BOOOOO!!!! NO NEW HW ANNOUNCED! I'm tired of giving the excuses. First it was wait for CES, then it was wait for MWC, now it's wait for MIX? I'm tired of the Android platform getting better from Microsoft's "Partners". They have no problem updating HW every 3 -6 months there, but won't do it for WP7??? MS needs to kick them in the pants and get new fantastic HW. Something better come out of this Nokia deal, and I mean REAL, DROOLWORTHY HARDWARE. A N9 based WP7 would win me back, but for now I'm really disappointed that nothing HW wise was announced at MWC. This is getting very frustrating.

I'm glad we are seeing some sw improvements coming, but release the hounds already. Updates should be more frequently released.

    N9 Specs… Here…. http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_n9-3398.php
    512 MB RAM
64 GB ROM with MICROSD Card slot
    4" WVGA Screen (Preferably AMOLED)
    HDMI mini out
    FM Transceiver,
    Support for DLNA
1GHz Dual Core or greater support please

    • Brian

Other than some CDMA handsets I'm not sure now that we'll see any new hardware until Nokia gets their first WP7 handset out at the end of the year (assuming they can last till then, the WP7 announcement has cost them 20% of their value in just 2 days). Microsoft offering Nokia special deals and piles of cash has to have the other WP7 "partners" rethinking their interest.

      • zzz

Nokia had a decent run-up leading up to the news. Sell on the news happens very often.

        • Brian

20% drop in your stock price is not "sell on the news," it's a vote of "no confidence" from the financial markets. And they've not had any significant run up at all – the stocks been in the dumps since last may when it became apparent they were struggling.

          • zzz

Since Elop was hired, there's been a rumor of MS partnership and stock has slowly risen even though Nokia's stock had no business rising. It's now back to where it was before the hiring. The street knows this deal takes time to bear fruit. Short term holders don't care for it so they are selling. Doesn't necessarily mean people with long term outlook is disappointed by the news.

          • Brian

Elop released a special message to investors on Sunday specifically aimed to try and reassure them – the investment community (and that incudes long term investors) is seriously concerned about Nokia's future.

    • androidno

so what if android has better hw.. its still laggy

      • http://www.martinschmidler.com martinschmidler

yeah there are people who claim that WP7 is laggy as well. and some claim iOS is. Get a life, all of you.

        • http://www.facebook.com/J88NYR Jonny Rose

Its just the people who claim Android is laggy are correct. It was fast when it first came out, but that was back in the days when WM6.5 was out. But the smoothness hasnt improved enough and the competition are far far smoother running than Android.

          • http://www.martinschmidler.com martinschmidler

as far as I can tell from videos showing 2.2 and 2.3 it is fast enough to be used.
Let´s wait and see what 3.0 brings.

          • OmniaFan

yeah fast enough to be used is correct.
But after seeing for example the new sony ericson devices with android it's a ludicrous shitty experience. They got maybe better internals, but what counts int he end is the experience of the software .
For me fast enough to be used isn't close to that what I want

    • JoshDurhamn

Come one..HTC/LG/Motorola/Samsung with the exception of Dell, these are cheaply made. I want the REAL HW, and I do believe Nokia will be bringing that to us. Frankly, Android phones are starting to look alike, and it is so boring.

    • djguapo

When did they actually say "wait for MWC?"

I'd actually not even hold my breath for MIX; they'll probably announce it sporadically during the year, and it'll no doubt be leaked before then.

  • Microsoft

also there are some graphical changes, like the new office hub has onenote tiles in purple, and tiles for other documents in their own respective colors

  • OmniaFan

    Awesome Stuff!
It's a real shocker to me that multitasking is so far programmed already!

    WP7 FTW!

    • zzz

Yeah I was pleasantly surprised by the demo. That one was the biggest feature missing. Allows for a lot of new apps and shut up the critics.

  • Eddie

Except that audio is the only true multitasking port they mention. Everything else sounds like fast app switching, which is a welcome add-in, but doesn't allow me to keep something like an IM client running in the background while I surf the web. At least, that's he way I'm reading it…

    • zzz

IM clients don't need to be running, do they? Flory uses push (for tile and toast) notification very well. You don't have to keep it running to receive messages. It takes a few seconds to load up and read the message but with the fast switching, I guess you can keep it running in the background and wake up real fast when you need it.

      • zzz

Not saying IM clients won't be able to run in background. Just saying it shouldn't be a big issue if that were the case.

    • oslik

Sure, let's start to build the list of exceptions. Probably they demoed just an example, but we do not trust them and in fact, at the end of the day, music playing 3rd party application may be the only multitasking-enabled programs.

When they mentioned "the most operator-friendly OS", my impression was: "Haha, so no VoIP!"

      • oslik

        Clarification:

        a) operator friendly = no VoIP, no tethering
        b) operator friendly = paid VoIP, paid tethering

      http://www.wpcentral.com/multitasking-support-wp7

Hi all, Dieter Bohn here. Tim has broken it down pretty darn well above based on what Microsoft presented today. On top that that, we have a few more details on how multitasking will work on Windows Phone 7 – join us after the break!
So here's the deal: everybody is using the term "Multitasking" in different ways and so it's essentailly more of a marketing term for "get your apps launched quickly" than "apps run in real time in the background." Apple was derided a bit for not having "true multitasking" with their iOS update – instead they had background services – but now that it's out nobody really seems to mind.
I suspect that it's going to be a similar story once Microsoft unveils the full details on how multitasking on Windows Phone operates. In essence, when you leave an app what it does it very quickly pause and save its state in "deep hibernation." Then when you relaunch it, it is able to grab that information and relaunch very quickly. So you could accuse Microsoft of having "multitasking lite." However apps will be able ot perform certain services in the background – the example of Slacker being able to continue playing music even after you leave the app is a perfect example. This is very similar to what Apple did with iOS multitasking – apps freeze in the background but there is a discrete set of services that they can continue to use when they're not in front.
We also hear that certain apps will be able to periodically 'wake' themselves while in the background to grab small pieces of data. So in a well-written third party app you will still see new infomration when you re-open it. The perfect example is a Twitter app that could grab new tweets from time to time so that when you reopen it after it's been closed for a long time it won't feel so out of date.
So to sum up: Multitasking on Windows Phone 7 looks to be a combination of very fast pause, hibernate, and wake states combined with a set of multitasking services like iOS offers. If that doesn't sound like true multitasking to you, well, we bet that when you actually use it that won't matter – just ask an iOS user how often their version of multitasking gets in the way. iOS offers local notifications, push notifications, task completion (for finishing uploads), saved state, audio, voip, and location. For the vast majority of use cases, that covers most users.
We're sure that Microsoft will clear up exactly which multitasking services apps will be able to take advantage of while in their background hibernation state. So far we know that music can play and apps can periodically grab new information. Hopefully there will be more to come.

  • zzz

Good to see MS officially confirming the new features coming, especially the multitasking. Skydrive is a nice surprise. So that leaves voice navigation and what else? If they can deliever all that by this fall, I'd be pretty happy. But if they don't have an update between NoDo and Mango, I bet this site and Thurrott will be unbearable to read during spring and summer. HW wise, I hope some of the new ones for the holidays have front facing camera and NFC support.

  • http://www.martinschmidler.com martinschmidler

Missing big time: Updated hardware-requirements. Every new smartphone comes with dual-core this year.. what about WP7 OEMs? Will they be allowed to use dual-core Snapdragons at least?

    • zzz

HW requirement is for minimum specs, doesn't tell you high fast you can go.

    • GP007

Why update specs when the ones you have out are stated as being "the minimum"? Any OEM can go higher than what MS has stated as the base, there's no reason why WP7 shouldn't already have support for dual core ARM cpu's and so on. More storage and RAM isn't something that needs a OS update to get working either, so ya, MS doesn't have to force higher hardware specs, OEMs should just want to do it on their own.

      • http://www.martinschmidler.com martinschmidler

But we know Microsoft worked together with Qualcomm on Snapdragon support. Maybe MS does in fact NOT allow other CPUs at the moment, because they are still working on drivers for those..? I mean look at all the Android devices with dual-core. If you´re right, then why didn´t HTC, Samsung, LG etc. announce dual-core counterparts with WP7?? Looks like this will be a topic at MIX in april, which is a bit sad (not a real deal-breaker though, the slow update cycle is.)

        • dropqube

all those Android devices are NOT optimized for dual-core. Some previews have shown serious lagging on those devices. Dual-core needs the system to be optimized – and that is NOT the case!

          • http://www.martinschmidler.com martinschmidler

You´re right, but Android 3.0 supports Dual-Core CPUs and iOS 5 is likely to support them, too.

Microsoft even announced dual-core phones BEFORE WP7 came out; sometime back in 2009 Andy Lees mentioned it in an interview. Nobody of you remembers?!

    • http://www.facebook.com/J88NYR Jonny Rose

The only point of a minimum spec if at launch of the OS, everyone should stop asking why they are not updating the minimum specs, that just means it will piss off the rest of the WP7 users who suddenly dont meet minimum spec after a few months.

    • Alan Strangis

It's too early to come out with new minimums… The minimum specs should change no more frequently than once a year, with 1 year of backwards compatibility.

    • Wayne

MS and Nokia just joint their forces…. I believe NK will have something releasing further down the year…. Is still too early to talk about new hardwares because dual cores will be here to stay since it is already available on Android. Implementing dual cores for WP7 I doubt will be an issue, and how knows, MS will release update that will fully utilities the power of dual cores?

  • bullyboyb

What's with this dual core nonsense. As long as MS can tweak the software and make it fast enough I don't need dual core. My phone does not need 3d and all thoose fancy things. That's why I have a quad core laptop and 3d tv.
Just by an android and get off this site already if you prefer the android offerings. Let the windows platform develope. Its only about 4 months old. I dont want some slow battery munching 3d, dualcore half baked platform.

    • talksavvy

omg thank you!!!! i am so sick of android fans overstating how GREAT android is damn I have an EVO and yes its packed with features but damn I cant use them more than 5 hours without a charge. I charged that phone 3 times a day please stop pretending that android doesnt have issues. i will rather ms release a feature packed product that i can use without needing to root or attach a humpback whale looking battery to it!!!! by the way im loving my venue pro and thats what up lol

      • Alan Strangis

" but damn I cant use them more than 5 hours without a charge."

100% agreed… I hate how even the big review sites compare Android battery life to other Androids, as opposed to pointing how how absolutely horrible it is compared to every other mobile OS out there.

        • talksavvy

          im with you on that

    • Alan Strangis

I have to agree… Android with dual core still doesn't have the gaming experience that needs it.

    • Wayne

Agreed too. We need the OS to be polished as goo as possible, before talking about fully utilizing latest hardware…. I still seeing the new SGS 2 lags although it is running on a dual core.

  • djguapo

Wish they'd integrate Flickr in the Pictures hub.

  • Chris

Yes, more integration would be essential.. Flickr and other "photo sites" in the Pictures Hub; Twitter, LinkedIn and other "social sites" in the People Hub. Spotify and other music apps into the Zune Hub.

I think I now know why Spotify was not released parallell to WP7 being released, as one could implicate by the various articles saying so back in October.. They probably cannot run Spotify in the background until that update has been released. Bummer :(

  • raidenn

    Nice wallpaper or website pic…

  • tjarren

I honestly don't recall Microsoft EVER announcing WP7 devices. They provide the software and talk about the enhancements. It's up to the OEM's to announce the phones. Google does the exact same thing with Android.

    So what's the problem?

If anything, go give HTC, LG, Samsung and Dell a hard time and back off of MS.

  • Rusty_Shackelford

As a person waiting to ditch Android for a new WP7 device I was thoroughly disappointed by the lack of new WP7 phones at this event.

It's so annoying that manufacturers and carriers are putting all their eggs in the Android basket and neglecting WP7. I don't hate Android but I have reached a point with it that I find WP7 more desirable from the few times that I have tried it.

I'm not a fan of some of Nokia's business practices so I think I will just have to settle for a HD7, Mozart, or hope that Dell get off their butts and get some more Venue Pros out there.

  • PaddyParker

All in all some very exciting news for WP7 fans. WP7 is maturing exactly the way I hoped when I made the plunge to get a WP7 phone. I do wish the updates would arrive a little sooner. Anyhow, Microsoft will end 2011 having pulled technically level (and ahead on some fronts) with Android and iOS. Smart move Nokia.

  • PaddyParker

I still don't understand why Microsoft doesn't put this OS on a tablet. They must have something bigger in mind with Win 8 is all I can guess.

  • Sam

    What about Messenger!!!!

  • Ken

Where's the new hardware? The current stuff are just so run of the mill and boring. WP7 needs new hardware… doesn't have to be awesome but something that looks niceeeee and has a much better screen+resolution would be awesome!

  • Ken

Where is Samsung? Didn't they say that they were going to do morealmost double the number of WP7 phones this year than Android phones?
