Compal buoyed by Nokia Lumia orders
We do not know how many Lumia handsets Nokia sold so far, but according to Digitimes initial shipments were pretty small, with Compal, the Lumia ODM, shipped less than 200,000 handsets (including whatever else they were doing) in October.
This ramped up in November to 600,000 units on the strength of Nokia’s orders, but again including whatever other handsets Compal is producing.
If the claim is true it does once again indicate, despite the size of the marketing campaign, that Nokia never planned to sell millions of Lumia handsets this year, something Stephen Elop always maintained, having said from the start that volume shipments will start in 2012.
Compal expects to benefit from the early 2012 push however, with Nokia expanding shipments to more than 30 countries, and expects to ship twice as many handsets in Q1 2012 as Q4 2011.
While these numbers are still small compared to the 19 million Symbian handsets Nokia shipped in Q3 2011 they are very significant in terms of the scale of current Windows Phone 7 shipments, and will hopefully expand the market massively in 2012.
Nokia putting in Windows phone orders from Foxconn also
Last we heard Nokia would be using Compal as an ODM for the Nokia Searay.
Now Digitimes reports that Nokia has begun releasing its orders for Windows Phone 7.5-based smartphones to both Foxconn International Holdings and Compal Communications.
This is pretty good news for prospective Nokia customers, as Foxconn, who famously also ODMs the iPhone, has a reputation for high quality, unlike Compal who frankly does not.
While there is no way of knowing, given that the Searay was connected with Compal, it may be that the Nokia Sabre or Nokia Ace will be made by Foxcon instead, and represent a somewhat better device, irrespective of specs.

Report: Compal to start shipping Nokia’s first WP7 smartphones, 2 million in total

According to Dan Nystedt, ex IDG news, Compal is to start shipments of their first batch of Windows Phone 7 smartphones for Nokia, expected to include the Nokia Sea Ray.
The shipments would be in time for the announcement and simultaneous release of the handset at Nokia World in London on October 26th, and will apparently total 2 million handsets in Q4 2011.
If Nokia does manage to sell all of those handsets it would mean a substantial bump in the number of Windows Phone 7 handsets sold in 2011, currently likely sitting around 5 million.
Nokia has said in 2012 volume shipments will start which will flood the market with a variety of handsets at a variety of price points.

Compal joins the Windows Phone 7 party, will also ODM for Nokia

Digitimes reports that Compal has joined Nokia, HTC, Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Acer, Fujitsu and ZTE in licensing Windows Phone 7.
The company, which is aiming to be Taiwan’s biggest phone ODM in Q4 2011, is moving all of its production to smartphones, and has also won ODM contracts from Nokia for its Windows Phones, and are looking to do the same for Acer also.
Compal’s chairman Ray Chen has said the company is aiming to build up a foundation based on the WP7 platform that will enable it to shorten time to market for customized smartphones while expanding the pool of Windows Phone-based clients, and are also aiming to ship a total of 4.5 million handsets in 2011.

Toshiba to produce a dual screen Windows CE tablet
Digitimes, with their close industry contacts, has one again leaked some tasty info.
On this occasion they claim, pretty confidently, that Compal will be producing two tablet PC’s for Toshiba, one a standard Android one and the other powered by Windows CE 7.
Toshiba has announced last week that they will be producing the same tablets, but at the time they were labelled as simply an Android and Windows one, making it appear that the Microsoft version actually ran Windows 7 on an Intel chip, like the HP Slate.
According to Digitimes however the tablets will run on Nvidia’s Tegra 2 processor, and the Windows CE 7 version will feature dual screens.
Apparently Compal Electronics will ship the tablets at the end of 2010 or early 2011, a time scale which slots in pretty well with that recent New York Times Microsoft Courier leak.
Toshiba has traditionally had a close relationship with Microsoft, being one of the first to make a Plays for Sure PMP and then being the first OEM of the Zune device before Microsoft took manufacturing internal.
Could this rumour be all about the Courier? Let us know your thoughts below.
LG to outsource new Windows Mobile devices to Compal
At Mobile World Congress LG promised to release 50 new Windows Mobile devices over the next 3 years. To help LG realize this goal they have enlisted the help of Compal, ODM to the likes of HP, Motorola, Palm and Acer, who have increased their focus on smartphones.
While its good news that LG is ramping up its Windows Mobile work, my opinion of Compal’s ODM work versus HTC for example, is not very high, with devices often having poor build quality and unattractive designs.
Hopefully LG, who makes the PRADA phone, amongst others, will be able to keep a close eye on Compal and still produce compelling devices.

Palm orders 5 million Windows Mobile phones for 2009
China Economic News Service reports that Palm has ordered 5 million Windows Mobile smartphones from Compal. The devices will not only be manufactured by Compal, but also designed by them. This indicated a resumption of Palm outsourcing both design and engineering of their smartphones, presumably to let them concentrate better on their PalmOS II project.
The news however also indicates strong confidence by Palm in the future of their Windows Mobile offerings. Palm’s usual total smartphone shipments, including their palmOS products , have only been around 3.2 million for the Financial Year ending June 2008, and of course this period has been dominated by their very successful POS Centro product.
Compal will also be manufacturing Windows Mobile devices for Motorola, who under economic pressure, has also resumed outsourcing their production.
