Swype on Verizon Omnia 2 vs iPhone 3GS

Hidden in the spec sheet of the Verizon Samsung Omnia 2 was a small mention that the Omnia 2 will be coming with Swype text entry.

Swype is a graffiti-like way of entering whole words at a time by drawing lines connecting the letters of the word on a QWERTY keyboard. Because it enters whole words at a time it can be pretty fast, and in this video they compare text entry on the Samsung Omnia 2 versus the iPhone 3GS, and it of course beats the later device handedly.

Just one more thing for Verizon Samsung Omnia 2 owners to look forward to.

That's cool, but I still smoked them both with the hard keyboard on my Fuze. And I had to look up at the screen a few times to see what to type (and could without messing up). Someday this whole 'touch' fad will pass…

er.. I used to use Palm OS.. Swype is nothing like graffiti. Graffiti was a letter by letter input system.

Exactly. Its *like* grafitti, but not for letters, but for words. I imagine once you get to know the shape of a word you wont be thinking about the letters at all anymore, which should really speed things up.

also, this is assuming that the omnia with its resisitive screen would not miss any letters – we all know
how likely that is in real life scenarios, that a resistive screen might not miss a beat here and there
when you swipe over it. you get swiping hiccups even in the most basic scenarios like swiping through
lists etc – something thats hopefully going to go away how on the HD2, but not so on the samsung,
which so far has the omnia 1 as track record and that had the most unresponsive screen *ever*.

so, the video is, like always, a somewhat dishonest "in a perfect world it would work like this" scenario.
actually, one could expect this swipe thing (which is an awesome method of text entry nonetheless) to
work even better on capacitive displays such as the HD2 and, alas, the iphone.

Yeah, Omnia II's screen is not particularly sensitive.

My TP2's screen is pretty bad for swiping, but it's a heck of a lot better than the Omnia II's, which is quite miserable. I guess the OLED screen will look pretty while failing, though– lol.

Wow…that guy is very slow typing on his iphone. Maybe the guy on the swype phone is slower too, but I beat the Swype phone by 10 words on my iPhone.
