investment for OEMS, and consumers continue to chose the OS at ever increasing numbers.

Well of course Android is gaining marketshare. Any swinging dick company that makes cell phones will put Android on all 75 of their products. Android is the new Windows.

I've been saying the same exact thing. Good to see someone agree.

Same here, except I think it's the "old" windows under a new name….

I've been saying the same thing as well. Similarity to Windows Mobile, both in operation and availability among numerous devices, was what made me jump to Android. And Windows Phone, even in it's current state and with little actual new hardware (basically similar devices on CDMA) basically has nowhere to go but up.

I'm amazed at the Symbian OS number. My Nokia N97 could barely load a web page.

Results for next month (April) will be interesting because of the new CDMA Windows Phone being released, and also the slew of new tablets (iPad 2, RIM PlayBook, and the countless Android tablets)

WP7 has a long road ahead. The OEMs need to start putting out new devices. There's just not a lot of variety right now, and having a choice of multiple form factors (with a consistent UX) is supposed to be one of the selling points of WP7.

Let's see if the recent advertising blitz on prime-time television will pay off. I have my doubts though because you still need to have the choices in hardware.

Remember these numbers do not reflect sales directly but installed base, so for example if there are 800 million smartphones in use, Windows Phone 7 would be 0.3% of that, about 2.5 million, and iPhone 200 million.

The numbers measure both installed base and the willingness of the users to use the web browser, but they are good at showing a trend.

Wow – Microsoft doesn't; even make the the chart (unless you count "other") when you switch to their US region on the report.

    • Sina

Um…WinCE…Windows Phone…? Do you know how to read?

      • the_other_brian

Touchy, touchy there fanboy. iHate the iEverything…but these numbers are nothing to jump for joy over. It's like being the skinniest person on the fat farm. Does anyone even notice? I've had my WP7 since December and have yet to come across anyone with one. It's either iJunk, Android or RIM.

        • lkl

That's the statement I say to people all the time. I don't know anyone with a WP7 phone. When I'm in Costo, Best Buy or any other store no one even knows anyone that has one. Now that's a real problem.

Bing is likely 2% worldwide. Google is extremely dominant internationally.

    • Denis J. Sharkaat

What I know from february data its; Google counts 65.6% of search engine market, while Yahoo 16.1% and Bing.com 13.1%.

      • http://wmpoweruser.com wmpoweruser

        In USA.

        • Denis J. Sharkaat

Hate the headlines then, because every single I've seen states "global share". :( Trying to find source of original info…

Yep, you're right, at least coming from comscore's results; http://www.comscore.com/index.php/Press_Events/Pr

Aren't Yahoo and Bing one big happy search family? Could you consider them one number?

I know two other people I work with who independently of me bought Windows Phones. One has the Focus like me and the other the LG. I've never seen another person with a Zune HD player, but for the short time Windows Phone has been out, and given there is no saturation advertising similar to Apple or Android, I think knowing at least 2 other WP users is pretty good.
