Black Nokia Lumia 800 sold out on Optus Australia

WPDownunder reports that the black Nokia Lumia 800 is now out of stock on Optus Australia, 2 weeks after the launch of the handset.

WPDownUnder attributes good sales to a special launch price of only $49 plan over 24 months. The Cyan version is still in stock, but no restocking date in sight yet for the black version.

WPDownUnder calls it an exceptional strong start for Nokia in Australia and Optus.  Hopefully this is indeed the case, and we see a sharp uptick in Windows Phone market share, as we have seen in other locales after a Lumia launch.

HTC Titan II to hit Australia in early April

WPDownunder is reporting that the marketing campaign for the LTE-powered HTC Titan II is starting on the 27th March on the Australian Telstra carrier, with the handset expected to hit the market early in April.

The smartphone is rumoured to be free on a $79 /mo Freedom Connect plan or the cheaper $59 plan, with a $5 /mo MRO free, but pricing has not been confirmed yet.

If it does arrive in the next few weeks it is possible the device will beat the LTE Nokia Lumia 900 to market, at least in Australia and possibly in USA also.

The HTC Titan II features a 4.7 inch screen, 1.5 Ghz processor, 16 GB storage and a 16 megapixel camera, and of course LTE, backed by a 1730mAh battery.

Nokia Lumia 800 showing up in Australian stores, will get Internet Sharing update “soon”

The Nokia Lumia 800 will become available very soon in Australia, with the handset expected to become available on the 29th February.

WPDownUnder has managed to catch a demo device in the wild already today at the Frankston TeleChoice store where it was playing the above loop, which will hopefully be more enticing than the static Start screen.

Of more interest to everyone not in Australia Nokia Australia has said:

Tethering is soon to be included in one of the upcoming software updates.

suggesting another software update is on the way to Nokia’s current flagship smartphone.

Telstra only now pushing out the 7740/8107 update?

327_1lgWe have been getting sporadic reports recently of the 7740 update coming to handsets in Australia, which frankly we did not think much of it, expecting that nearly everyone (except maybe AT&T) have received their post-Mango updates.

According to anausiewithawindowsphone.com however Telstra has in fact just now joined the party, pushing out both the 7740 and 8107 updates to their Windows Phone users.

That would make them the last carrier in Australia to push out the update, which is of course small consolation to AT&T users still waiting for the software.

Are you in Australia and have you just received the update? Let us know below.

Nokia Lumia 710 and 800 priced and dated for Australia

Nokia has announced the pricing and availability of its Lumia 710 and 800 Windows Phone 7 handsets in Australia.

Nokia managing director for Australia and New Zealand Chris Carr said the Lumia 710 would sell in Australia from March for $379 outright, alongside the Lumia 800 which will retail unlocked for $699.

The Lumia 800 will be available through all 3 major Australia carriers (Telstra, Optus and Vodafone) while the 710 will sell through Optus and Virgin Mobile, as well as retail outlets.

The handsets will come with Nokia Music, with  a library of 15 million tracks, Nokia Mix Radio, a streaming music service, Nokia Drive – a turn-by-turn navigation system, and Nokia maps are among app offerings.

The Australian models of the Lumia 800 will come in four colours: black, blue (cyan), pink (magenta) and white. The Lumia 710 handset will be available in black and white variants, but consumers can choose from black, white, cyan, pink and yellow backplates to mix and match the look of the handset.

Handsets are expected to be available at the beginning of March, with each carrier making their own specific announcements.

Nokia Lumia 710 and 800 priced in New Zealand and Australia

The Nokia Lumia 800 is due to his Australia in March, and Nokia Australia has just confirmed the unlocked price of the handset will be AUD$699.

Similarly Telecom in New Zealand have released the price but not the launch date of the Nokia Lumia 710 and 800.  The Lumia 710 will be sold  for $549 and the Lumia 800 for $899. Deals for customers buying the devices on contracts won’t be announced until closer to the launch, although a Telecom representative says buyers can take some guidance from the discounts offered on similar devices.

Nokia New Zealand managing director Chris Carr says the Lumia will change the way people think about Nokia.

"It signifies a new beginning for the company, bringing together the very best of Nokia’s handset design and services with the latest Windows Phone software.”

Telstra puts up a page to allow users to register interest in the Nokia Lumia 800

lumia-eoi-400x300

If you are Australian and have been waiting breathlessly for the Nokia Lumia 800 to arrive there, you can now register with Telstra to be informed as soon as official news of its release becomes available.

Telstra has said on their facebook page that they will be one of the first countries to get the 850 Mhz band Lumia 800 handsets, but had nothing to say “yet” about the Nokia Lumia 900, hopefully meaning that a future release is not ruled out.

See the page at Telstra here.

Samsung Omnia W launches in Australia on Telstra–first second generation handset down under

omnia-w-sliderMany of our Australian readers have been complaining about the absence of second generation handsets down under.

It seems that situation is finally changing, with WPDownUnder reporting that the Samsung Omnia W is launching on Telstra today.

While I could not find the handset myself on Telstra’s website, Sheeds reports the device will retail for free on the FreedomConnect $59 per month 24 month contract, and also had the handset early for a thorough review, which can be found here.

He concludes:

So what’s the wash-up? The more I used this handset over my week of testing, the more I came to like it! From initially feeling too small and light in my hands – by the time of writing this review the Omnia W actually managed to make my Focus feel a little “awkward” in the hand! Whilst sitting firmly in the mid-range of feature sets (screen size, storage, premium design elements, LTE etc.) – this handset excels at nearly every task thrown at it.

Windows Phone “Mango” absolutely shines on the device – and I see this handset having no issues in “smoking” any other modern smartphone for both task activities (messaging/social media etc.) and speed and responsiveness of the OS. Storage aside, there is not really any other significant weak spot in this device. Make sure you get into a Telstra store and have a feel of the unit, demo it – as it is surprisingly good device, and more than a competent replacement for the HTC Mozart in the Telstra line-up.

HTC Radiant LTE Windows Phone pictured

radiant

Pocketnow have just posted this picture which purports to be HTC’s first LTE Windows Phone 7 handset.

The device still has a massive 4.7 inch screen, but appears subtly thicker, likely to accommodate a larger battery to power the LTE radio.

According to earlier leaks the handset is not expected to reach AT&T stores at the same time as the Nokia Lumia 900, which is rumoured for an 18th March appearance, but will show up on AT&T some time afterward.

Pocketnow notes that according to their tipster this device will not be confined to USA, but should also hit antipodean stores on Telstra Australia.
