Windows Mobile SMS Sync freeware updated to version 1.2

Biran Hamma’s Windows Mobile SMS Sync is freeware which allows a user to backup SMS messages to their desktop. It includes a desktop application for viewing and searching messages and a Wizard for uploading messages to a SQL server database.

It has been updated to version 1.2, which should help cure problems international users may have been having with the software, and also includes some new features.

The application works on XP and Vista and with both Windows Mobile 5 and 6. On the handheld it requires .Net CF 2.0 (which is built-in to all Windows Mobile 6.1 handhelds) or even the newer .Net CF 3.5

Windows Mobile 7 to have online backup?

Microsoft has announced its intention to buy MobiComp, to provide cloud-based online backup for Windows Mobile devices. This move, when seen in conjunction with Microsoft’s purchase of Danger, represent further evidence of Micosoft’s push into the consumer market.

At present MobiComp provides services such as MobiKeeper to 11 carriers, which allow mobile operators and people round the world back up personal content stored on a phone. They also do software such as MobileKeeper Sharing & Communities, and Active mTicker that publish updates to online communities, and get entertainment and news content delivered to phones.

“People expect their phones to deliver the best experiences from PCs and the web right to their pockets,” said Todd Peters, corporate vice president in the Mobile Communications Business at Microsoft. “Investing in the right solutions from companies like MobiComp will extend the capabilities of Windows Mobile and Windows Live to help us provide the most innovative and seamless way to stay connected.”

The acquisition would bring MobiComp’s expertise building innovative mobile data protection and sharing services to Microsoft’s Windows Mobile operating system, which is expected to deliver its 7th revision in early 2009. Terms of the planned acquisition are not being disclosed.
