Full Flash 10.1 coming to Windows Mobile “before years end”

flash-smartphone-10-rm-eng

Adobe Systems Incorporated  today unveiled Adobe® Flash® Player 10.1 software for smartphones, smartbooks, netbooks, PCs and other Internet-connected devices, allowing content created using the Adobe Flash Platform to reach users wherever they are. A public developer beta of the browser-based runtime is expected to be available for Windows® Mobile and desktop operating systems including Windows, Macintosh and Linux later this year.

Flash Player 10.1 is the first consistent runtime release of the Open Screen Project that enables uncompromised Web browsing of expressive applications, content and high definition (HD) videos across devices. Using the productive Web programming model of the Flash Platform, the browser-based runtime enables millions of designers and developers to reuse code and assets and reduce the cost of creating, testing and deploying content across different operating systems and browsers. Flash Player 10.1 is easily updateable across all supported platforms to ensure rapid adoption of new innovations that move the Web forward.

The browser-based runtime leverages the power of the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) for accelerated video and graphics while conserving battery life and minimizing resource utilization. New mobile-ready features that take advantage of native device capabilities include support for multi-touch, gestures, mobile input models, accelerometer and screen orientation bringing unprecedented creative control and expressiveness to the mobile browsing experience. Flash Player 10.1 will also take advantage of media delivery with HTTP streaming, including integration of content protection powered by Adobe® Flash® Access 2.0. This effort, code-named Zeri, will be an open format based on industry standards and will provide content publishers, distributors and partners the tools they need to utilize HTTP infrastructures for high-quality media delivery in Flash Player 10.1 and Adobe® AIR® 2.0 software.

“With Flash Player moving to new mobile platforms, users will be able to experience virtually all Flash technology based Web content and applications wherever they are,” said David Wadhwani, general manager and vice president, Platform Business Unit at Adobe. “We are excited about the broad collaboration of close to 50 industry leaders in the Open Screen Project and the ongoing collaboration with 19 out of the top 20 handset manufacturers worldwide. It will be great to see first devices ship with full Flash Player in the first half of next year.”

“Adobe Flash technology provides a key experience on new Windows phones, enabling people to enjoy rich Flash based games, videos and other interactive Web content on the go,” said Stephanie Ferguson, general manager, Product Management, Microsoft Corp. “We look forward to bringing in the new capabilities of Adobe Flash Player 10.1 to the Windows phone browser when it becomes available.”

“Motorola is excited to be one of the first handset manufacturers to ship Android based devices with Flash Player support early next year,” said Christy Wyatt, vice president of software applications and ecosystem at Motorola. “As the No.1 platform for video on the Web, uncompromised browsing of Flash technology based content is essential for a rich mobile experience and something users expect from Motorola today.”

Adobe launches cross-platform web and mobile platform

adobe-logo Adobe Systems Incorporated has announced the availability of Adobe® Flash® Platform Services for Distribution, a new service that enables advertisers and content publishers to promote, measure and monetize applications across social networks, desktops and mobile devices.

Adobe Flash Platform Services are online, hosted services that allow developers to add innovative capabilities to Web applications with a predictable, cost efficient deployment model. Developers, advertisers and publishers are now using Adobe Flash Platform Services to make Web applications sharable, social, and collaborative.

Adobe is partnering with Gigya Inc., a leading social media authentication and distribution platform, to provide advertisers, publishers and game makers with a comprehensive distribution solution. The solution includes a unified management tool to effectively promote, measure and monetize Web applications and games.

The platform features easy sharing, between users and also operating systems, including mobile OS’s.  Users wishing to install a sharable application on a mobile device will receive a SMS message on that device with a link to the application. Users then click the link and the Distribution service detects the device and delivers the version of the application that is developed and optimized for that specific device.

An example of the service in action is the  Wall Street Journal Radio widget. The WSJ Radio Network provides audio business news reports and programs to more than 370 radio stations across the country and reaches more than 22 million listeners per week  and provide its network affiliates with new business news Web tools for use on their own sites as well as for individual use. The new widget, expected to be available in the near future, will offer content from WSJ Radio and WSJ.com, including podcasts, live audio business news updates from The Wall Street Journal Report and The Dow Jones Money Report, as well as updated headlines and video, and will be available for users to view and share via social networking sites and blogs.

Adobe will charge $1 per install of an application

Flash with Multi-touch coming to Windows Mobile, needs ARM11 or Cortex A

At an analyst event yesterday Adobe’s CTO Kevin Lynch told attendees the new version of flash for mobile devices, set to reach smartphones early next year, will have greater access to hardware features, making web content competitive with native apps.

Flash 10 will support multi-touch, accelerometer and GPS features, but will need either an ARM11 or Cortex A processor to run optimally.

While Lynch used only Android phones for his demo, Adobe has earlier stated that Windows Mobile phones, Nokia’s Symbian, and Palm’s Pre will also be supported by Flash 10.

Adobe continues to offer Flash Lite, a mobile version of the Flash Player that support .FLV video and .SWF vector graphics formats, and plug-in versions have been licensed by companies including Microsoft, for the Internet Explorer Mobile 6 browser included in Windows Mobile 6.5, and by Opera Software, for Opera Mobile 9.5.

Flash 10 coming to Windows Mobile in October 2009

flashIcon As we have become more and more used to browsing desktop-class websites with our smartphones, the more apparent the lack of flash video on our devices have become, hence the popularity of browsers like Skyfire.

Proxied web browsers concern many however, so the news delivered by Shantanu Naraye, CEO of Adobe, in their recently announced earnings call that their new mobile Flash Player 10 client is coming to Windows Mobile is very welcome.

“We are bringing Flash Player 10 to smartphone class devices to enable the latest web browsing experience. Multiple partners have already received early version of this release and we expect to release a beta version for developers at our Max conference in October. Google’s Android, Nokia’s Symbian OS, Windows Mobile and the new Palm Web OS will be the first devices to support web browsing with the new Flash player…”

The release will come during October at Adobe MAX 2009 and should bring access to flash based sites like Hulu or even simple things like previewing tracks on Amazon. The performance of Flash should also be much better, with the software being optimised for hardware acceleration on the newer generation of devices.

Flash Lite 3.1 based apps tutorial

flash

Adobe has recently announced a program to allow developers to distribute the Flash Lite 3.1 software as part of an application, allowing Flash-based applications to be self-contained, without any requirement for the run-time to be already installed on the device, making the applications therefore no different from any native application.

Flashbot.net has published a tutorial on how to get .SWF Flash files to run on your Windows Mobile phone.

The writer reports the process is pretty simple, taking less than 30 minutes to get the application up and running.  The only reservation is that Fash Lite 3.1 only support Action Script 2.0, meaning modern Flash games will probably not run properly.

Flash 10 coming to Windows Mobile!

The recent release of the emulator of Internet Explorer 6 Mobile brought quite a few disappointments, not the least of which was the revelation that the Flash integration in fact relied on Flash Lite 3.1, which, being based on Flash 8, proved rather incapable when it comes to accessing most Flash functions on the internet, which usually demanded at least Flash 9.

Now, according to MobileCrunch, Adobe is planning to demonstrate Flash Player 10 running on Windows Mobile at its Adobe Max developer conference today.

Product manager Michele Turner told MobileCrunch:

We will be showing the first delivery of Flash on mobile phones, on other platforms. You will see it on Windows Mobile.

Adobe will also be announcing a closer collaboration with ARM to optimize the software to work better on ARM-powered devices, which may relieve our concerns regarding the usability of the software on our devices.

Adobe eager to get Flash on Windows Mobile

JKontherun reports from the recent Mobilize panel that Adobe wants Flash on Windows Mobile “for sure“.

Gary Kovacs, the VP and General Manager of Adobe is said to have said “He knows how important it is these days for Flash support in the browser and says that we will see Flash in an upcoming Windows Mobile browser for sure.

We have seen several romours of a more modern version of Flash coming to Windows Mobile, and have even seen a leaked version of Flash 3.1, but an official supported version coming soon would be very welcome, considering the number of video sources like Hulu on the internet which rely on the software.

Abobe is set to launch its Photoshop Mobile at the end of this month, which relies on Flash Lite, so I expect we wont have to wait for very much longer.

Flashlite 3 coming to Windows Mobile end of September?

The wires have been abuzz about the news that Adobe is bringing a mobile Photoshop client to Windows Mobile by the end of September. Its also known that the client will be based on Flash. What I have not seen anyone do so far is connect the dots.

FlashLite 3 has been ‘available’ for Windows Mobile for some time, but so far no Windows Mobile OEM has seen it worth the trouble to license it for their handsets. Adobe however has run into trouble trying to get their technology on the run away popular platform, the iPhone. The only logical conclusion, if Adobe were to maintain their smartphone presence, especially in USA where Nokia is nearly non-existent, would be therefore to release a free client for Windows Mobile. The need for this is particularly urgent, seeing how Microsoft is planning to release Silverlight for Windows Mobile towards the end of the year or early next year. If Adobe does not get a Windows Mobile foothold soon they may miss the window of opportunity completely, and effectively have no mobile presence in USA at all.

The news therefore that they are releasing their Mobile Photoshop client, which will allow light editing and automatic uploading to their Photoshop.com service, can only indicate a wide release of the technology to Windows Mobile handsets. The presence of a diverse series of OEM’s (Samsung, Motorola and Palm) suggests against an exclusive deal, and Adobe would never build their flagship mobile client on outdated technology like Flashlite 2.1 or Flash 7 for Windows Mobile.

We should therefore look forward to a more full web experience very soon indeed, allowing us to use the “Real Web” as never before.
