In a CNN interview Steve Ballmer has expressed confidence in Microsoft’s Windows Phone strategy, saying the first job was to reverse decline, but that, after a good reception from the so-called “blogosphere” he felt the OS would take off from there.

Do our readers share his confidence, or is the marketplace much too crowded already for yet another new entrant? Let us know below.

About Surur

Site Admin and Windows Phone enthusiast, he has been using Windows Mobile devices since before they were called PocketPC’s. He is currently sporting a HTC 7 Trophy.

It's not "yet another new entrant". Windows Mobile will obviously be put out to pasture a few months after WP7's release, and WP7 is the successor to WinMo.

Project Natal had a good reception from the so-called “blogosphere” too.

    And Kin.

How are they looking now? Generally not so great.

    • Surur

I’m not so sure about KIN’s reception :)

      • Fdo35

It's true that the KIN phones didn't sell that well, but it could be that a lot of people are holding out for something better, such as WP7. I'm suspecting this, because I've tried out the KIN phones before at Verizon stores/stands, and liked it, but prefered to wait for WP7. Just a possibility.

        • Fdo35

Yet another (more likely) reason could be that the KIN phones' target audiance was too specific. Not everyone (including me) like to use Facebook and Twitter.

      the kin not su much,

and Kinect is not even out yet so you can't really troll it down yet

      • Argh

Sure I can. Everyone who's seen it has commented on the lack of responsiveness. Last E3, it had looked incredible.

It will need to be very cheap to sell well, now.

where have you see those comments on kinect about it's responsiveness? I ask because I haven't seen those

Kin was panned (mostly for verizon price & data plans)

Natal was widely praised and it has NOT shipped yet.

      ROTF what a terrible post

Where's the rest of the interview? She was about to ask a good question, and then it cut off!

Unless Steve Ballmer has held off on announcing a major feature for Windows Phone 7 that their competition doesn't have, I can't see WP7 taking off at launch. It's not going to be anywhere near 600,000 phones in one day like the iPhone 4. But, he's the CEO, so he can't say that WP7 can't compete.

I will give Ballmer credit as he acknowledges that their mobile market share is bleeding, and his first step is to stop the decline. That's a big shift to from when he dismissed the iPhone at its launch. They say the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem…

WM still holds about 18% of the smart phone market in US and has very loyal fan base. If WP7 can impress some new customers than it can really take off.

But, how many loyal WinMob users – besides me – are heading for OS with more features than WinPhone 7?

With any new users WP7 gets, they still won't replace the long-time users – like me – who are off to find a phone OS as powerful and flexible as WinMob 6.5

I wonder how many long-time users there are like me, I've been with the platform since it was called Palm-Sized PC, and there weren't color screens or web browsers built in. My device had an optional dial up modem :)

I tried Android for 3 months as my primary device, I came back to Windows, and I'm giving WP7 a shot before I make any negitive statements, though I've mentioned many things I find cool.

There are some functions my HD2 does that WP7 won't out the gate. But WP7 does more than My Nino 320 ever dreamed of. (other than side-loading of apps or IRDA beaming), I miss the universal remote in my iPaq 2215, I also miss the slide out keyboard of my MDA, Wing, & Touch Pro2, but don't miss the sluggishness.

The G1 was probably not the best device to experience the platform with but it was the only one at the time. Every now and again I turn it on and update all the apps and marvel at the low-res screen and how bogged down it gets during app updates. It felt just as hacked together as WM and it was a "pure" android phone.

I have been a loyal winmo user since 2004, with the audiovox 6600, Samsung i730, Tilt, Fuze, Touch HD, Tilt 2. And now I have moved on to a Evo 4g. And I am so happy I made the move, not having to flash my rom once a week, even though I enjoyed it, just hated the freezes and lock ups that came with, until you get just right. Then a new rom comes out just when you get it right. And a poweruser like myself this EVO is a wonder. WP7 has to be marvelous or their market share is going to stay the same or even take a dip. With launches of more powerful Android Phones like the DroidX and droid phone from other manufactures like Samsung etc.. And the luanch of the New Iphone 4, WP7 has to break some serious ground. I have noticed they have really pushed for business users, but as far as the masses. I believe its a little bit too late Im afraid.

its never too late…android broke in the market when it was all about iphone and wp7 can do the same thing
